Vigil Season 3 Episode 4 picks up directly from Henrik Becken’s suspicious appearance at the end of the previous chapter. Kirsten Longacre has discovered that the missing Russian burner phone belonging to Daniel Hodge is in Henrik’s possession, making the Director of Svalbard the leading suspect in Hodge’s murder. Unfortunately, Kirsten is already heading into the Arctic wilderness with the very man she may need to arrest.
What initially looks like a hunt for a dangerous biological weapon becomes much more complicated by the end. Henrik kidnaps Shen Jia, a possible Chinese extraction plan emerges, and the final moments completely overturn what Amy and Kirsten thought they understood about Jia’s discovery.

Why Does Kirsten Go With Henrik?
Kirsten believes Lorna’s information can finally lead them to Shen Jia, who has been hiding several miles north of the hub. Henrik knows the terrain, so the two travel together toward an abandoned facility once used by the Germans as a weapons store during the Second World War.
What Kirsten does not initially know is how strongly the evidence has turned against Henrik. Daniel Hodge had apparently been using a Russian burner phone to contact the FSB, and that same phone has now ended up in Henrik’s possession. Amy’s working theory is simple: Henrik discovered Hodge was spying for Russia, confronted him and killed him, possibly during a violent struggle.
Amy becomes even more concerned when she learns Kirsten has left with Henrik without knowing he is now their prime suspect.
Lorna eventually tells Amy where Jia has been hiding, allowing Amy to follow them into the tundra. The problem is that almost everyone now wants Jia for a different reason, and following her trail risks leading Russia, China and anyone else interested in her research directly to her.

Where Is Shen Jia Hiding?
Kirsten and Henrik eventually reach the abandoned weapons store and discover that Jia really has been hiding there.
Jia is terrified and does not immediately trust either of them. Kirsten identifies herself as a British detective and explains that Lorna gave her the location because she believed Kirsten could help. Kirsten is also concerned about the research sample Jia has apparently carried with her since leaving the hub.
At this point, everyone still believes the sample is connected to a potentially lethal biological weapon. Kirsten has been warned that even if the sample is not technically a weapon itself, it could still be toxic and dangerous if mishandled.
Jia’s priority, however, is not explaining the science. She wants to know what happened to Lorna.
The confrontation quickly becomes chaotic. Henrik’s behavior turns increasingly aggressive, and after Amy arrives at the facility, he attacks Kirsten, takes Jia and escapes with the ATVs. Kirsten is injured in the process, leaving Amy unable to pursue him immediately.
Henrik has now stopped behaving like a worried public official and effectively become Jia’s kidnapper.
Why Does Henrik Kidnap Jia?
Henrik’s actions reveal that finding Jia was never simply about protecting her.
Once he has Jia under his control, Henrik contacts an unknown person and announces that he has her. He tells whoever is on the other end to give someone else the “green light.” Curiously, Henrik claims Jia does not have the sample with her, even though he knows exactly where it is. That lie becomes extremely important.
Rather than immediately handing over both Jia and the sample, Henrik secretly keeps the sample himself. Jia later notices what he has done and accuses him of effectively selling her to whoever is willing to take her.
Henrik insists that what he is doing is meant to serve people, but Episode 4 never gives him enough time to fully explain that claim.
His plan seems to require Jia alive. That causes Amy and Kirsten to reconsider the original Hodge murder theory. If Jia witnessed something connected to Hodge’s death, Henrik could have killed her when he had the opportunity. Instead, he goes to considerable trouble to keep her alive and transport her elsewhere.
The reason may be simple: whoever wants the sample also needs the scientist capable of understanding and reproducing it.
Did Henrik Kill Daniel Hodge?
Episode 4 does not confirm that Henrik killed Hodge. The Russian phone remains strong evidence against him. Kirsten and Amy initially believe Henrik may have discovered Hodge’s connection to the FSB and killed him before taking the phone. Once Henrik kidnaps Jia, however, that explanation begins to look incomplete.
Amy and Kirsten discuss the contradiction while stranded in the Arctic. If Henrik killed Hodge and Jia witnessed the murder, keeping Jia alive makes little sense unless Henrik needs her for something more important. They begin to suspect that Henrik is working with another party interested in Jia’s discovery.
That possibility also raises a different question about Hodge. Perhaps whoever Henrik is working with had a reason to stop Hodge from helping Russia obtain Jia’s research.
For now, Henrik remains a serious suspect, but Vigil deliberately refuses to turn suspicion into proof. His possession of the Russian phone has not yet been fully explained, and his connection to Hodge’s death remains an open part of the mystery.
What Happens Between Amy and Kirsten?
After Henrik escapes, Amy and Kirsten are left stranded in worsening Arctic weather. Henrik has taken the ATV keys and their survival equipment, while Kirsten is hurt badly enough that Amy worries she may have a concussion.
The situation finally forces them to confront the tension that has been building between them.
Kirsten feels that Amy has been questioning her decisions ever since she was shot. Amy, meanwhile, believes Kirsten deliberately shuts her out and makes major decisions alone because she wants to prove she does not need Amy’s help.
Kirsten eventually admits that returning to work after spending a year as a mother was frightening. She needed to prove to herself that she could still do the job independently and feel like herself again.
Amy has insecurities of her own. She admits that she wants their son to see her the way he sees Kirsten rather than treating her as the “spare” parent.
Their conversation does not magically solve every problem, but it gives them a better understanding of what has been driving their arguments. More importantly, Amy makes it clear that she does believe in Kirsten, something Kirsten has desperately needed to hear.
Is Henrik Working for China?
The investigation eventually points toward a possible Chinese extraction operation.
Colonel Zamorin becomes increasingly suspicious of Chen after questioning him about Jia. Chen speaks about wanting to protect Jia in a way that makes Zamorin wonder who else is included in that plan.
The biggest clue comes from information Chen appears reluctant to reveal. The investigators identify ENSB, the airport code connected to Svalbard, along with ZBAA, which points to Beijing. They also find what appears to be the tail number of a Chinese aircraft.
The implication is hard to ignore: someone may be preparing to fly Jia directly from Svalbard to Beijing.
Henrik’s earlier phone call fits that theory. He already told an unidentified contact that he had Jia and that they could proceed.
Still, Episode 4 does not definitively establish that Henrik is simply a Chinese agent. His decision to conceal the sample from the people apparently expecting Jia suggests he has his own agenda as well.
That distinction becomes even more important at the airport.
What Happens to Henrik at the Airport?
Amy, Kirsten, Zamorin and the others realize that Henrik is likely heading for the airport and race there before Jia can be taken off Svalbard.
Jia has already realized that Henrik is hiding her sample. She questions his motives and warns that whoever he is dealing with will turn against him once they have what they want. When the authorities reach the airport, they find Henrik with Jia. A tense standoff follows.
Henrik uses the sample as leverage, knowing everyone still believes it could be extremely dangerous. He tries to continue toward the aircraft while warning the others to keep their distance. The situation ends with gunfire and Henrik being shot.
Episode 4 does not clearly establish that Henrik dies. In fact, the characters immediately talk about getting him to a hospital, so he should be considered alive unless a later episode confirms otherwise.
More intriguing is what Henrik tries to say after being shot. He apologizes and begins telling them that he was “never going to…” before he is unable to complete the sentence.
That unfinished confession could be crucial. Henrik may have been about to say that he never intended to give away the sample, never intended to harm Jia or never intended to complete whatever deal had been arranged. Episode 4 intentionally leaves the sentence unfinished.
Ending Explained: Is Jia’s Discovery Really a Bioweapon?
No – at least according to Jia herself. This is the biggest twist in Vigil Season 3 Episode 4.
Almost everyone has spent the episode operating under the assumption that Jia discovered a biological weapon. Russia wants the sample, Britain fears what could happen if it leaves Svalbard, and the apparent Chinese operation makes it seem as though another global power wants control of the same dangerous technology.
Jia’s reaction after Henrik is shot changes the entire meaning of the story.
She desperately tells the others that the sample is not dangerous and that it is not a weapon. More importantly, she says they have completely misunderstood what she created, describing it instead as the “answer to everything.” Episode 4 ends before Jia explains what that means.
Therefore, the episode does not reveal the true function of Jia’s discovery. We know it involves her cyanobacteria research and that other characters have interpreted its properties as potentially dangerous, but Jia directly rejects the bioweapon theory.
Her statement also reframes her earlier actions. Jia may not have run because she regretted creating a weapon. She may have fled because she realized that governments would misunderstand, weaponize or fight over a discovery she considered enormously beneficial.
It also makes Henrik’s statement about serving people more interesting. He may know more about the true purpose of Jia’s research than Amy and Kirsten realize.
The central question heading into the next episode is consequently no longer simply who controls the supposed weapon. It is what Jia actually discovered – and why something she considers capable of solving an enormous problem has already pushed Russia, China and Britain toward conflict.
