Netflix’s Who Is Martin Mull? spends much of its time revealing the creative life that existed behind Martin Mull’s familiar television persona, particularly his lifelong devotion to painting. The documentary also brings renewed attention to the family that knew a different version of the comedian, actor, musician and artist away from the screen. At the…
Less of a Stranger spends much of its story showing Jan Borysewicz fighting anyone who attempts to decide what his life should look like. His father doubts music can provide him with a future, the political system places limits on artistic freedom, and the music business eventually presents its own demands once Lady Pank becomes…
Less of a Stranger ends at a point when Jan Borysewicz appears to be rebuilding both himself and Lady Pank after one of the most turbulent periods of his career. For viewers discovering the guitarist through Netflix, that conclusion naturally creates another question: what happened to him after the events shown in the movie? Borysewicz…
Netflix’s Less of a Stranger, originally titled Mniej obcy, is built around a musician whose name may be unfamiliar to many international viewers but carries enormous weight in Polish rock. Mikołaj Bukrewicz plays Jan Borysewicz, the guitarist and songwriter whose determination to make music eventually leads to the creation of Lady Pank. The film moves…
Netflix’s Who Is Martin Mull? carries an unusual second story behind the one unfolding on screen. The documentary celebrates Martin Mull’s career as a comedian, musician, actor and painter, but it also represents one of the final creative projects of Bob Saget, who began filming Mull years before either man’s passing. What started as Saget’s…
Netflix’s Who Is Martin Mull? is built around a question that sounds simple until the documentary begins trying to answer it. Martin Mull was recognizable to several generations as a comedian and actor, from Fernwood 2 Night and Clue to Roseanne, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Arrested Development, but those credits only explain part of…

The “Fall” franchise is already climbing again. Just weeks after “Fall 2: Deadpoint” expanded the survival thriller beyond the isolated tower of the original film, work on “Fall 3” has moved into production with Scott Mann returning to the director’s chair. That development makes the final minutes of “Deadpoint” particularly important. Rather than ending Jax…
Rob Savage’s Other Mommy turns an ordinary family home into the center of a deeply unsettling supernatural story. Jessica Chastain plays Ursula as well as the entity that takes on her appearance, while Arabella Olivia Clark stars as eight-year-old Bela, the child who begins communicating with the figure she calls Other Mommy. Jay Duplass plays…
A beach bar built on a Vancouver shoreline in November is a good place to begin looking for The Social Reckoning. Aaron Sorkin’s film used the Canadian city for a story centered on American people and institutions, finding locations that could suggest a very different world from the one outside the camera frame. The filming…
Bassam Tariq’s Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother follows Latif, played by Mahershala Ali, through a Houston shaped by grief, faith, family and competing communities. After the loss of his wife, the devout father and former contract killer is left caring for three children while circumstances pull him back toward a life he had hoped…
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother surrounds Mahershala Ali with familiar faces, but the family at the center of Bassam Tariq’s film is just as important as its adversaries. Adia and Jahleel Kamara play the older children of Ali’s Latif, while John Cho and Giancarlo Esposito occupy very different positions in his life. The ensemble…
