My Sad Dead is less an ensemble of strangers than one complicated family surrounded by a neighborhood that keeps intruding on its grief. Pablo Larrain and Mariana Enriquez merge characters from several of Enriquez’s stories into the same bloodline, placing Ema at the center as a recently retired doctor whose ability to see the dead…
My Sad Dead begins with a private burden and ends by turning it into a neighborhood-wide experience. Ema has spent most of her life seeing and hearing people who have passed, treating the ability less like a supernatural calling than an exhausting condition she has learned to manage. Her niece Julie shares that connection in…
The Final Problem gives Benjamin Basil the sort of career comeback he never expected. Jose Coronado’s aging Spanish actor is best remembered for playing Sherlock Holmes, but a chance trip to Mallorca places him inside a real mystery when a storm strands thirteen people at the isolated Hotel Auslander on Santa Agueda. What begins with…
The Final Problem arrives on Netflix as the kind of mystery that could easily support another case. Jose Coronado’s Benjamin Basil is a retired actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes who discovers, rather inconveniently, that years spent pretending to be a detective have left him surprisingly capable of doing the real thing. Martino Rivas’ Francisco…
Netflix’s Delusion spends six episodes making Wan question almost everything she believes about her family. Paramount+’s “Team Moms: Baseball” begins with youth baseball at the center of nearly every family’s life, but by the end of its first season, the biggest competition is no longer taking place on the field. The parents of the boys at Scottsdale’s Legendary Prep Academy spend the season moving through friendships, arguments and shifting alliances,…
Pumpkin Regatta Romance is built around two families rather than simply two romantic leads. Nadine Brooks and Ethan King have enough shared history to understand that their fathers’ long-running disagreement is affecting the entire community, while reviving the town’s Pumpkin Regatta gives them a reason to work together. Mishael Morgan and Corey Sevier lead the…
Netflix’s Unabomber tells Ted Kaczynski’s story through two timelines that steadily move toward the same conclusion. In 1958, 16-year-old Ted arrives at Harvard as a gifted mathematics student who is intellectually advanced but socially uncomfortable, while decades later FBI agent Joanne Miller begins questioning the assumptions behind a long-running federal investigation. Director Janus Metz cuts…
Pumpkin Regatta Romance takes one of Hallmark’s more unusual fall traditions and builds an entire small-town romance around it. Mishael Morgan stars as Nadine Brooks, whose family operates the local marina, while Corey Sevier plays pumpkin farmer Ethan King. Their fathers have allowed an old disagreement to derail the community’s signature Pumpkin Regatta, leaving Nadine…
Netflix’s Unabomber reaches its decisive investigative turn not through Shailene Woodley’s fictional FBI agent Joanne Miller alone, but through the family connection that finally gives investigators a name worth pursuing. Matthew Kevin Anderson plays David Kaczynski, Ted Kaczynski‘s younger brother, while Tanya van Blokland portrays David’s wife, Linda Patrik. Their realization that Ted’s language resembled…
