The Final Problem arrives on Netflix as the kind of mystery that could easily support another case. Jose Coronado’s Benjamin Basil is a retired actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes who discovers, rather inconveniently, that years spent pretending to be a detective have left him surprisingly capable of doing the real thing. Martino Rivas’ Francisco Foxa gradually becomes his literary-minded companion, giving the four-episode Spanish series a partnership that feels deliberately indebted to Holmes and Watson. That naturally makes another mystery tempting after the Santa Agueda case is resolved. For now, however, Netflix is treating The Final Problem as a complete limited series rather than the beginning of an announced multi-season drama.

Has The Final Problem Season 2 Been Renewed?
As of September 26, 2026, Netflix has not announced The Final Problem Season 2. The company’s official page labels the show a “Limited Series,” and Netflix used the same language before its September 25 premiere. The production was introduced as a four-episode miniseries adapting Arturo Perez-Reverte’s bestselling novel El problema final.
That wording matters more than the familiar “Season 1” labels that can sometimes appear on third-party entertainment databases. Netflix currently presents all four episodes together as one self-contained run, and its description of Episode 4 explicitly says that the final episode “resolves the final problem.” Nothing in Netflix’s current promotional material refers to another season being in development.
So viewers should not interpret the ending as a conventional cliffhanger. Basil solves the central mystery surrounding the hotel and understands the truth behind the identities and relationships that have confused him throughout the case. There are emotional consequences left for him to process, but the central investigation reaches an answer.
The Series Was Designed as a Miniseries
The Final Problem was being called a miniseries long before audiences saw the ending. When Netflix announced production in May 2025, it described the project as a four-episode mystery miniseries. The same description appeared again when the company revealed its September 2026 release date and later when the official trailer arrived.
That suggests the limited-series designation is not simply cautious marketing while Netflix waits for viewing figures. The adaptation appears to have been developed specifically around one complete novel and one central case.
The novel itself has the structure of a classical puzzle mystery. A storm isolates a small group of people, Basil becomes an accidental investigator, and the story gradually supplies enough clues for its central problem to be resolved. Director Felix Viscarret’s adaptation preserves that basic shape instead of inserting an obvious new case into the finale simply to create another season.
Could Benjamin Basil Return for Another Mystery?
This is where the possibility becomes more interesting. The Santa Agueda mystery may be complete, but Benjamin Basil himself is not a character who can only function inside that one story. Perez-Reverte’s official website described Basil and Foxa as a new Holmes-and-Watson-style partnership when the novel was released in 2023.
That comparison is significant because Basil’s accidental detective career is arguably one of the most reusable ideas in the story. He has spent years playing Sherlock Holmes and suddenly discovers that the methods he learned for the screen can be applied to an actual mystery. Foxa, meanwhile, is a writer who enjoys the intellectual game surrounding Basil’s deductions. Their partnership could easily support another investigation even without returning to the Hotel Auslander.
The Netflix series also leaves Basil personally changed by what happened on the island. Solving the case forces him to confront uncomfortable parts of his own past rather than simply proving that he is clever. That gives a hypothetical continuation somewhere to take the character beyond repeating the same trick.
Still, that is narrative possibility, not a Season 2 announcement. Netflix has not said that Basil and Foxa are being developed as recurring detectives.
Is There a Second Benjamin Basil Book?
There is currently no announced second Benjamin Basil novel that Netflix could simply adapt as Season 2. Perez-Reverte’s official material around El problema final presents the 2023 novel as its own mystery and celebrates Basil and Foxa as a newly created Holmes-and-Watson-like pairing, but it does not announce another adventure for them.
That distinguishes The Final Problem from book adaptations where multiple published installments already provide an obvious roadmap for future seasons. If Netflix wanted to continue Basil immediately, the filmmakers would currently need either a new original story or future source material from Perez-Reverte.
That does not make another chapter impossible. Perez-Reverte clearly designed Basil and Foxa as characters who fit comfortably into the tradition of recurring literary detectives. But until either the author or Netflix announces another project, there is no source sequel that can be confidently described as the basis for Season 2.
Does the Ending Set Up Season 2?
Not directly. The finale completes the mystery rather than revealing another case waiting for Basil. Netflix’s own episode description emphasizes that the filming of Basil’s new movie finally exposes the truth and resolves the central puzzle.
What the ending does preserve is Basil’s potential as a detective. He begins the story as an actor living partly in the shadow of the fictional investigator he once played. By the end, he has proven that his observational skills are not merely performance tricks. Foxa also gives him the sort of companion who could naturally follow him into another puzzle.
That makes a continuation easier to imagine than it would be for a limited series whose protagonist’s story is completely closed. A possible second season could simply introduce a new case rather than undoing anything about Santa Agueda. But viewers should separate that storytelling possibility from evidence that Netflix actually intends to make it.
What Would Need to Happen for Season 2?
The first major factor will likely be how The Final Problem performs after its September 25 release. Netflix has not publicly provided a renewal threshold for the series, and it would be speculative to claim that a particular number of views would guarantee another installment.
The creative question may be just as important. Because the adaptation has exhausted the central story of El problema final, continuing it would require a reason to turn Basil into a recurring screen detective. That could come from an original screenplay, collaboration with Perez-Reverte, or eventually another novel if the author chooses to revisit the character.
For now, the cleanest answer is that The Final Problem Season 2 is not confirmed and the show was produced as a self-contained limited series. The good news for anyone hoping for more is that Basil and Foxa are unusually easy characters to carry into another mystery. Netflix does not need to reopen the first case to continue their story. It simply needs another final problem for Basil to solve.
