Furious is sold as a cat-and-mouse thriller, but its most combustible slow-burn relationship belongs to Alice Black and Danny Kelly. Alice, played by Emmy Rossum, is rebuilding her career after leaving the NYPD, while Scoot McNairy’s Danny remains the former partner who cannot decide whether supporting her means listening or intervening. Official character details describe Alice as a former homicide detective starting at the bottom of the FBI and Danny as deeply loyal, even when he would never admit it. Episode 4, “Flash Flood,” sends them to a group home outside Albany and traps them together on the rain-lashed drive back. Danny finally admits that his feelings for Alice are consuming him. He just cannot bring himself to call those feelings love.
Furious Episode 4 spoilers ahead.
Do Alice and Danny get together in Episode 4?
No. Alice and Danny do not officially become a couple in Episode 4.
Danny tells Alice that the way he feels about her is a nightmare and a “black hole.” Alice asks him to say what that feeling is, but he retreats, gets out to smoke in the storm and never gives it a name. Their argument collapses into breathless laughter, leaving them emotionally closer without creating a relationship. The scene breaks their denial. It does not settle their future.
What happens in the car confession?
The conversation takes place during the return trip from Isabel Luna’s former group home in upstate New York. A flash flood has made the road dangerous, and the pair are stuck together with nowhere else to direct their anger.
Danny asks whether Alice lied when she said she once lived in a similar home. She admits that she ran away for several months at 14 and that her father would not let her return. She begins to explain that she was in love with someone, then stops.
Danny offers a painful disclosure of his own. The opening shows him visiting Liam at a care facility and saying that he loves him. In the car, Danny says Liam was placed in a residential home after becoming difficult to manage as he grew older.
The episode still withholds the full family relationship, so it would be premature to identify Liam more specifically. What matters in this scene is that Danny finally offers Alice a piece of his own pain instead of asking her to expose more of hers.
For once, they are not solving each other. They are simply telling the truth.
Why does Alice reject Danny’s help?
Alice has a bruised face after an encounter with a man she met online. She tells Danny that she asked to be hurt and that the experience makes her happy while it is happening. Danny tries to understand, but Alice hears the old rescue impulse underneath his questions.
Her objection is not that he cares. It is that his care can become a judgment about which version of her is acceptable. She tells him she does not need praise and does not want him continually trying to save her.
Rossum has described the relationship in similar terms, explaining that Danny wants to be a hero while Alice resists being rescued.
That is the obstacle between them. Danny’s instinct is protection. Alice experiences protection as another person trying to take control.

What does Danny mean by “black hole”?
The phrase is an admission of love without the comfort of saying “I love you.”
Danny’s feelings have their own gravity. They pull him toward Alice, make him furious when she is hurt and leave him unable to step back even when she rejects his help. Yet those feelings are tangled with fear, guilt and a need to fix what cannot be fixed for her.
He is not saying that Alice ruins his life. He is admitting that loving her feels endless and frightening. The relationship cannot work until he learns to care without becoming her rescuer.
That is also why he refuses to answer when Alice asks what he feels. Saying “love” would make the relationship real, and Danny is not ready to face what loving Alice might require from him.
Does Alice love Danny?
Alice never says it, but Episode 4 makes mutual feeling difficult to deny.
She called Danny after the encounter that left her bruised and is hurt that he did not answer. When he finally exposes the depth of his attachment, she does not deflect. She asks him to define it.
Later, they anticipate each other’s thoughts while working the Catherine lead and laugh at how naturally they still function as partners. That easy rhythm matters. Their history has been damaged by Alice’s relationship with Marshall, the hostility she faced after reporting him and Danny’s inability to understand every part of her recovery. It has not erased their connection.
The rain-soaked scene may invite debate about how physically close they come, but the episode gives them no couple label and no clear romantic agreement. That restraint is sensible. A sudden, triumphant kiss would undercut the boundary Alice has just set.
Where do Alice and Danny stand now?
They are not together, but they can no longer pretend this is only friendship or professional loyalty.
Danny must learn that loving Alice does not give him authority over her choices. Alice must decide whether she can accept closeness without reading it as control. Until then, the “black hole” is not a romantic promise. It is a warning about how easily their feelings could swallow the relationship before it begins.
Episode 4 does not complete the romance. It makes the romance unavoidable.
