Ben Merrick’s disappearance stops being a mystery in Reacher Season 4 Episode 4, but the identity of his murderer does not. Ben is confirmed dead after his body is recovered from a dumpster near 9th and Callowhill, and the medical examiner later determines that his throat was cut with the same type of weapon used to kill Mary Ellen Daniels. That weapon is a karambit, which gives Reacher’s investigation its first strong physical link between the two deaths and the Indonesian side of the conspiracy. What Episode 4 does not confirm is the person who actually wielded the knife, so blaming Lila Hoth, Amisha, General Reza Putra or any other specific character would go beyond the evidence currently shown.

Spoiler Alert

Ben was probably kidnapped because of Anna’s flash drive

The strongest explanation for Ben’s disappearance is that he was taken to force his mother, Anna Merrick, to surrender the stolen government records. Reacher’s group reconstructs that scenario after working out why Anna abandoned her car and hurried toward Philadelphia by subway. They believe whoever killed Mary Ellen also took Ben and then gave Anna a deadline to deliver the flash drive. Episode 4 treats this as the team’s “working theory,” rather than showing the kidnapping itself, so the broad logic is persuasive even though some details remain unverified.

Ben was an effective target because Anna had something her enemies desperately needed and because threatening her son could force her to move quickly. Anna had secretly copied material from a government document-processing facility before allowing the paper records to be destroyed, meaning the drive could contain the only surviving copy. The people pursuing it therefore could not simply retrieve another version from an archive. Once Ben became their leverage, Anna’s attempt to give the information to Lila turned into a race to keep her son alive.

Ben appears to have died before Anna reached the subway

Reacher’s most important deduction is that Anna probably knew Ben was already dead before she boarded the train where she later took her own life. The clue is not something found on Ben’s body but something Anna did not have with her: the flash drive. If she still expected to exchange the drive for her son, arriving without it would have destroyed the kidnappers’ only reason to release him. Her decision to separate herself from the drive therefore tells Reacher that, in her mind, there was no longer a hostage to save.

The group proposes that Anna had been receiving proof-of-life updates while following the kidnappers’ instructions. Reacher speculates that these could have been calls or video, and that Anna demanded another update while trapped in traffic and worrying about the deadline. When the kidnappers could no longer put Ben on the phone, she may have understood why. This remains a reconstruction rather than a confirmed flashback, but it explains both her behavior and the disappearance of the drive more convincingly than the idea that she simply forgot the one object needed for the exchange.

Did Ben die during the kidnapping?

Episode 4 does not tell us exactly when or why Ben was killed, but Reacher considers the possibility that the kidnapping itself went wrong. Ben is described as a roughly 250-pound college football player, which would have made controlling him considerably harder than holding a child or a physically vulnerable hostage. Reacher reasons that kidnappings are rarely clean operations and that Ben could have fought his captors, forcing them into a situation they had not planned. The episode does not show this happening, so it should be treated as Reacher’s explanation rather than a confirmed account of Ben’s final moments.

There is another possibility that cannot yet be excluded: Ben may have been killed deliberately once his captors believed Anna would comply or once they decided he had become a liability. The series has not revealed enough about the killers’ command structure to distinguish between an accidental escalation and a planned execution. Either scenario would explain why Anna suddenly stopped receiving proof that he was alive. What matters for Episode 4 is that his death appears to have occurred early enough to change Anna’s intentions before she entered the subway.

The karambit connects Ben to Mary Ellen Daniels

The strongest evidence about Ben’s killer arrives in the final minutes. The medical examiner tells Tamara that Ben’s throat was cut using the same type of weapon that killed Mary Ellen Daniels, the young woman who had been with Ben before both of them disappeared from the story. That detail makes it much less likely that Ben’s death and Mary’s murder were unrelated acts of violence. Someone connected to the same operation, or at least trained and equipped in a similar way, appears to have been involved in both killings.

Episode 4 identifies the weapon as a karambit and specifically emphasizes its association with certain Indonesian martial arts. That matters because Indonesia has already become the central geographic connection between Lila, Amisha, General Reza Putra, Sampson’s Delta Force history and Anna’s stolen records. The episode is deliberately joining those threads when Tamara reacts to the medical examiner’s description with one word: “Indonesia.” It is a major clue, but it is still a clue rather than a confession.

Does the karambit prove Putra’s people killed Ben?

No, and Episode 4 is careful not to make that leap. Sampson admits that he trained Indonesian special forces commanded by Putra years earlier, after which Putra allegedly used those forces against political opponents and civilians. The flash drive is believed to contain records connected to that operation, giving people associated with those events a possible motive to recover it. However, nothing in Episode 4 identifies the knife wielder as one of Putra’s soldiers or establishes that Putra personally ordered Ben’s murder.

Lila and Amisha are also Indonesian, but the ending actually complicates any simple theory that they are controlling the killers. Armed men break into their hotel room and demand the drive while threatening them with knives, making Lila and Amisha appear to be targets of the same search rather than obvious commanders of it. That does not prove everything Lila has told Reacher is true, but it means nationality alone cannot identify Ben’s killer. The series wants viewers to recognize the Indonesian connection without yet knowing which side of that history each character belongs to.

Who killed Ben Merrick?

As of Episode 4, Ben’s individual killer remains unknown, although the evidence strongly links his death to the same larger operation responsible for Mary Ellen Daniels’ murder and the hunt for Anna’s flash drive. Reacher himself tells Lila that the same people pursuing them most likely killed Ben, but even he frames that conclusion through the team’s working theory rather than a solved case. The karambit substantially narrows the investigation by connecting both murders to the season’s Indonesian thread. The next step is not proving that Ben was murdered, because Episode 4 has already done that, but discovering who controls the professional killers and why the material Anna stole is dangerous enough to justify killing everyone who gets close to it.
