Naomi Yang plays Shen Jia, the missing Chinese microbiologist at the center of Vigil Season 3’s Svalbard mystery. Jia spends much of the opening episodes as the person everyone is searching for, before Yang gets considerably more screen time once Kirsten finally finds her in Episode 4. Yang may already be familiar to British drama viewers from Under Salt Marsh, Wolfe, DI Ray, Peaky Blinders and Maternal. Gamers may recognize her even faster, because she is also the English-language voice of Sage in Valorant and Needle Knight Leda in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Who Is Shen Jia in Vigil Season 3?
Shen Jia is a microbiologist whose disappearance becomes one of the main mysteries of Season 3. She has been conducting secretive research involving cyanobacteria on Svalbard, and her work quickly attracts interest far beyond the scientific community. By Episode 4, British and Russian characters fear that what Jia discovered could be developed into something lethal, while Henrik Becken takes her away from Kirsten and attempts to get her to an aircraft.
Jia herself complicates that interpretation at the airport. After Henrik is shot, she insists that her discovery is neither dangerous nor a weapon and describes it as something that could have been an answer rather than a threat. Episode 4 ends before explaining exactly what she means, making Jia much more than the missing scientist who launches the investigation. Naomi Yang consequently moves from being an elusive presence in the story to one of the characters most likely to shape the final two episodes.
Where Have You Seen Naomi Yang Before?
Yang has built a substantial television career before joining Vigil. Radio Times lists her previous work across dramas including Brassic, Wolfe, Peaky Blinders, Maternal, DI Ray, Nightsleeper, Protection, Grace and Under Salt Marsh. Her Peaky Blinders role was Li in the show’s sixth season, while Wolfe gave her the larger role of Maggy.
One of her most prominent recent roles came in Sky’s Under Salt Marsh, where she plays newly promoted detective Jess Deng opposite Rafe Spall’s Eric Bull. Yang discussed that series shortly before Vigil Season 3, meaning the two projects have given her two very different mystery-drama roles in relatively quick succession. In Under Salt Marsh, she is one of the investigators trying to solve the case, while Vigil makes Shen Jia the scientist whose disappearance and knowledge drive much of the investigation.
Naomi Yang Was Born in Beijing and Raised in Manchester
Yang is a Chinese-British actor and writer who was born in Beijing and raised in Manchester. Her screen career includes the 2014 film Lilting, Channel 4’s Chimerica and Sky’s Wolfe, but her work has also extended beyond acting. The Edinburgh TV Festival’s profile of Yang notes that she has written her own material and was part of its New Writers Collective in 2023.
Her career also received industry recognition through BAFTA Elevate. BAFTA selected Yang for its 2019-20 cohort, an initiative designed to support performers from underrepresented backgrounds as they progressed into larger television and film opportunities. At that stage, BAFTA highlighted Lilting, Deep Water and Chimerica among her credits.
You May Also Know Naomi Yang’s Voice
Yang has another career that viewers watching Vigil would never necessarily connect with her face. She voices Sage in Riot Games’ Valorant, one of the game’s best-known playable agents. The role has given Yang a huge audience outside British television, and her credit is confirmed in the game’s English voice cast.
She also voices Needle Knight Leda in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Leda is a major figure among the characters following Miquella into the Land of Shadow, giving Yang another recognizable performance for players of one of the decade’s biggest fantasy games. Those roles make Yang’s career unusually broad, ranging from police dramas and prestige television to theatre and high-profile video games.
Yang Has Also Worked With the Royal Shakespeare Company
Yang’s work is not limited to screens and recording booths. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed stage adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro for its 2023 return to the Barbican, playing Tsukiko. The RSC production had already become a major theatrical success, winning six Olivier Awards following its original run.
Her combination of theatre, television, film, writing and voice acting helps explain why Shen Jia does not feel like a conventional exposition-heavy scientist character. Season 3 asks Yang to spend substantial stretches of the story frightened and isolated while still leaving the audience unsure about exactly how much Jia knows. By the end of Episode 4, that controlled uncertainty becomes crucial because Jia is suddenly the only person capable of explaining what everyone else has been fighting over.

What Was Filming Vigil in Svalbard Like for Naomi Yang?
Unlike many productions that recreate Arctic scenery elsewhere, Vigil Season 3 took part of its cast to the real Svalbard archipelago. Yang recalled spending time on a glacier in crampons with a small crew and an armed safety escort because of the possibility of polar bears. She also described seeing reindeer, taking boat trips and spending much of the early Svalbard shoot alongside the actors playing the SBS soldiers.
The location is particularly relevant to Jia because her character is tied more closely to Svalbard’s remote scientific environment than almost anyone else in the season. Yang had said before the season premiered that she already loved Vigil and was excited to join its third outing. Her role has turned out to be much more than a guest appearance, with Shen Jia effectively becoming the human key to Season 3’s central geopolitical mystery.
Yang is also continuing to add major television work beyond Vigil. She has been announced among the new cast members joining Line of Duty Season 7, another World Productions drama, although details of her character remain under wraps. For viewers discovering her through Shen Jia, there is therefore a good chance she will soon be familiar from another major BBC crime drama as well.
