“Aussie at Heart” gives its second-chance romance a setting built around the water. Rhiannon Fish stars as Samara Hart, a former attorney who has reinvented herself as an event planner after a professional disaster derailed her legal career. Her newest assignment sounds like exactly the sort of opportunity that could restore her confidence: organize a…
Rather than rebuilding one of the Cold War’s most famous diplomatic meetings on a Hollywood soundstage, “The Brink of War” puts its actors inside the room where history actually happened. Michael Russell Gunn’s political drama revisits the tense 1986 Reykjavik Summit, when U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Iceland to…
Few movies have made paradise look quite as threatening as The Shallows. Jaume Collet-Serra’s stripped-down 2016 survival thriller follows Nancy Adams, played by Blake Lively, as she travels to an unnamed beach in Mexico that held special meaning for her late mother. What begins as a solitary surfing trip becomes a brutal fight for survival…
Umthetho takes a familiar family conflict and places it inside one of the most unforgiving environments imaginable. Netflix’s My Brilliant Career returns to Miles Franklin’s celebrated story without trying to recreate Gillian Armstrong’s 1979 film shot for shot. Developed and written by Liz Doran, the six-part series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a fiercely independent young woman living in Australia around the turn of the 20th century. Sybylla wants to become a writer, even…
Don’t Say Good Luck gives the familiar high-school musical story a considerably heavier burden to carry. Sunny Sandler stars as Sophie Birenbaum, a 15-year-old theater kid who unexpectedly wins the lead role of Jenna in her school’s production of Waitress. Her biggest artistic opportunity arrives almost simultaneously with devastating news: her mother Elizabeth’s cancer has…
The Insidious franchise is leaving the Lambert family behind, but it certainly has not finished with The Further. Directed by Jacob Chase, Insidious: Out of the Further introduces Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, a young mother raising her daughter in the house where she grew up. Gemma discovers that she can enter The Further, the…
Olivia Wilde’s The Invite turns an ordinary dinner invitation into an increasingly uncomfortable examination of marriage, sex and the private resentments couples learn to hide. Seth Rogen and Wilde play Joe and Angela, a San Francisco couple whose relationship has settled into near-constant friction, while Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton play their seemingly more adventurous…
Getting a beloved 1990s boy band back together sounds like a strong television stunt. For Kaitlin Thompson, it is also the idea that could finally earn her a promotion. Hallmark’s Absolutely Devoted to You follows the ambitious morning-show producer as she tries to reunite the fictional group Absolutely Yeah! for a summer beach event. Three…
Anthony Bourdain eventually became a chef, writer and traveler who seemed incapable of staying in one place for long, but Tony is interested in the period before all of that. Matt Johnson’s A24 film follows a 19-year-old Bourdain during a formative summer in Provincetown, when he arrives on Cape Cod without much direction and stumbles…
2 Hearts looks, at first, like two separate romances unfolding at different points in time. College freshman Chris meets Sam and begins imagining a future he had not expected, while years earlier, Jorge, a Cuban exile living with a serious lung condition, falls for flight attendant Leslie. Lance Hool’s romantic drama gradually reveals why those…
HBO’s Lanterns takes one of DC’s most cosmic concepts and deliberately brings it down to Earth. Instead of beginning with enormous intergalactic battles, the eight-episode series pairs veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan with newly recruited John Stewart and drops them into an investigation surrounding a murder in America’s heartland. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead…
