American Horror Story: 13 has spent much of its Coven reunion reopening old doors, but Episode 8, “Hell No,” does something more interesting than simply bringing back another familiar face. Marie Laveau’s return is tied directly to the supernatural rules Cordelia has disturbed by rescuing Fiona Goode from the underworld. Papa Legba is willing to help the witches against the growing threat around them, but he refuses to do it without Marie at his side. Getting the Voodoo Queen back, however, requires someone else to take her place.

That person is Queenie. Her choice is not random, and it is not presented as Papa Legba simply selecting another witch for punishment. Episode 8 builds the exchange around Cordelia’s interference with the boundary between the living world and Hell, establishing a new rule after Fiona’s unexpected escape. By the time Marie walks back into Miss Robichaux’s Academy, the episode has effectively turned her return into a bargain involving Fiona, Cordelia, Queenie and Papa Legba.

Papa Legba Needs Marie Laveau

The witches turn to Papa Legba after Fiona and Cordelia conclude that the supernatural force moving against the Coven is connected to Satan. Cordelia needs information, and Papa appears to know more than he initially wants to reveal. Their meeting becomes complicated almost immediately when he discovers that Fiona is no longer where he expects her to be. Cordelia’s ability to remove her mother from Hell threatens the authority he exercises as its gatekeeper.

Cordelia uses that weakness as leverage. She promises to destroy every record of the ancient spell that brought Fiona back and to allow the knowledge to disappear with her if Papa helps the Coven. He eventually listens, but there is another condition: he says he cannot give them what they need without his “voodoo mama.” The reference is unmistakably to Marie Laveau, bringing Angela Bassett’s character back into the Coven story once again.

Marie is particularly important because Papa suggests that even he does not feel safe discussing the coming conflict openly. He warns that the walls and mirrors are effectively watching them and says he needs protection before revealing more. According to Papa, only his high priestess knows how to provide what he needs. That makes Marie’s return more than fan service: Season 13 is positioning her as someone with knowledge or magical protection that the Salem witches cannot provide on their own.

Why Someone Has to Take Marie’s Place

The biggest obstacle is not finding Marie. Papa Legba can apparently bring her back, but Cordelia has already disrupted the normal order by taking Fiona out of Hell without his permission. He therefore refuses to allow another person to leave the underworld freely. His solution is a direct exchange: one soul can come up only if another goes down.

That rule is especially important because American Horror Story has used similar supernatural bargains before. In Apocalypse, Cordelia arranged for Marie’s return through Papa Legba by offering Dinah Stevens’ soul in exchange. Season 13 is therefore not inventing the idea that Marie can return through a transaction with Papa, although the circumstances are different this time.

What has changed is Cordelia’s power. She has demonstrated that she can bypass Papa altogether through the Forgotten Way, something that makes him considerably less secure in his position. His new “one soul up, one soul down” condition can be read as an attempt to restore balance after Cordelia has found a way around the usual gatekeeper. Episode 8 does not establish this as a universal law of the afterlife, but it clearly makes it Papa’s condition for helping the Coven now.

Why Fiona Does Not Go Back to Hell

Fiona volunteers almost immediately. She knows exactly what returning would mean because she has already experienced her personal Hell, an endless existence built around everything she finds unbearable. Yet Fiona tells Cordelia that she would endure it again if doing so could help her daughter. It is one of the clearest signs that Season 13 is intentionally changing the emotional dynamic between them.

Cordelia refuses because Fiona is too important to the next part of the plan. She knows Marie better than almost anyone in the room, including the long and difficult history between Salem magic and Marie’s voodoo practice. Fiona and Marie have been enemies, reluctant partners and rivals before, which makes Fiona uniquely suited to push Marie toward another alliance. Sending Fiona back would solve Papa’s exchange problem while creating another problem for the Coven on Earth.

Cordelia then offers herself, but that plan is rejected as well. She has only recently recovered and is still weakened after what happened at Miss Robichaux’s. Losing the reigning Supreme while the Coven is preparing for its largest confrontation would also leave the witches without their leader. Queenie realizes that someone else has to make the choice.

Why Queenie Volunteers to Go to Hell

Queenie steps forward voluntarily and makes it clear that she understands the seriousness of the bargain. Cordelia tries to stop her, but Queenie does not treat herself as a disposable member of the Coven. Instead, her decision comes from confidence in what she can endure and from her desire to protect the witches around her. Papa even comments on the condition of her heart, framing Queenie’s decision as an act made without corruption or selfish intent.

There is another layer to Queenie’s choice because she has more experience with the supernatural boundaries surrounding Hell than many of the younger witches. Coven and Apocalypse repeatedly placed her at the center of stories involving Marie, Papa Legba and the afterlife. She once descended into the underworld while searching for answers about Marie, and her history with the Voodoo Queen has always complicated the division between Salem witches and voodoo practitioners. Season 13 uses that history without turning the scene into a lengthy recap.

Once the exchange is accepted, Queenie enters her own personal Hell, which takes the form of a seemingly endless shift at a fried chicken restaurant. Delphine LaLaurie appears there as an especially unpleasant customer, revisiting one of Coven’s longest-running rivalries. The sequence is played with dark comedy rather than as a simple punishment scene, while also confirming that Queenie has genuinely crossed into the underworld as part of Papa’s bargain.

How Marie Laveau Returns

Marie appears at Miss Robichaux’s only after Queenie has gone below, meaning Papa Legba has honored the exchange. The episode does not show Queenie physically finding Marie and escorting her out. Instead, Papa controls the transaction, with Queenie’s arrival allowing Marie to return to the living world. Fiona is waiting for her, and their old hostility resurfaces almost immediately.

Papa quickly stops the confrontation because their personal history is no longer the priority. He tells them that Salem magic and Bayou magic will need to work together against the greater supernatural threat confronting them. Fiona and Marie reluctantly agree to a detente, recreating the kind of uneasy alliance they formed during Coven when both sides faced a common enemy. Current coverage of Episodes 7 and 8 similarly identifies their renewed alliance as one of the central developments of the two episodes.

Marie is therefore back because Papa Legba believes her knowledge is essential, while Queenie goes to Hell because Cordelia can no longer take another soul out of the underworld without paying Papa’s price. It is less a conventional resurrection than an exchange negotiated between magical factions. The arrangement also leaves one major question unresolved: whether Queenie will remain there once the Coven’s current mission is over.

Is Queenie Stuck in Hell Permanently?

Episode 8 does not establish Queenie’s fate as permanent. Before she leaves, the witches push Papa for an assurance that she can eventually return, and Cordelia makes it clear that she intends to challenge him if necessary once their larger mission succeeds. That does not amount to a guaranteed escape, but it tells viewers that the Coven has not accepted Queenie’s absence as final.

The more interesting possibility is that Queenie’s return may depend on repairing the imbalance Cordelia created with the Forgotten Way. Papa now knows that Cordelia can interfere with the gates he controls, while Cordelia knows that Papa needs her promise to erase the spell. That leaves both sides with leverage, and Queenie is effectively caught in the middle of that negotiation. Season 13 has not closed the door on her at all, which makes her eventual return one of the clearest threads for the remaining episodes.
