Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 introduces Grace without giving her the kind of grand entrance normally reserved for an important new character. She appears at Castle Leoch as a young woman working for Jocasta Cameron, but Episode 2, “The Veil of Time,” quickly gives her two unusually warm scenes with Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser. Coming immediately after Murtagh finally accepted that Ellen and Brian belong together, the timing makes Grace’s arrival difficult to dismiss as coincidence.
The episode does not officially declare Grace to be Murtagh’s new romantic interest. However, everything from their playful conversation to Murtagh finding a reason to potentially see her again suggests Blood of My Blood has plans for the pair.
Who Is Grace in Blood of My Blood?
Grace is a servant in Jocasta Cameron’s household. When Murtagh first speaks with her at Castle Leoch, she introduces herself simply as “Grace, in service to Mistress Cameron” and explains that she has only been with the Camerons for around six months.
Grace did not grow up in the Highlands. She previously lived in London and admits that Scotland still feels almost like another country to her. More significantly, Grace tells Murtagh that her father’s debts left her with little control over the direction of her own life. Entering service appears to have been a necessity rather than something she freely chose.
That detail immediately gives Grace and Murtagh common ground. Murtagh is preparing to leave with the Jacobite forces and admits that he does not have much say in what comes next for him either. The conversation turns what initially looks like a casual introduction into a meeting between two people whose lives are being directed by obligations beyond their control.
How Do Grace and Murtagh Meet?
Grace first properly meets Murtagh after the tense confrontation surrounding Brian’s return to Castle Leoch. Mrs. Fitzgibbons is tending to Murtagh and asks Grace to keep an eye on him while she steps away.
Murtagh almost immediately seems interested in the unfamiliar face. He asks whether they have met before, and Grace explains that she has not been at the castle long. Their exchange becomes noticeably playful when Grace asks whether he is always so quick to get involved on someone else’s behalf. Murtagh answers that he does so when the cause is just or the friend is worth the trouble.
The scene is brief, but the tone matters. The episode shifts into softer music while Grace tends to him, and both characters become considerably less guarded than they are with most of the people around them.
Grace eventually leaves after wishing that Murtagh recovers well. The story could easily have ended their interaction there, but Episode 2 deliberately brings them together again.
Is Grace Murtagh’s New Love Interest?
Grace appears increasingly likely to become a romantic interest for Murtagh, although Episode 2 stops short of confirming a relationship.
She later returns with food that Mrs. Fitz has prepared for Murtagh. This second conversation becomes much more personal. Murtagh asks how long Grace has served the Camerons, while Grace tells him about London and her father’s debts. She then asks about the rumors of the rebellion after learning that Murtagh is leaving the following morning.
Their farewell contains the strongest suggestion that the writers intend them to meet again. Murtagh tells Grace that if he passes back through Castle Leoch, he will return the basket. Grace responds that he had better do exactly that.
On the surface, they are discussing a household item. Dramatically, the basket gives Murtagh an excuse to come looking for Grace again.
The episode ends their interaction with Grace wishing him safe keeping and Murtagh returning the sentiment. Nothing has happened between them yet, but Blood of My Blood is clearly allowing the possibility to develop.
Grace Arrives After Murtagh Finally Lets Ellen Go
The timing of Grace’s introduction is especially important because of what happened between Murtagh and Ellen at the end of Season 1.
Murtagh spent much of the first season carrying feelings for Ellen even after realizing that she loved Brian. In the finale, he finally gave Ellen the famous boar-tusk bracelets and told her that he would find happiness in hers and Brian’s rather than asking her to return his feelings. Those bracelets are an important connection to the original Outlander, where Murtagh eventually reveals that he created them for Ellen after killing a boar during a MacKenzie hunt.
Grace consequently enters Murtagh’s story at the first point when he is emotionally capable of looking somewhere other than Ellen.
That does not necessarily mean Grace will become the great love of his life. It does suggest that the writers are giving Murtagh a chance to discover who he is when Ellen is no longer the center of his romantic hopes.
What Does Grace Mean for Murtagh and Jocasta?
Grace’s arrival creates another interesting complication because Outlander viewers already know Murtagh has history with Jocasta.
Blood of My Blood Season 1 established Jocasta’s attraction to young Murtagh. Rory Alexander also discussed those early hints before the series premiered, while the original Outlander television continuity eventually develops an adult romance between Murtagh and Jocasta much later in their lives.
Grace therefore does not automatically replace Jocasta in Murtagh’s larger story.
Instead, she could become an entirely new chapter that the original series never had reason to mention. The prequel has decades of Murtagh’s unexplored life available to it, and nothing in established television continuity requires him to spend all those years waiting for Jocasta.
There is also an interesting irony in Grace serving Jocasta herself. If Grace and Murtagh grow closer, Jocasta may be forced to watch another woman receive the attention she once wanted from him.
Is Grace a Character From the Original Outlander?
Grace appears to be a new character created for Blood of My Blood rather than a previously established figure from the original Outlander television story.
That gives the writers considerably more freedom with her future. Viewers know important parts of Murtagh’s eventual life, including his devotion to Jamie and, in the television adaptation, his later connection with Jocasta. Grace’s fate, by contrast, is not predetermined by a familiar piece of Outlander history.
For now, Episode 2 only establishes that Grace is a London woman brought into the Cameron household by difficult family circumstances and that she and Murtagh immediately notice one another.
But Murtagh’s promise to return the basket feels deliberately unfinished. With him leaving Castle Leoch for the Jacobite campaign, Blood of My Blood has already created the simplest possible reason for him to come back: Grace is waiting on the other side of that promise.
