David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street begins with an aggressively ordinary American neighborhood. Then a mysterious cosmic event tears Oak Street away from…
There is something immediately unsettling about a house refusing to behave like a house. In Netflix’s The Last House, a suburban family’s safest space abruptly becomes a prison. Jason and Ann wake to find every normal route outside useless, the doors will not open, the windows cannot be broken, and the strange rain falling across…
Evil Dead Burn does not need a sprawling map of locations to make its world frightening. Ted heads back to England to manage Richmond’s second-division women’s…

The Shards arrives dressed like a glossy 1980s teen drama, but the polished convertibles, expensive houses and private-school uniforms conceal a much nastier story. Adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ semi-autobiographical 2023 novel, the FX series follows a fictionalized teenage Bret during his final year at an elite Los Angeles school. His controlled social circle begins…
Solo Mio makes a clever bargain with its audience. Matt Taylor’s romantic catastrophe is invented, but the Italy surrounding him is very real. The churches, cafe tables, public gardens and Tuscan countryside were not recreated on a Los Angeles soundstage. Kevin James and the Kinnane brothers took the production to Rome, then allowed the city…
