Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 finally makes sense of Anna Merrick’s strange final journey, but every answer pulls Jack Reacher deeper into the conspiracy surrounding the missing government files. Anna’s son Ben is found dead, Reacher reconstructs why Anna boarded the subway without the flash drive, and the episode closes with a chilling connection between Ben’s murder, Mary Ellen Daniels’ death and Indonesia.

The biggest revelation comes from the murder weapon. Both Ben and Mary Ellen appear to have been killed with a karambit, a curved knife associated in the episode with Indonesian martial arts. That discovery connects the killings to the same country at the center of John Sampson’s secret military history and Lila Hoth’s investigation.

Sampson finally tells Reacher what happened in Indonesia

Episode 4 picks up after Nolan Cahill’s suicide. Sampson is devastated by the loss of a man he served with for 11 years, but Reacher immediately recognizes that Cahill’s death has made one question more important: what did Cahill know that could drive him to jump from a roof? Over drinks, Sampson finally talks about Indonesia.

His squadron had been sent there with a group of scientists. While Cahill was involved with securing cooperation for the scientific mission, Sampson oversaw another part of the operation. In return for Indonesia’s assistance, the United States agreed to train Indonesian special forces led by General Reza Putra.

Sampson says he personally trained Putra’s soldiers in weapons and guerrilla tactics. The Americans later returned home, after which Putra used his forces against people who opposed his growing power. Sampson says Putra eventually wiped out an entire village, killing civilians, children and elderly people.

Sampson denies having anything to do with those atrocities. Still, he admits that publicly revealing his connection to Putra could destroy everything he and his political team have been building.

That gives Sampson a clear personal interest in the missing records, even if he is telling Reacher the truth about his role.

Reacher remains suspicious because Cahill followed Anna onto the subway and then killed himself once Reacher started asking questions. Whatever is on the drive may explain why.

Tamara discovers what Anna did with the government records

At the same time, Tamara, Jacob and Russell investigate the secure facility where Anna worked.

Tamara steals an employee’s badge and enters while pretending to be Anna’s replacement. The risky infiltration reveals exactly what Anna’s job involved: old government files were being scanned into a digital system before their physical copies were sent for incineration. Anna did something different with one file.

She scanned it, but she never uploaded the digital copy to the government server. Instead, she deleted the file and sent the physical documents to be burned.

The team realizes Anna must have copied the material onto the jump drive before deleting it. More importantly, the drive may now contain the only surviving copy of those documents.

That explains why so many people are prepared to kill for it.

Reacher figures out why Anna abandoned her car

A traffic jam gives Reacher another breakthrough.

Tamara’s group becomes stuck south of Philadelphia, and Reacher realizes Anna may have encountered the same bottleneck on the night she died. Rather than remain trapped in traffic, Anna exited near the Tasker-Morris subway station and continued toward Philadelphia by train. The team believes Anna had been trying to take the drive to Lila. But there was another reason for her urgency.

Their working theory is that the people who killed Mary Ellen Daniels also kidnapped Ben. Ben was leverage. Anna was apparently given a deadline to surrender the drive or lose her son.

That initially explains why she abandoned her car. Then Russell notices a problem with the theory. Anna did not have the drive when Reacher encountered her on the train.

Did Anna already know Ben was dead?

This is where Reacher reconstructs Anna’s final hours. If Anna still believed she could save Ben by exchanging the flash drive, she would have needed to bring it with her. The fact that she did not suggests that, by the time she entered the subway, she no longer believed there was anyone left to save.

Reacher believes Ben probably died while being held captive. Controlling a 250-pound college football player would not have been easy, and something may have gone wrong during the kidnapping.

Anna may have been receiving “proof of life” through phone calls or video. While stuck in traffic and worried about missing the kidnappers’ deadline, she likely demanded to see Ben again. They could no longer put him on the phone.

According to Reacher’s theory, that was when Anna understood that her son was already dead.

Importantly, Episode 4 presents this as Reacher and the team’s reconstruction rather than showing the exact events themselves.

Why did Anna kill herself on the subway?

Once Anna knew Ben was dead, her objective changed. She was no longer going to exchange the drive. She was going after his killers.

Reacher believes Anna grabbed the dark coat from her car to cover her white shirt and carried the gun she had originally intended to use for protection after recovering Ben. Now the weapon was for revenge.

Anna was not a trained fighter, but grief had pushed her beyond caring whether she survived. Then Reacher approached her.

He told Anna that he had been a cop because he thought identifying himself as someone in control would calm her down. Instead, Reacher now realizes it may have had the opposite effect.

Anna knew a police officer would have to stop and arrest an armed woman. If Reacher intervened, she would never reach Ben’s killers.

She already believed she had failed her son while he was alive. In her grief, she may then have felt that she was also failing to avenge him after his death. Reacher concludes that the pain and guilt became unbearable.

His realization carries its own guilt. He had approached Anna because he wanted to help. As he admits, he didn’t.

Where did Anna hide the flash drive?

Reacher then remembers the mail found inside Anna’s abandoned car. One opened piece of mail was a credit-card offer, but its prepaid return envelope was missing.

His theory is that Anna put the jump drive, and possibly her phone, inside that envelope and mailed it to Lila before boarding the subway.

That would explain why Anna did not have the drive when she died.

It would also give her a final insurance policy. Even if she were killed while seeking revenge, the evidence could still reach Lila and expose the people responsible.

Reacher and Lila return to her former hotel looking for the envelope. It isn’t there.

So although Reacher may have solved what Anna intended to do with the drive, Episode 4 does not confirm where it is now. It may still be somewhere in the mail system, it may have been intercepted, or Anna’s plan may have gone wrong in another way.

Ben Merrick is found dead

Before Reacher can solve the drive mystery, the team receives the news everyone feared.

Police have found Ben’s body near 9th and Callowhill after a sanitation worker reported a smell coming from a dumpster.

Jacob goes to the morgue with Tamara and Russell.

The identification destroys him. Jacob blames himself because Anna never contacted him for help and says he now has nothing left.

The scene also follows an earlier emotional moment between Jacob and Tamara. When Jacob admits that he feels powerless and fears Ben is dead, Tamara reminds him that people still care about him, including herself. Episode 4 does not turn that into a full romance, but it clearly continues developing their emotional connection.

Reacher is attacked while Lila becomes the next target

After leaving the hotel with Lila, Reacher realizes they are being followed.

The mercenaries who previously targeted Lila have apparently been watching the hotel in case she returned.

Reacher sends Lila away and confronts them himself. One of the attackers immediately demands the drive, confirming that the same group is still desperately searching for it.

Reacher defeats the men but cannot learn who employs them before police arrive. He does, however, take one of their radios. That becomes crucial.

Reacher hears an order telling the remaining men to rendezvous at the Liberty Gardens Hotel because they are moving on the “Princess’ tower.”

He understands that Lila is their target and races toward the hotel.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 ending explained: What does the karambit mean?

The ending brings two seemingly separate discoveries together.

At the morgue, the medical examiner tells Tamara and Russell that Ben’s throat was cut with the same type of weapon used to murder Mary Ellen Daniels.

Meanwhile, armed men enter Lila and Amisha’s hotel room. They demand the missing drive and carry knives rather than firearms so that nobody will hear gunshots.

The medical examiner identifies the weapon used on Ben and Mary as a karambit, a curved knife used by practitioners of certain martial arts in Indonesia.

Tamara immediately realizes the significance.

“Indonesia.”

That single word is the episode’s major connecting clue.

Indonesia is where Sampson trained General Putra’s forces. It is the country tied to the secret records Anna copied. It is central to Lila and Amisha’s story. And now a weapon associated with Indonesian martial arts appears to connect Ben and Mary Ellen’s murders.

The episode stops short of identifying the actual killer or proving that Putra ordered the murders. It also does not establish that Lila or Amisha are responsible. In fact, the closing attack suggests they are themselves being hunted by people desperate to recover the drive.

What Episode 4 does establish is that the pieces Reacher has been collecting are no longer separate.

Anna’s stolen records, Ben’s kidnapping, Mary Ellen’s murder, Cahill’s suicide, Sampson’s history with Putra and the people hunting Lila all appear to lead back toward the same Indonesian secret.

And just as Reacher races to Liberty Gardens to reach Lila, Philadelphia police storm another location in the final moments, leaving the confrontation hanging for Episode 5.

Episode 4 therefore gives Reacher his clearest picture of the conspiracy yet, but the most valuable piece is still missing: the flash drive itself.
