Youth has spent its opening episodes watching Alex chase the idea that turning 50 should mark the beginning of a freer life. Instead, every attempt to simplify things seems to create another responsibility. Episode 4, Michael Man, brings her back from the Frankfurt Book Fair with Ruari temporarily working at Frank’s bar, Malcolm Hammond suddenly valuable enough to pursue again, and Patrick still occupying far more of her thoughts than she wants to admit. The episode gives Alex another possible relationship in Michael, but what initially looks like a comfortable alternative to Patrick exposes a different problem: Alex wants stability without being sure she wants the man offering it.
HBO’s official description frames the episode around Sam giving Alex the unpleasant job of trying to win Malcolm back before Alex turns to Michael during a family gathering. That professional and romantic pairing proves fitting because both storylines force Alex to ask whether she can genuinely commit to something she once dismissed.
Why Does Alex Go Back to Michael?
Back in London, Alex is hardly refreshed by her Frankfurt trip. Charlotte Arbor could still leave the agency, Alex now has to swallow her pride and pursue Malcolm, and her unresolved feelings for Patrick remain close to the surface. Sam suggests that Michael might offer something Alex keeps claiming she wants: an older, emotionally available man who is interested in companionship rather than uncertainty.
Alex initially seems more interested in Patrick. She finds herself outside his home and is considering contacting him when she discovers that he is already spending time with Cara, a younger woman. Patrick introduces Alex simply as an old friend, which makes the encounter sting more than she expects. Soon afterward, an accidental call to Michael turns into a date that Alex might otherwise never have arranged.

Does Alex Actually Like Michael?
Michael is considerate, patient and far more emotionally settled than many of the men Alex has encountered. He listens to her problems and is willing to give straightforward advice when she talks about work, family and the exhausting number of people depending on her. The difficulty is not that Michael behaves badly. Alex simply cannot convince herself that the emotional comfort she feels around him is the same as romantic attraction.
She nevertheless agrees to see him again because she is increasingly attracted to what Michael represents. He has time, maturity and an interest in building something steady, all qualities that contrast with Patrick’s complicated place in her life. Alex begins imagining that perhaps she can skip the uncertain early stages of romance entirely and move straight toward the dependable companionship she associates with a long marriage.

Can Alex Convince Malcolm to Return?
At work, Sam hands Alex an assignment she finds even less appealing than dating Michael: winning Malcolm Hammond back. His self-published Goblin Seed has become an enormous commercial success, and Frankfurt has made it clear that the publishing world now sees The Juniper Chronicles as a potentially valuable series. Alex once considered Malcolm expendable, but the balance of power has completely reversed.
Malcolm understands that change and does not make Alex’s job easy. Their meeting forces her to sit across from a former client who now knows the agency needs him more than he needs it. Alex manages to keep the conversation alive and later gets enough progress for Sam to believe Malcolm may be willing to return, although the relationship is far from comfortably repaired. Ready Steady Cut similarly notes that Alex succeeds in getting Malcolm to agree to continue discussions about his next book.
Why Does Alex Ask Sam to Make Her a Partner?
Michael unexpectedly becomes useful to Alex professionally because he questions why she accepts so little recognition for everything she contributes to the agency. Alex has spent years bringing in clients, solving problems and helping Sam maintain the business, yet she continues operating as an employee rather than an equal partner. Michael’s observation stays with her.
When Sam calls with encouraging news about Malcolm, Alex finally voices that frustration. She lists what she has contributed and asks to become a partner in the agency. Sam initially laughs at the suggestion, leaving Alex embarrassed and disappointed, but the moment is important because Alex has finally stopped waiting for someone else to recognize what she believes she deserves.
Why Do Alex and Michael Break Up?
Alex tries to make the relationship feel more serious by bringing Michael into her family life. She invites him to a gathering with Ruari and her parents, imagining that his maturity might make him naturally comfortable inside the complicated household she already has. Instead, the occasion makes their incompatibility harder to ignore.
Michael wants an actual romantic relationship, while Alex increasingly treats him as a ready-made companion. She appreciates his calmness, advice and willingness to participate in family life, but repeatedly pulls away whenever he tries to make their relationship more intimate. Eventually Michael recognizes the imbalance and decides there is little point continuing something in which they want fundamentally different things.

Alex reacts badly because Michael is rejecting an arrangement she had convinced herself could work. The breakup also forces her to admit that her feelings remain tied to Patrick, even while she insists that she wants something safer and more predictable. Michael may fit Alex’s theoretical idea of the right man, but Episode 4 shows that compatibility cannot be created simply because someone looks sensible on paper.
What Happens to Ruari at the Bar?
Ruari’s attempt to move forward after leaving university also runs into trouble. Working at Frank’s bar gives him somewhere to go and something resembling a routine, but his unresolved situation with Bridget and Mia follows him there. When they arrive with friends, Ruari tries to speak with Bridget and put the university incident behind them.
The conversation deteriorates after Mia intervenes, and tension with the group turns into a brief physical confrontation. Ruari later returns home visibly shaken, adding another setback just as Alex is dealing with the end of her relationship with Michael. Ready Steady Cut’s Episode 4 account similarly describes the bar encounter as another consequence of the reputation Ruari has been struggling with since university.
Youth Episode 4 Ending Explained: What Do Alex and Ruari Realize?
Michael’s departure leaves Alex without the stable relationship she had briefly tried to manufacture, while Ruari returns from work feeling as though he still cannot escape what happened at university. The episode brings mother and son back together at a moment when neither has managed to solve the problem dominating their life. Alex cannot decide when to push harder and when to accept that something is not right for her, while Ruari is struggling with the same question in a very different context.
Their final conversation gives Michael Man its emotional point. Alex and Ruari are both trying to navigate the space between being too forceful and withdrawing completely when situations become difficult. Alex has spent the episode chasing Malcolm, challenging Sam, experimenting with Michael and thinking about Patrick, while Ruari is still learning how to respond to people who have already formed an opinion about him.
The ending does not fix either character’s life, but it brings them closer to understanding each other. Alex’s mistake with Michael is not that she tried dating an older man, but that she attempted to turn emotional convenience into romantic compatibility. Ruari’s struggle is similarly not something that disappears because he has left university. Episode 4 closes with both characters still uncertain, but at least able to recognize that finding the right balance may matter more than forcing an immediate solution.
