Alma Lancaster is supposed to be following the respectable future her family has chosen for her, but she is secretly pursuing filmmaking when she meets Vadim Arcadi, the rebellious student she is forced to work with. Director Manon Gaurin gives that relationship a distinctly sunlit backdrop, with beaches, Mediterranean streets and polished interiors sitting alongside the characters’ student life. Although Emma Green’s original novel begins at a Los Angeles film school, the screen adaptation found its physical world much closer to home.

Where was You+Me – Against the World filmed?

You+Me – Against the World was filmed in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region of southern France. Production records identify Saint-Tropez and its surrounding area together with Carqueiranne in the Var as principal filming territory. The shoot took place during August and September 2025, roughly a year before the film’s Prime Video release.

That makes the production geography noticeably different from the source material. Emma Green’s novel places Alma and Vadim’s first meeting at a film school in Los Angeles, while Prime Video’s official movie synopsis simply describes the pair meeting “on campus” without specifying Los Angeles. The confirmed French shoot therefore suggests that Gaurin’s adaptation either reworks the setting or uses the Mediterranean coast to create its own version of the novel’s youthful, affluent environment.

Saint-Tropez and the surrounding coast

Saint-Tropez and its surrounding communities formed one of the movie’s principal location bases. Crew United’s production listing specifically identifies Saint-Tropez et environs, meaning the shoot was not limited to the famous port town itself but spread into the wider area. That approach makes practical sense for a romance that needs everything from upscale surroundings to open coastal landscapes without making every exterior instantly recognizable as one tourist landmark.

The choice also gives You+Me a visual identity that separates it from the many campus romances built around enclosed university buildings. Alma wants to make films and Vadim represents a life less controlled by convention, so the Mediterranean setting provides the story with a broader, more mobile backdrop. Public production records have not yet identified individual Saint-Tropez streets, houses or beaches used for specific scenes, so attaching exact moments from the trailer to particular properties would be speculation.

Carqueiranne was another major filming location

Carqueiranne, a coastal commune in the Var near Toulon, is one of the most firmly confirmed locations. The Toulon Provence Mediterranee film office announced that several scenes were shot within the commune and highlighted the movie as one of the productions filmed in its territory. Carqueiranne’s waterfront and Mediterranean surroundings fit naturally with the coastal imagery already used to market Alma and Vadim’s relationship.

Unlike Saint-Tropez, which carries an immediate association with luxury and celebrity, Carqueiranne offers a quieter Riviera environment. That gives a production more flexibility when it needs attractive coastal scenery without constantly reminding the audience of a famous real-world destination. The film office has confirmed the municipality but has not published a detailed scene-by-scene location breakdown, so the precise Carqueiranne sites should become easier to identify once the complete movie is available.

Part of the movie was shot at Provence Studios

Not everything in You+Me – Against the World was captured on location. Provence Studios has confirmed that part of the production was filmed on its stages in Martigues, west of Marseille. The studio complex covers roughly 22 hectares and provides both production facilities and a range of controlled environments, allowing the filmmakers to combine Riviera location work with interiors and other scenes that were easier to manage on a closed set.

Provence Studios described You+Me as a project that was both developed and filmed in France’s Region Sud. The studio has not disclosed which specific sequences were constructed there, so it would be premature to label Alma’s home, the college interiors or any other individual set as a Provence Studios build. What can be confirmed is that the production did not simply travel through southern France for exterior photography, but made the region its broader filmmaking base.

Southern France gives the adaptation its own identity

Filming the story in Provence is an interesting change for material so closely associated with Los Angeles on the page. Green’s novel uses a Los Angeles film school to bring the privileged Franco-English Alma together with Vadim, an American student of Russian heritage. Gaurin’s movie retains the film-project setup but has been produced as Prime Video’s first French Young Adult Original film, making the decision to root the production in France feel less like a compromise and more like part of the adaptation’s new identity.

The result is a production built largely around one region rather than a collection of disconnected doubles. Saint-Tropez and the wider Var provide the Mediterranean exteriors, Carqueiranne supplies additional coastal locations, and Provence Studios handles part of the controlled production work. For a romance about two young filmmakers whose attraction keeps disrupting the futures planned for them, the southern French setting gives You+Me – Against the World a more distinctive look than another conventional American-campus backdrop.
