American Horror Story: 13 delivers its biggest crossover episode so far with “The Return of Devil’s Night.” Episode 6 temporarily leaves Ben DeSoto and the Apollyon behind to connect Hotel and Coven, bringing James Patrick March back into the story just as Cordelia Goode becomes increasingly worried about the future of Miss Robichaux’s Academy. The two storylines eventually collide in a cliffhanger that puts one of the franchise’s most important witches in serious danger.

The episode reveals that March and the figures associated with Devil’s Night have been given a specific role in Satan’s larger plan. Their target is the coven, where younger witches are suddenly developing powers at a speed Cordelia considers unnatural. By the ending, March has entered Miss Robichaux’s and left Cordelia apparently lifeless, while the remaining 12 witches become his group’s next targets.

James March Returns on Devil’s Night

Evan Peters returns as James Patrick March, the Hotel Cortez founder who previously hosted gatherings of notorious figures during Devil’s Night. This time, March is not simply organizing another celebration because he has been given a mission connected to Satan’s plan. He reunites with Jeffrey Dahmer and gathers the other figures associated with the Hotel storyline before they travel toward New Orleans.

March makes it clear that the group has been returned for a purpose. Their role in the larger plan is to target witches, adding another group of returning characters to the network surrounding Nas and Satan. The episode therefore turns Devil’s Night from a Hotel callback into an active part of Season 13’s main storyline.

The Coven Notices Something Is Wrong

At Miss Robichaux’s Academy, Cordelia is already worried before March arrives. She has sensed darkness approaching since the beginning of the season, and the powers developing among the younger witches now convince her that something larger is happening. The changes are happening too quickly for her to dismiss them as normal magical growth.

Cordelia oversees a test involving Morwenna, who demonstrates the power of resurgence by restoring a dead toad to a younger and healthier state. The ease with which Morwenna performs the feat alarms Cordelia because such advanced abilities would normally take longer to develop. The Supreme begins to view the witches’ rapidly increasing power as another warning rather than a simple advantage.

Cordelia Worries About Her Leadership

Cordelia shares her concerns with Madison Montgomery and Queenie, admitting that she does not know how to protect the coven from a threat she cannot clearly see. Her usual abilities are not giving her enough information about what is coming, leaving her in the unusual position of knowing danger is near without knowing its form. That uncertainty begins to make her question whether her own leadership style is strong enough.

She worries that her compassion could become a weakness. Cordelia has spent years trying to lead differently from her mother Fiona, whose time as Supreme was defined by ambition and ruthless self-interest. Faced with a threat she cannot understand, Cordelia begins wondering whether Fiona’s darker instincts might actually be useful.

Why Do the Witches Try to Summon Fiona?

Cordelia decides that the coven needs Fiona’s guidance, so Madison gathers the witches for a ritual. There are exactly 13 witches present, continuing the numerical pattern that has appeared around Satan’s plans throughout Season 13. The group drinks absinthe and attempts to reach the former Supreme through a Ouija board.

At first, nothing happens, but the board eventually begins to move and spells out the word “Mother.” Cordelia interprets the message as a response from Fiona and sends the other witches upstairs because she wants to face her mother alone. The decision isolates her at precisely the moment the academy becomes vulnerable.

James March Arrives Instead of Fiona

The person who arrives is not Fiona but James Patrick March. He enters Miss Robichaux’s with his Devil’s Night companions, revealing that Satan’s forces have already reached the coven. Whether the Ouija message actually came from Fiona or was manipulated as part of March’s plan is not explained before the episode ends.

March’s group quickly overwhelms Cordelia and leaves her gravely injured. The sequence is deliberately abrupt, giving the Supreme almost no opportunity to mount the kind of magical defense viewers would normally expect from her. That suddenness makes the cliffhanger more effective but also leaves enough uncertainty for Cordelia’s fate to remain open.

Is Cordelia Goode Dead?

Episode 6 presents Cordelia as apparently dead, but it does not provide enough confirmation to conclude that she is permanently gone. She is left unresponsive after March and the others overwhelm her, and the episode cuts away before showing any recovery. Within an ordinary drama, the scene might look definitive, but American Horror Story: 13 has already spent six episodes repeatedly breaking the usual boundary between life and the afterlife.

American Horror Story Season 13 Episode 4

Adelaide has returned, Elizabeth Short has returned, Hotel characters are moving freely again, and Satan has brought historical figures back for rituals beneath the Apollyon. Cordelia therefore exists in a season where being apparently gone does not necessarily mean a character cannot return. More importantly, the episode introduces a possible solution immediately before the cliffhanger.

Morwenna May Be Able to Save Cordelia

Morwenna’s resurgence power suddenly becomes much more important after Cordelia is injured. The young witch demonstrates that she can restore a dead creature to life, and Cordelia herself is surprised by how powerful the ability has become. Introducing that power shortly before the attack strongly suggests that the episode wants viewers to consider whether Morwenna could use it on the Supreme.

The unanswered question is whether the ability works the same way on a person. American Horror Story has not yet established the limits of Morwenna’s resurgence, so Cordelia’s recovery cannot be treated as guaranteed. Still, the timing makes Morwenna the most obvious potential solution heading into the next episode.

Could Fiona Still Return?

Fiona’s possible involvement is also unresolved. Cordelia reaches out to her because she believes the coven may need someone willing to use methods that Cordelia herself has avoided. The Ouija board appears to answer with “Mother,” but March arrives before Cordelia receives any genuine guidance.

That leaves two possibilities. Fiona may actually have responded and could still become involved after realizing what has happened to her daughter, or the message may have been part of the trap that allowed March to isolate Cordelia. Either way, Episode 6 deliberately leaves Fiona hanging over the cliffhanger rather than closing the door on her return.

Why Are There 13 Witches?

The number of witches gathered at Miss Robichaux’s is unlikely to be accidental. There are exactly 13, matching the number required for the ritual beneath the Apollyon in Episode 4. Once Cordelia is targeted, 12 witches remain, and March makes it clear that his group has not finished its mission.

That structure suggests the coven may be another group required for Satan’s supernatural plan. Episode 4 needed 13 women to restore part of Nas’ strength, and Episode 6 places 13 witches together just as Satan’s followers arrive. Whether the witches are intended for another ritual or simply need to be removed as obstacles has not yet been explained.

Episode 6 Ending Explained: Who Can Save the Coven?

The episode ends with the coven in its most vulnerable position of the season. Cordelia is apparently gone, March and his Devil’s Night group have entered the academy, and 12 witches remain in immediate danger. At the same time, Morwenna has just demonstrated a power capable of restoring life, while Fiona may have responded to Cordelia’s attempt to reach her.

Those details make the cliffhanger less final than it first appears. Cordelia may still have a path back, and the younger witches may be considerably more powerful than March expects. Episode 6 therefore ends not with confirmation that the coven has lost its Supreme, but with a race to discover whether Morwenna, Fiona or the remaining witches can respond before Satan’s plan reaches its next stage.
