American Horror Story: 13 brings the witches of Miss Robichaux’s Academy back into the center of the story in Episode 6, “The Return of Devil’s Night,” but one of the episode’s most important developments involves a newcomer rather than Cordelia, Madison or Queenie. Morwenna, played by Alex Consani, demonstrates a magical ability so advanced that even Cordelia is unsettled by how quickly her powers are developing.
The timing immediately raises an important Coven question: is Morwenna becoming the next Supreme? Episode 6 does not confirm that she is, and possessing one extraordinary ability has never been enough to inherit the Supremacy. Still, the way Cordelia reacts to Morwenna, combined with the rules established in Coven and Apocalypse, makes her sudden growth something viewers are clearly supposed to notice.
What Power Does Morwenna Have?
During Cordelia’s examination of the younger witches, Morwenna demonstrates an ability referred to as Resurgence. She takes a dead toad and restores it not merely to life, but to an earlier stage of its existence, turning it back into a living tadpole. The feat surprises Cordelia because Morwenna appears to have developed the ability with unusual speed.
Cordelia presses her about when the power first appeared, but Morwenna is reluctant to give her a clear answer. That only makes the Supreme more suspicious, because several younger witches are beginning to develop abilities faster than expected. TVLine’s Episode 6 coverage similarly describes Morwenna’s gift as an unusually advanced ability and notes that Cordelia interprets the coven’s sudden growth as preparation for an approaching conflict.
The distinction between simply reviving something and returning it to an earlier form may prove important. Morwenna does not just restart the toad’s life. She appears to reverse part of its biological progression, suggesting that her magic may involve restoration on a much deeper level.
Why Is Cordelia Worried About Morwenna?
Cordelia is not frightened because Morwenna has magic. Miss Robichaux’s exists specifically to help young witches understand and control their abilities, and powerful students have passed through the academy before. What troubles Cordelia is how quickly those abilities are appearing and how advanced they already seem to be.
She concludes that magic itself may sense the danger coming toward the coven and is strengthening the witches in response. That interpretation fits what American Horror Story previously established in Coven, where the approaching end of Fiona Goode’s reign coincided with younger witches manifesting increasingly powerful gifts. FX’s own Coven episode guide describes the girls developing powerful new abilities as Fiona’s time as Supreme neared its conclusion.

Episode 6 therefore deliberately recreates a familiar situation. A reigning Supreme is under enormous pressure, younger witches are suddenly becoming stronger, and questions about succession are beginning to emerge at precisely the moment the coven faces an outside threat.
Is Morwenna the New Supreme?
For now, Morwenna is not confirmed as the next Supreme. Episode 6 gives viewers a reason to consider the possibility, but American Horror Story has established a much higher standard for determining who actually inherits the position.
Coven ultimately decided the succession through the Seven Wonders. Several witches displayed exceptional individual gifts, and more than one looked capable of becoming Fiona’s successor, but Cordelia only became the new Supreme after proving that she could complete the full set of tests. FX’s official description of the Coven finale simply says that “a new Supreme rises,” referring to the episode in which Cordelia ultimately proves herself.
Morwenna has not attempted the Seven Wonders in Season 13, nor has the series shown her possessing all of the abilities required of a Supreme. Her Resurgence power makes her exceptional, but it does not by itself establish that she is Cordelia’s successor.
Morwenna’s Situation Resembles Mallory’s
The more interesting comparison may be Mallory from Apocalypse. Mallory initially appeared to be another unusually gifted young witch before demonstrating abilities that surpassed what the coven expected. Her rapidly expanding power eventually led Cordelia to recognize that Mallory was developing into the next Supreme.
FX’s official Apocalypse episode guide explicitly describes Mallory as the “Supreme-elect” after tests of her powers reveal more about her potential. The season ultimately makes her magical growth central to the witches’ response to Michael Langdon and the apocalypse.
Morwenna’s introduction follows a similar pattern on the surface. She is young, her powers are developing at an extraordinary rate, and those abilities become important just as a major supernatural threat closes in on the coven. That does not mean the show is simply repeating Mallory’s story, but the parallel is strong enough to make Cordelia’s concern understandable.
Is Resurgence One of the Seven Wonders?
Morwenna’s Resurgence should not automatically be treated as proof that she has mastered the Seven Wonders. The traditional Seven Wonders used to determine the Supreme include abilities such as telekinesis, mind control, pyrokinesis, divination and other established magical tests. Individual witches can possess several powerful gifts without becoming Supreme.
American Horror Story has also repeatedly shown that witches can develop rare abilities outside the most familiar categories. That is why Morwenna’s particular gift may matter less as a checkbox toward becoming Supreme and more as evidence of how dramatically her magical potential is increasing.
The important clue is Cordelia’s reaction. She is not simply impressed by Morwenna’s performance. She believes the sudden development of these abilities means something larger is happening to the coven.
Could Morwenna Bring Cordelia Back?
Episode 6 makes Morwenna’s power even more relevant because of what happens to Cordelia at the end. James Patrick March and his Devil’s Night group arrive at Miss Robichaux’s while Cordelia is separated from the other witches, leaving the Supreme apparently gone by the time the episode ends. TVLine notes that Morwenna’s newly demonstrated power provides one obvious reason not to assume Cordelia’s fate is permanent.
If Resurgence can work on a human being as effectively as it worked on the toad, Morwenna could potentially become crucial in Episode 7. The series has not established the limits of her ability, however, and restoring Cordelia would presumably be considerably more difficult than restoring a small animal.
That possibility may explain why Episode 6 goes out of its way to demonstrate Morwenna’s gift immediately before placing Cordelia in danger. Even if Morwenna is not the next Supreme, she may possess exactly the power the coven needs at this moment.

Cordelia’s Powers Do Not Appear to Be Fading Yet
One of the strongest arguments against immediately declaring Morwenna the new Supreme is that Season 13 has not clearly shown Cordelia weakening in the traditional sense. Her problem in Episode 6 is not an obvious loss of magical ability. She remains powerful enough to confront threats and command the academy, but she is struggling to understand what is coming.
That is different from the succession pattern seen when one Supreme’s health and power decline as another begins to rise. Episode 6 instead suggests that Cordelia’s crisis is primarily about leadership. She wonders whether her compassionate approach has left the coven vulnerable and even considers whether she needs some of Fiona’s ruthlessness to survive what is ahead.
Her doubts therefore do not necessarily mean the Supremacy is transferring to Morwenna. They may simply show a leader confronting an enemy she cannot predict.
Morwenna May Be Important Even If She Is Not the Supreme
Morwenna’s role could ultimately be more interesting if the show avoids immediately making her Cordelia’s replacement. Season 13 has already established that Satan’s forces are assembling people with very specific purposes, while the witches appear to be experiencing their own supernatural response to the approaching conflict.
Cordelia believes magic is preparing the coven for battle. If she is correct, Morwenna’s Resurgence may have emerged because the witches will soon need someone capable of reversing losses rather than because the coven needs a new leader. Her power could therefore be part of the defense against the forces surrounding Mr. Nas.
For now, the most accurate answer is that Morwenna could eventually become a Supreme candidate, but Episode 6 does not prove that she is the next Supreme. What the episode does prove is that her power is advancing unusually fast, and American Horror Story rarely introduces an ability this specific immediately before a major cliffhanger without intending to use it again.
