Youth has spent four episodes proving that Alex can turn almost any attempt at simplifying her life into another complication. Her experiment with Michael ends in Episode 4, Patrick remains difficult to forget, Ruari is still trying to rebuild his confidence after university, and even Alex’s professional life refuses to settle down. Episode 5, titled “The Holiday,” takes most of those tensions out of London and drops them into what should be a relaxing trip to Ibiza. Instead, HBO’s official setup puts Alex on a couples’ holiday surrounded by exactly the people most capable of making her question where her life is heading.

Why Does Alex Go to Ibiza?
The Ibiza trip is being organized around Sam and Frank’s 10th anniversary, giving the group a legitimate reason to escape London for a few days. Alex joins the celebration, but the guest list immediately makes the holiday more complicated than a normal anniversary trip. Lorcan, her former husband, is there with his new girlfriend, while Patrick, the man Alex still has unresolved feelings for, also arrives with a new girlfriend. Ruari accompanies Alex as her plus one.
That combination places Alex in an awkward position before the holiday even begins. Everyone around her appears to have arrived as part of a couple, while Alex is effectively paired with her son. The premise fits Youth’s recurring concern with how Alex measures her life against the people around her, particularly when she feels that turning 50 has put her on an invisible timetable. Ibiza may offer sunshine and distance from work, but it also removes many of the distractions Alex normally uses to avoid sitting with those comparisons.
Will Alex and Patrick Get Closer Again?
Patrick is the most obvious source of tension heading into Episode 5. Alex has repeatedly tried to convince herself that she wants a straightforward relationship, yet Episode 4 makes it clear that her feelings for Patrick have not disappeared simply because they are not together. Seeing him already moving forward with somebody else forces Alex to confront the possibility that waiting for Patrick to become what she wants may eventually leave her watching from the sidelines.
“The Holiday” deliberately places them in close proximity again, but Patrick will not be arriving alone. The official synopsis specifically describes both Patrick and Lorcan as bringing their new girlfriends, which makes a simple romantic reunion unlikely at the beginning of the episode. The more interesting question is whether several days together make Alex and Patrick acknowledge feelings they have repeatedly tried to keep casual, or whether the holiday finally pushes Alex toward accepting that their relationship has changed.
Why Could Lorcan Complicate the Holiday?
Lorcan gives Alex a very different kind of emotional history. Their marriage is over, and his decision to pursue work in Canada has already changed the family structure around Ruari. Youth has generally avoided turning the divorce into a simple story about two people who dislike each other, which makes seeing Lorcan with a new partner potentially more complicated than ordinary jealousy.
There is also Ruari to consider. He has already been dealing with the consequences of leaving university, while his father’s career has taken Lorcan physically further away from his everyday life. Putting Alex, Lorcan and Ruari together on holiday could give the series room to explore their family dynamic outside the usual pressures of London. Ruari being Alex’s plus one is funny on the surface, but it also reinforces how closely mother and son have become tied together since his plans for university collapsed.
What Happens After Alex and Michael Break Up?
Michael is unlikely to be the emotional center of Episode 5 because “Michael Man” already makes clear why that relationship does not work. Alex appreciates the stability and reassurance Michael offers, but those qualities cannot manufacture the attraction she keeps trying to convince herself should be there. Their breakup leaves Alex without the sensible romantic alternative she had briefly hoped might solve her dating problem.
That matters going into Ibiza because Patrick remains the unresolved option immediately afterward. Alex has repeatedly tried to replace uncertainty with practicality, first by treating dating like a deadline and later by trying to persuade herself that Michael might represent the kind of future she needs. The Ibiza trip places her in front of Patrick at the exact moment when that alternative has disappeared. Youth does not need them to reunite immediately for the situation to expose how unfinished their relationship really is.
What Could Ruari’s Ibiza Story Be?
Ruari has spent the last few episodes moving gradually from isolation toward something resembling a routine. He finally told Alex what happened around Bridget, started working at Frank’s bar, and then discovered that leaving university did not automatically remove the social consequences he was trying to escape. Ibiza gives him a chance to exist somewhere those earlier relationships are not physically surrounding him.
His presence could also make him an unexpectedly useful observer of Alex’s romantic confusion. Youth frequently lets Alex believe she is parenting Ruari while showing that Ruari understands more about his mother’s emotional life than she assumes. On a holiday where Alex is surrounded by her former husband and former romantic partner, Ruari may be the only person there who is not pretending that the situation is completely normal.
Was the Ibiza Episode Actually Filmed in Ibiza?
Although Episode 5 is set in Ibiza, the production did not film the holiday storyline there. Production Service Network confirms that Youth Episode 5 filmed in Mallorca, Spain, with the island doubling for Ibiza. Merman produced the episode with Palma Pictures providing production services in Spain, while Sharon Horgan and Rupert Friend were among the featured cast working there.
Local reporting also spotted Rupert Friend filming Youth in Sant Elm, a coastal village in Mallorca, during production in May 2026. Camera crews, lighting equipment and production vehicles were seen around the village as filming took place with Palma Pictures. The Mediterranean setting therefore remains authentic even though viewers will be seeing Mallorca presented as Ibiza.
What Should Viewers Expect From Youth Episode 5?
“The Holiday” appears designed to temporarily remove Alex from her professional problems and concentrate on the relationships she cannot neatly organize. The confirmed setup brings together her ex-husband, her ex-fling, two new girlfriends, Ruari, Sam and Frank in a place associated with escape and romance. That is almost the perfect environment for Youth to test whether Alex actually wants the future she keeps describing or whether she is still reacting to what everyone else seems to have.
The strongest storyline to watch is clearly Alex and Patrick. Episode 4 leaves Alex unable to completely move past him, while Episode 5 ensures she will have to spend an entire holiday around Patrick and his new relationship rather than simply avoiding him in London. Whatever happens in Ibiza does not need to resolve their relationship completely, but it should make it considerably harder for Alex to pretend she does not care.
