War moves from preparation to actual combat in Season 1 Episode 2, “No More Nasty Surprises,” as Carla Duval and Morgan Henderson sit down for mediation while their lawyers spend most of the process trying to discover what the other side knows. The polite language surrounding an “amicable” divorce lasts only as long as it needs to. Behind closed doors, Taylor & Byrne are searching for a way around the prenup, while Cathcarts & Sons are trying to work out exactly how much damage Morgan has done to his own position. Between those two firms sits Johnny Warren, beginning his first day at Taylor & Byrne while secretly feeding information to their opponents.
The episode cleverly gives both camps a moment when they believe they have won. Morgan makes an admission that could significantly strengthen Carla’s attempt to challenge the prenup, allowing Serena Byrne and Nicholas Taylor to dream of an enormous settlement. Yet Serena’s effort to contain the Flora Monroe problem creates an even more dangerous opening, and Johnny is perfectly positioned to exploit it. By the end of the mediation, both sides agree to arbitration, but only Cathcarts understands how dramatically the balance may have shifted.

Morgan Insists There Are No More Surprises
The episode opens with St. John Smallwood taking Morgan for a discreet walk and asking the question Cathcarts now considers essential. Flora’s involvement may look terrible if it becomes public, but there is no infidelity clause that automatically destroys the prenup. What worries St. John is the possibility that Morgan has withheld something else, so he repeatedly asks whether Flora was the only recent problem and whether Morgan intends to see her again. Morgan assures him that the matter is finished, which gives the episode title an irony that becomes increasingly obvious as the hour continues.
Meanwhile, Johnny arrives for his first real day at Taylor & Byrne. Nobody there knows that Cathcarts helped maneuver him into the job, and the firm’s confidence makes his position even more useful. Serena, Nicholas and Budgie are still trying to understand how Morgan managed to serve Carla first at her own premiere, with Serena increasingly suspicious that the explanation cannot simply be the photograph of Carla meeting her lawyers in Paris. Their immediate fear is Flora, because if Morgan has discovered that his encounter with her was arranged by Carla, their client’s position becomes considerably more complicated.
Both firms approach mediation with the same cynical understanding of the process. They have to look cooperative, but neither side expects three days of polite conversations to produce a genuinely friendly divorce settlement. Instead, mediation becomes an information-gathering exercise in which every sentence, reaction and financial figure can reveal what the opposition intends to do next. As Cathcarts dryly observes, there is effectively no such thing as an amicable outcome at this level of wealth.
Morgan Makes a Major Mistake About the Prenup
Carla and Morgan’s first mediation session is almost comically civilized. Morgan talks about the love that remains between them and claims they have simply grown apart, while Carla agrees that she wants the process handled openly and respectfully. Their mediator, Alanda Brown, quickly cuts through the performance and turns the conversation toward the real issue: the prenup that says each spouse should essentially leave with what they already have.
That agreement looked very different when Carla and Morgan signed it ten years earlier. Morgan’s company, Zephyr, already existed, but it was nowhere close to the business it has become. Carla reminds him of their early relationship, including conversations about his ambitions and the support she provided while he was trying to build something significant. Morgan then makes the admission his lawyers would have preferred him to avoid, acknowledging that his earnings have increased and that the couple now lives an entirely different life from the one they had when the prenup was signed.
Taylor & Byrne immediately recognizes the value of those words. Morgan has effectively placed on record that the circumstances surrounding the marriage have changed substantially, which gives Carla’s lawyers something concrete to use when arguing that the original financial arrangement should no longer determine the result. Their forensic work values Morgan’s Zephyr shares at around 700 million, meaning there is an enormous difference between the man Carla married and the man she is now divorcing. Serena and Nicholas suddenly believe that Morgan’s careless honesty may have opened the door they needed.
Morgan realizes he has another problem during the same session. From Carla’s expressions and carefully chosen remarks, he becomes convinced she knows about Flora. He tells Cathcarts to use their inside source to discover exactly what Taylor & Byrne knows, unknowingly turning Johnny’s first days at the firm into something much more consequential than routine junior-lawyer work.
Carla Rejects Morgan’s First Settlement Offer
The next stage of mediation takes place through separate rooms, with offers moving back and forth through Alanda. Morgan’s side initially offers Carla 17 million pounds, half of their assets apart from the Upper East Side apartment, and monthly payments of 40,000 pounds until Morgan reaches 60. Taylor & Byrne does not even immediately present the offer to Carla because Nicholas and Serena believe Cathcarts can be pushed much further.
When they finally counter, the distance between the two positions becomes obvious. Carla’s side asks for 195 million pounds, half of all assets including the New York property, and monthly payments of 50,000 pounds until Morgan turns 75. The enormous opening demand is partly negotiating theatre, and Taylor & Byrne privately calculates that a figure considerably below it could eventually settle the case. Later discussions suggest that something around the 80 to 85 million mark might be enough to prevent the dispute from moving into the much longer arbitration process.
Cathcarts seriously considers paying. Beatrice understands that Morgan is an unreliable client who has already made their work harder, while Taylor & Byrne currently has a stronger argument than they had at the beginning of mediation. Morgan is also warned about what happens if Serena is allowed to build Carla’s case over time. She can argue that Zephyr’s success was achieved during their marriage and portray Carla as the partner, supporter and emotional foundation who helped Morgan become the man now worth hundreds of millions.
For a brief period, the episode makes an early settlement look surprisingly possible. Cathcarts prepares an offer of 85 million, while Taylor & Byrne believes it can extract enough money to call mediation a victory. Then Flora’s mother walks into Taylor & Byrne’s reception, and the entire calculation changes.
Why Does Flora’s Mother Demand 20,000?
Serena has already visited Flora at home because she wants her to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Serena presents the NDA as protection for Flora as much as Carla, arguing that it will prevent anyone from pressuring her into discussing what happened with Morgan. Flora is uncomfortable with the implication that Carla suddenly does not trust her, particularly because she still regards Carla as a friend and insists that she understood what she was doing when she met Morgan.
The bigger complication is Flora’s mother, Melinda “Mumsy” Monroe. Mumsy believes her daughter was used by wealthy people who now want to make their problem disappear, and she decides Flora should receive something in return. She arrives at Taylor & Byrne and announces that Flora will not sign anything unless she receives 20,000, adding that otherwise the story could go to the press.
Johnny happens to be in exactly the right place when Mumsy leaves. He chases after her, learns what she wants and, crucially, sends the information to Cathcarts before Taylor & Byrne understands what has happened. Morgan’s lawyers immediately see what the demand implies. If Taylor & Byrne wants Flora silenced badly enough to compensate her, then Carla’s lawyers clearly know much more about the original encounter than Cathcarts had previously been able to prove.
That allows Cathcarts to make the final connection. Flora did not simply meet Morgan by chance. Carla arranged the encounter as a test, which means Cathcarts can characterize the entire episode as a deliberately engineered scheme rather than evidence that accidentally came into Carla’s possession. Suddenly, Morgan’s team has a potential way to undermine the clean story Taylor & Byrne wants to present.
Johnny Tricks Taylor & Byrne Over Flora’s NDA
Johnny does not immediately reveal to his new colleagues that Cathcarts already knows about Mumsy’s demand. Instead, he plays the helpful junior associate who happened to intercept a difficult situation. He tells Serena, Nicholas and Carla that Mumsy wants 20,000 and suggests she appears determined enough to cause trouble if they refuse.
Carla insists this does not sound like Flora, but the lawyers decide the safest option is to resolve the problem. More importantly, they explain the entire honey trap to Johnny themselves. He learns directly from them that Carla sent Flora to test Morgan and that everyone now regards the decision as a mistake. Serena then entrusts Johnny with solving the NDA problem, unaware that she has effectively handed Cathcarts exactly the access they wanted.
Flora herself does not want to be paid for what happened, creating another difficulty. Johnny therefore proposes an indirect arrangement in which equivalent value can reach Mumsy without Taylor & Byrne appearing simply to purchase Flora’s silence. The episode draws attention to the Monroe family’s leaking conservatory while Johnny searches for an alternative route, after which he reports back to Serena that the problem has been handled and Flora has signed the NDA.
That apparent success is actually the trap. Cathcarts obtains a recording of Johnny confirming to Serena that Flora received the agreed benefit and signed the NDA as instructed. Taylor & Byrne thinks Johnny has cleaned up Carla’s most embarrassing mistake. From Cathcarts’ perspective, he has instead helped create evidence linking Carla’s legal team to an attempt to secure Flora’s silence after an encounter they already know Carla arranged.
War Episode 2 Ending Explained: Why Do Carla and Morgan Choose Arbitration?
By the third and final mediation session, Taylor & Byrne is unusually confident. Serena believes Flora’s NDA problem has been contained and tells Carla they can enter arbitration with the stronger case. Morgan’s admission about his changed financial circumstances remains valuable, and the firm believes it can eventually secure far more than the settlement Cathcarts was initially offering.
Cathcarts has a completely different reason for abandoning settlement. Only a short time earlier, Morgan’s lawyers were prepared to put a much larger number on the table to make the divorce disappear. Johnny’s information changes their strategy. They now know about the honey trap, Mumsy’s demand and Taylor & Byrne’s response, giving them a vulnerability they believe can be used against Carla once the dispute becomes more formal.
That is why Cathcarts suddenly stops mediation just as an agreement begins to look achievable. In the final session, Alanda warns Carla and Morgan that arbitration will take longer, cost more and place a greater emotional burden on both of them. Neither backs down. Morgan says he wants arbitration, and Carla agrees, each believing their side has obtained the decisive advantage.
The irony is that Carla has no idea Johnny is the reason Cathcarts feels safe walking away. Taylor & Byrne sees him as the junior associate who solved the Flora problem, while Cathcarts sees him as the person who turned that attempted cleanup into leverage. Johnny is no longer merely passing along office gossip. Episode 2 demonstrates that he can actively shape Taylor & Byrne’s decisions while making those decisions useful to Morgan’s lawyers.
There is one last complication. After Morgan has assured St. John that Flora is firmly in the past, the episode’s final visual beat shows Flora contacting Morgan and asking to see him again. Her motive is not yet explained, so it would be premature to assume she is helping Carla or trying to restart anything with Morgan. What matters is that the one person both legal teams are desperately trying to contain has just reopened direct contact with the man at the center of the case.
That final message gives the title, “No More Nasty Surprises,” its payoff. Morgan promised there would be nothing else coming, Taylor & Byrne believed the NDA had neutralized Flora, and both firms ended mediation thinking they understood their risks. Flora’s return immediately proves otherwise. Arbitration is coming, Johnny remains embedded inside Carla’s team, and the person who started this entire divorce battle may now be capable of disrupting both sides.
