The Challenge has always understood that scenery is most useful when it can also make the contestants miserable. Season 42, titled The Challenge: Cutthroat, doubles down on that principle. Twenty-four veterans and newcomers are split into three teams, but collective survival comes with an individual temptation: the winning captain controls how the $500,000 prize is divided. Paramount+ premiered the season on August 5, 2026, reviving the Cutthroat format last used in 2010.

For this return, the series moved to Thailand. The full season was filmed in the country, with confirmed production work in Bangkok, Pattaya and other parts of Chon Buri Province. That route takes the competition from crowded city environments and rooftops to the coast, giving Cutthroat a broader visual identity than a season confined to one remote compound.

Thailand Hosts Season 42

Thailand is not being used as an anonymous tropical stand-in. The Tourism Authority of Thailand worked with the production, and its official announcement describes the country as central to the season’s setting. Urban locations, coastal scenery and outdoor landscapes were all used rather than limiting filming to a private residence and a few interchangeable challenge fields.

The choice also makes practical sense. The Challenge needs controlled spaces for large rigs and eliminations, but it also needs recognizable scenery that keeps each season from resembling the last. Bangkok and Thailand’s eastern seaboard supplied both within one production region.

Bangkok Brings the City Scale

Bangkok supplies the metropolitan side of Cutthroat. Host T.J. Lavin said one of the shoot’s most memorable moments took place on top of a Bangkok building at sunset, overlooking the city’s “concrete jungle.” The building has not been named, but his account confirms the skyline was more than stock establishing footage. The crew filmed at rooftop level in the capital.

That urban setting gives the season height, hard surfaces and a sense of exposure that secluded compounds cannot provide. It also creates a sharp contrast with the water-based and outdoor environments elsewhere in Thailand.

No primary source has identified the Giant Swing, Wat Arun, Victory Monument, Baiyoke Tower II or other famous landmarks as specific shooting sites. They may appear in skyline material, but presenting them as confirmed locations would go beyond what Paramount+ and TAT have released. At present, the unnamed rooftop is the most specifically described Bangkok setup.

Pattaya Adds the Coast

Pattaya provides the season’s coastal personality. The resort city lies within Chon Buri Province on Thailand’s eastern seaboard, and both TAT and Lavin singled it out as a major filming destination. Lavin had visited Thailand previously, but said this production was his first chance to spend meaningful time in Bangkok and Pattaya.

The exact beaches, piers and waterfront properties used on screen have not been disclosed. What is confirmed is that Pattaya’s coastline, beaches and nearby ocean environments helped frame the competition. Those surroundings suit a franchise that routinely stages swimming tests, suspended platforms, boat sequences and large structures over water, although the producers have not yet assigned individual challenges to named Pattaya sites.

The coast also behaves like an obstacle. Lavin said Thailand’s heat could rapidly drain competitors who failed to remain hydrated. On a travel show, Pattaya’s shore promises escape. On The Challenge, the sun, humidity and open water increase the cost of every sprint, climb and team carry.

Chon Buri Holds the Big Builds

Official descriptions repeatedly separate Pattaya from “locations throughout Chon Buri,” showing that filming moved beyond the city into the wider province. TAT has not released the individual districts or addresses, so the precise outdoor sites remain private.

The wider province would give production more room for cranes, safety teams, cameras and oversized challenge constructions than central Bangkok. That is an inference rather than a confirmed scene map, but it fits TAT’s description of coastal scenery and outdoor landscapes across the eastern seaboard.

Pattaya should therefore not be counted as a separate province. The accurate production summary is Bangkok, Pattaya, and additional undisclosed locations elsewhere in Chon Buri Province.

The Challenge House Is Still Private

Paramount+ and the Thai tourism authorities have not published the address of the cast residence, the elimination arena or the main challenge compound. TAT initially said more detailed locations would be announced later, but the available production information currently stops at city and province level.

Villas circulating online should not automatically be labeled the official Cutthroat house. It is a working production site, not necessarily a visitor attraction, and television interiors may be altered enough to make visual matching unreliable. Until the producers or a property owner confirms the venue, the safest description is a private compound within the season’s confirmed Bangkok-Chon Buri production corridor.

The same caution applies to elimination locations. The trailer reveals heavily constructed arenas and outdoor courses, but their designs do not necessarily expose the real properties underneath. Production teams frequently transform open land, industrial spaces and private grounds with temporary platforms, lighting towers and scenic walls.

When Did Cutthroat Film?

Filming began in late February 2026. Adrienne Naylor was reported flying to Thailand on February 20, while a February 24 report said production was already underway and expected to run for seven weeks. Fan tracking placed the wrap around April 11, although Paramount+ has not published formal start and finish dates. The most defensible filming window is late February through early April 2026.

That timing helps explain the conditions Lavin described. The production worked as Thailand moved toward its hottest period, making heat management part of rehearsals, recovery and competition itself. The climate was not simply visible in the background. It affected the game.

For contestants, that creates a different problem from cold-water seasons or high-altitude finals. Heat exhaustion can punish a team before strength or strategy becomes decisive, particularly when players are carrying heavy objects, running repeated stages or waiting under the sun while another team finishes.

Were Phi Phi or Krabi Used?

Some promotional travel coverage mentions the Andaman Sea and the Phi Phi Islands, but neither should currently be listed as a confirmed Season 42 location. Lavin explained that his scuba-diving experience around Phi Phi came from earlier trips, not this production. His time during the Cutthroat shoot centered on Bangkok, Pattaya, night markets and scooter rides.

There is no reliable evidence so far that the season filmed in Krabi, Phuket or the Phi Phi Islands. The verified production map remains on the other side of the country, in Bangkok and around the Gulf-facing eastern seaboard of Pattaya and Chon Buri.

This distinction is important because a host discussing a favorite destination does not automatically make that place a filming site. Until an episode, production credit or official location announcement connects the Andaman coast to Season 42, it should remain outside the confirmed list.

Bangkok gives Cutthroat height and urban pressure. Pattaya opens the competition toward the sea. The wider Chon Buri region supplies the space required for major constructions and physically demanding outdoor tests.

More importantly, Thailand refuses to sit quietly behind the cast. Its heat exhausts them, its city scale makes them look small, and its coastline turns postcard scenery into an arena. Season 42 revives an old format, but its filming locations make this version of Cutthroat feel like a genuinely new game.
