Anna Merrick’s suicide looked almost impossible to understand when Reacher Season 4 began, because she appeared to be moving toward a specific destination before suddenly turning her gun on herself. Episode 4 finally provides a coherent explanation, although it does so through Reacher’s reconstruction rather than a flashback proving every detail. Reacher believes Anna discovered that her kidnapped son Ben had already been killed, hid the flash drive instead of surrendering it, and boarded the subway intending to take revenge on his killers. When Reacher approached and identified himself as a former cop, Anna realized he would stop her, leaving her overwhelmed by grief and what she saw as another failure to help Ben.

Spoiler Alert

Ben’s kidnapping explains why Anna was racing to Philadelphia

Anna’s strange travel decisions begin to make sense once Reacher connects them to Ben. She apparently started toward Philadelphia with the flash drive but became trapped in traffic, creating a problem if the people holding her son had given her a strict deadline. Rather than remain on the highway, she took an exit and headed to the nearest subway station. Her urgency was therefore probably not caused by fear that government officials would discover the missing files, but by the immediate threat against her son.

The group believes Ben had been kidnapped specifically because his mother possessed the records everyone wanted. Anna had secretly copied documents at the secure facility where she worked, deleted the electronic version and allowed the paper originals to be sent for destruction. Her flash drive may consequently contain the last surviving copy of information connected to Sampson’s old Indonesian mission. Threatening Ben gave whoever wanted that information a direct way to control Anna.

Why did Anna board the subway without the flash drive?

The missing drive is the detail that changes Reacher’s entire interpretation of Anna’s final journey. If Anna were still going to exchange the information for Ben, she could not possibly complete that bargain without bringing the drive. Reacher and the others therefore conclude that something changed before she reached the train. The most likely answer is that Anna had already realized Ben was dead, meaning there was no longer any reason to give his killers what they wanted.

Reacher imagines that Anna had been receiving regular proof that Ben remained alive while she followed their demands. When she became delayed in traffic, she may have insisted on another call or video before continuing toward the exchange. Her captors then either refused or were unable to produce Ben, allowing Anna to understand what had happened. Episode 4 never shows these communications, so the method is speculative, but the conclusion that Anna believed Ben was dead is central to the team’s reconstruction.

Anna was probably heading toward Ben’s killers for revenge

Once saving Ben was impossible, Anna’s goal appears to have changed from negotiation to retaliation. Reacher remembers seeing her carrying a gun and wearing a dark coat over lighter clothing, details that now look different from the way they did during the premiere. He believes Anna took the coat because she hoped to approach the people responsible without being easily seen. The gun that may originally have been intended to protect herself and Ben after an exchange would instead become the weapon she planned to use against his killers.

Nobody in Reacher’s group pretends that Anna had a realistic chance against professional mercenaries. She was a government employee rather than someone trained to attack an armed tactical unit, and the people surrounding the flash-drive conspiracy had already demonstrated how dangerous they were. Reacher’s point is that Anna no longer cared about those odds after losing her son. Her trip into Philadelphia becomes understandable as an act of grief-driven vengeance rather than a rational plan she expected to survive.

Did Reacher cause Anna Merrick’s suicide?

Reacher did not cause the circumstances that drove Anna to that point, but Episode 4 makes clear that he believes his intervention may have triggered her final decision. When he approached Anna on the subway, he told her that he had been a police officer because he wanted her to believe someone competent was present and could bring the situation under control. Reacher now realizes that Anna may have heard something completely different. An armed woman planning to kill several people would know that a former law-enforcement officer could not simply allow her to continue.

From Anna’s perspective, Reacher’s appearance meant her revenge plan was ending before it began. Reacher believes she already blamed herself for failing to protect Ben while he was alive, and now she may have felt she was failing him again by being prevented from confronting his killers. He tells the others that he had wanted to help Anna but acknowledges that his attempt at de-escalation did not achieve that result. The scene gives Reacher a rare form of guilt because he acted reasonably with the information available and still cannot escape wondering whether different words might have kept Anna alive.

What happened to Anna’s flash drive?

Reacher’s reconstruction also produces his best theory about the missing drive. He remembers the mail inside Anna’s abandoned car and focuses on an opened credit-card solicitation whose prepaid return envelope was missing. His conclusion is that Anna placed the flash drive, and perhaps her phone, inside that envelope and mailed it to Lila before boarding the subway. That would allow Anna to deny Ben’s killers the evidence while ensuring the information could still become public even if she died seeking revenge.

This is another deduction that Episode 4 has not yet confirmed as fact. Reacher and Lila return to the hotel Anna knew Lila was using, but no envelope is waiting there. Lila says it was the only address Anna knew, which makes the missing package a new mystery rather than disproving Reacher immediately. The drive could still be delayed, could have been intercepted, or could be somewhere entirely different if Anna used another plan.

Anna’s suicide was about more than the flash drive

Earlier episodes made it easy to assume Anna died because she possessed information too dangerous to survive. Episode 4 gives her decision a more personal and tragic explanation by placing Ben at the center of it. The conspiracy created the circumstances, but Reacher believes the immediate sequence was Ben’s death, Anna abandoning the exchange, her decision to retaliate and then the collapse of that plan when Reacher intervened. What remains uncertain is whether every step of his reconstruction is correct, but it fits the physical evidence far better than the idea that Anna simply panicked because she had stolen classified records.
