The Shards Filming Locations and Cast Details

The Shards arrives dressed like a glossy 1980s teen drama, but the polished convertibles, expensive houses and private-school uniforms conceal a much nastier story. Adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ semi-autobiographical 2023 novel, the FX series follows a fictionalized teenage Bret during his final year at an elite Los Angeles school. His controlled social circle begins to fracture when Robert Mallory, a magnetic transfer student with a suspicious past, walks into it. Meanwhile, a serial killer known as the Trawler is targeting young people across the city.

Ryan Murphy serves as writer, director and executive producer, while Ellis is also an executive producer. Rather than sending the production to a cheaper stand-in city, the team filmed throughout Los Angeles, using surviving landmarks and carefully redressed contemporary locations to rebuild the city as it appeared in 1981.

Where was The Shards Filmed?

Principal photography took place across greater Los Angeles, allowing the series to use the actual geography that shaped Ellis’ story. The production moved between Eagle Rock, Westwood, Redondo Beach, the Pacific Coast Highway and residential areas associated with the city’s wealthy western neighborhoods.

That decision matters because Los Angeles is more than scenery in The Shards. Bret and his friends live in a city built around distance, isolation and carefully maintained appearances. Their mansions and school corridors may look inviting, but everyone appears to be hiding in plain sight. Recreating that atmosphere in the real city gives the show a specificity that a generic California backlot would have struggled to provide.

Occidental College as Buckley Prep

Occidental College at 1600 Campus Road in Eagle Rock supplied the main setting for Buckley Prep, the exclusive school attended by Bret, Robert, Susan, Debbie and Thom.

The production did not film at the actual Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, which Bret Easton Ellis attended. Instead, Occidental’s Spanish Colonial Revival buildings, landscaped courtyards and enclosed campus walkways were used to create the fictionalized version seen in the series. The college has hosted film and television productions for decades, making it especially practical for a large period shoot requiring control over entrances, walkways and background activity.

Occidental is a convincing substitute because Buckley must look affluent without feeling warm. Its orderly architecture reflects the protected world these teenagers believe they occupy. Of course, the arrival of Robert and the growing Trawler investigation quickly prove that the gates are not protecting anyone.

Westwood Village Returns to 1981

Westwood Village was another prominent filming area. Production activity was documented around Broxton and Weyburn avenues in October 2025, with the neighborhood’s historic movie theaters and surrounding storefronts temporarily dressed to resemble their early-1980s counterparts.

The Fox Westwood, now commonly known as the Regency Village Theatre, and the nearby Bruin Theatre were both photographed with period alterations during the shoot. Vintage signage, altered marquees and era-appropriate storefront details helped remove several decades of modern development from the frame.

Westwood was a smart choice. Its theater district already carries traces of old Hollywood, so the production did not need to manufacture the area’s identity from scratch. It merely had to hide the smartphones, contemporary cars and increasingly unavoidable chain-store branding. No small assignment in modern Los Angeles.

South Bay Galleria

The South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach reportedly doubled for the Sherman Oaks Galleria, the famous San Fernando Valley shopping center closely associated with 1980s youth culture.

The current Sherman Oaks Galleria has changed considerably since the period depicted in the series. South Bay Galleria offered a more suitable physical framework, allowing the designers to recreate the enclosed mall environment where teenagers could shop, flirt, gossip and quietly watch one another.

The substitution also fits the show’s larger location strategy. Instead of insisting on every literal address from the novel, the production selected Los Angeles spaces that could still communicate how those locations felt in 1981.

Pacific Coast Highway

Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere were seen filming driving scenes along the Pacific Coast Highway in January 2026. The coastal road provides the kind of sunlit freedom associated with California youth, although The Shards rarely allows that freedom to remain uncomplicated for long.

Additional filming took place around Los Angeles for private residences, parties, streets and nightlife sequences. The story’s affluent characters are connected to Bel-Air, Beverly Hills, Sherman Oaks and the Hollywood film industry, but exact addresses for the houses used in the series have not been publicly confirmed. It is better to leave those properties unidentified than turn an educated guess into a fake filming location.

When Was The Shards Filmed?

Production databases commonly place the main filming period between November 2025 and March 2026. However, documented location preparation and filming activity in Westwood and at Occidental College shows that work was already underway by October 2025.

The practical answer is that the Los Angeles shoot ran from fall 2025 into early spring 2026. Filming was completed in time for FX to reveal its first official images in June and release the full trailer in July.

The Shards Cast

Igby Rigney leads the series as Bret Easton Ellis, an ambitious young writer whose fascination with Robert gradually turns into suspicion and obsession. Homer Gere plays Robert Mallory, the secretive new student who inserts himself into Bret’s tightly guarded circle.

Kaia Gerber stars as Susan Reynolds, the school’s seemingly perfect popular girl. Hayes Warner plays Debbie Schaffer, who is desperate to escape the expectations surrounding her, while Graham Campbell appears as confident golden boy Thom Wright.

The adult cast includes Evan Rachel Wood as Debbie’s mother, Liz Schaffer, and Wes Bentley as her wealthy and unsettling father, Terry. Jordan Roth plays Steven Reinhardt, Terry’s enigmatic assistant and a man who appears to know how every secret can be turned into leverage.

The Shards Release Date

The Shards premieres in the United States on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, on FX and Hulu. Hulu’s official August schedule lists the series on the same date, so viewers do not have to wait until the following day for streaming access.

The series reaches Disney+ in the United Kingdom and Australia on August 6. Its Los Angeles locations should be immediately recognizable, although the production’s real achievement is making familiar parts of the city feel seductive, sealed-off and quietly dangerous again. In The Shards, the sunshine is genuine. The safety is not.
