HBO’s Lanterns takes one of DC’s most cosmic concepts and deliberately brings it down to Earth. Instead of beginning with enormous intergalactic battles, the eight-episode series pairs veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan with newly recruited John Stewart and drops them into an investigation surrounding a murder in America’s heartland. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead the series, which blends superhero mythology with the rhythms of a police mystery. Lanterns premieres August 16, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
That grounded approach extends directly to the filming. Although much of the story unfolds in rural Nebraska, the production never had to leave California to create it. Cameras rolled around Los Angeles, at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank and, most importantly, in the small Ventura County community of Piru, whose historic center was extensively transformed for the series. Production ran from February to July 2025 under the working title Latitude.
Filming Locations
Piru Becomes Rural Nebraska
Piru is arguably the most important real-world location in Lanterns. Sitting in the Santa Clara River Valley northwest of Los Angeles, the small community already has the low-rise buildings, broad streets, agricultural surroundings and hills that allow it to pass convincingly for a remote Midwestern town.

The production did considerably more than arrive for a few exterior shots. HBO worked in Piru over several months, constructing and dressing buildings before repeatedly returning to film there. The Piru Neighborhood Council’s production calendar documented extensive activity connected with Latitude, while a June 2025 notice explicitly identified the project filming in town as HBO Max’s Lanterns.
That makes Piru particularly valuable to the show’s visual identity. Lanterns needs somewhere that feels distant from Metropolis-style superhero spectacle. The unhurried streets and surrounding agricultural land give Hal and John a believable place in which to conduct an old-fashioned murder investigation before the case begins revealing its larger cosmic implications.
Center Street Is the Main Set
Ventura County permits reveal how extensively the filmmakers used Center Street in Piru. Filming in late March and early April 2025 covered numerous properties along the street, including addresses around 3940, 3950, 3956, 3962, 3969, 3979, 3981, 3989, 3997, 4005-4007 and 4072 Center Street. Production activity also extended to 665 Piru Square, 3972 Market Street and a gravel lot at Via Fustero and Center Street.
The first major block ran from March 27 through April 2, followed by additional filming on April 22, 23 and 24. Some locations were dressed and dismantled over several days between shoots, showing how thoroughly the production department reshaped the town rather than simply photographing it as found.

Not every address listed on a permit necessarily appears clearly in the finished series. Film permits can also cover holding areas, equipment positions and spaces required for logistical control. What they establish beyond doubt is that the fictional Nebraska community seen in Lanterns was built across a substantial section of real downtown Piru.

Main Street and Night Filming
Piru remained active later in the shoot. On June 4, the Piru Neighborhood Council reported a nighttime street closure at the intersection of Main Street and Center Street specifically for Lanterns. California Highway Patrol officers helped control the area while production worked around residents and businesses.
That extended relationship with the community allowed the filmmakers to return to the same streets instead of creating an inconsistent fictional town from scattered California locations. It is the sort of detail that should help Lanterns feel more like a crime drama with an actual geographical center than a superhero series jumping between anonymous exterior sets.

Fillmore Also Hosted Production
The same Ventura County permit includes filming activity outside Piru at 3741 East Telegraph Road and 5164 East Telegraph Road in Fillmore, immediately west of the community.
The production has not publicly identified exactly which scenes correspond to those properties, so assigning them to a particular ranch, home or business would be speculation. Their inclusion does, however, show that the rural landscape surrounding Piru was part of the production footprint, giving the series access to roads and open country that could extend its fictional Nebraska setting beyond the town center.

Warner Bros. Studios Burbank
When the story required environments that could not practically be created on location, Lanterns returned to Warner Bros. Studios at 4000 Warner Boulevard in Burbank. Warner Bros. Studios has itself confirmed that the series filmed on its stages, while reports from February 2025 documented production underway on the historic lot.
Studio filming was particularly useful for a project balancing a realistic murder investigation with Green Lantern powers, alien characters and visual-effects work. Controlled stages allow lighting, walls and camera positions to be altered while leaving room for effects equipment that would be difficult to accommodate inside a practical small-town building.
The Burbank shoot also represented a deliberate production decision. Lanterns had previously been expected to film in Atlanta, but DC Studios ultimately secured incentives and studio arrangements that kept the series in Southern California. Peter Safran publicly highlighted the importance of shooting locally, particularly after the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires affected film-industry workers and communities.

Los Angeles Area Filming
IMDb additionally credits Los Angeles and Burbank generally among the series’ locations. Principal photography began in the Los Angeles region in February 2025 before the larger Piru exterior work became visible in March.
There have also been reports connecting production activity under the Latitude working title with other Southern California properties. However, many of those claims remain based on local sightings rather than production confirmation. Piru, Fillmore, Los Angeles and Warner Bros. Studios are the strongest publicly documented locations, so attaching every rumored school or rural road to a specific Lanterns scene would go beyond the available evidence.
When Was Lanterns Filmed?
Production databases list the overall filming period as February 10 to July 15, 2025, while HBO formally announced that production was underway later in February. By July, reports indicated the principal shoot had wrapped.
The lengthy Piru schedule helps explain why the town feels less like an occasional backdrop and more like a genuine environment. Sets were prepared, photographed, altered and revisited over weeks rather than assembled for a single day’s work.
