Prime Video’s You+Me – Against the World, originally titled Toi+Moi – Seuls contre tous, turns a college romance into a story about how difficult it can be to choose your own future when family, money and dangerous obligations are making those decisions for you. Vittoria Di Savoia stars as Alma Lancaster, an aspiring filmmaker secretly studying cinema while her wealthy family believes she is preparing for law, while Lucas Barski plays Vadim Arcadi, the troubled student she is paired with for a film project. Directed by Manon Gaurin, the September 18, 2026 Prime Video release adapts Emma Green’s bestselling French literary series, which has sold nearly one million copies in France.

Alma and Vadim’s initial dislike gradually turns into love, but their relationship exposes secrets both have been trying to keep hidden. Alma is lying to her father Edward about studying law, while Vadim and his friend Felix remain trapped under the control of Oscar Johnson, the man who presents himself as their youth counselor while using them in his illegal operation. By the finale, Oscar has decided that Alma represents a threat to his hold over Vadim, forcing the couple into a situation where staying together could cost Vadim his freedom.

Who Is Stalking Alma?

Oscar is behind the anonymous campaign targeting Alma. His interest in her is not romantic, nor is he simply trying to frighten Vadim for personal amusement. Oscar understands that Alma gives Vadim something he has not had before: a reason to imagine a life beyond the one Oscar has created for him.

Vadim eventually tells Alma that Oscar’s public role as a youth counselor hides the real nature of their relationship. Oscar helped Vadim and Felix when they were vulnerable after the foster-care system, but that support developed into control, with both young men pressured into dealing drugs for him. Whenever Vadim begins moving toward independence, Oscar reminds him how much influence he still has over his life.

Clémentine, or Clem, becomes unintentionally connected to the stalking because she has been seeing Oscar. She records footage of Alma and Vadim together, but she is not the person who sends it to Alma’s father. Oscar obtains the material and forwards it to Edward, knowing that exposing the relationship will create another obstacle between Alma and Vadim.

Why Are Alma and Vadim Arrested?

Oscar escalates his efforts after realizing that warnings alone will not separate them. Drugs are found in Vadim’s car, and police treat Alma as a suspected accomplice when both of them are taken into custody. The arrest allows Oscar to use the legal system as another means of controlling someone who is trying to leave his orbit.

Alma insists to her father that Oscar organized everything and that Vadim has been set up. Edward, however, is much more concerned about protecting Alma and regaining control over her future than proving Vadim’s innocence. He has already discovered that she abandoned the path he planned for her when she secretly chose film school instead of law.

Vadim faces the most serious consequences because his circumstances make it much harder for him to simply walk away. Alma has access to her father’s money and legal influence, while Vadim has neither advantage. Edward immediately recognizes that imbalance and ultimately uses it to force Alma into making the most painful choice of the film.

Why Does Alma Leave Vadim?

Alma leaves Vadim because Edward makes his legal help conditional on her ending their relationship. She begs her father to help Vadim, eventually telling him that she will do anything if he gets him out. Edward agrees, but only if Alma comes to Paris, prepares to take over the family law firm and never sees Vadim again.

Alma accepts because refusing could leave Vadim facing years in prison. Her choice is therefore not a rejection of their relationship, even though Vadim initially experiences it as abandonment. She decides that protecting his future matters more than remaining physically beside him, which is why her farewell message repeatedly makes clear that she is being taken away from him rather than willingly walking away.

Her letter also explains the emotional logic behind the title. Alma says that when forced to choose between “you and us,” she chooses Vadim. Their relationship cannot continue immediately, but her decision is still made out of love because she is sacrificing the life she wants so that he has a chance to regain his own.

Does Alma Give Up Filmmaking?

For the moment, yes. Alma’s agreement with Edward means leaving the filmmaking course and moving to Paris to begin the life he originally wanted for her. That makes her sacrifice larger than simply agreeing not to see Vadim, because filmmaking is the first major decision Alma has ever made entirely for herself.

Before leaving, she completes the student film she and Vadim created together. The finished project is credited as “You+Me, a film by Alma Lancaster and Vadim Arcadi,” preserving both their creative partnership and the relationship that inspired it. The movie becomes something neither Edward nor Oscar can entirely take away from them, even after Alma is forced onto a different path.

The ending does not suggest Alma has stopped loving cinema. Instead, she temporarily gives up the opportunity to pursue it because she believes that is the price of helping Vadim. The open ending leaves room for her to reclaim that ambition once she gains more independence from Edward.

What Happens to Vadim After Alma Leaves?

Vadim is eventually released on bail, but the conditions initially prevent him from leaving the country. That matters because he has been trying to travel to Los Angeles to deal with the inheritance left by his parents. The money represents more than financial security because it offers the possibility of building a life that is no longer dependent on Oscar.

The film later jumps forward and confirms that Vadim eventually makes it to Los Angeles. In his closing narration, he explains that after Alma left, he finally traveled there to receive his parents’ inheritance and saw it as the promise of a fresh start. The fact that he can make the trip also shows that the legal restrictions trapping him earlier in the film are no longer preventing him from leaving the country.

Vadim is therefore in a fundamentally different position by the final scene. Oscar’s influence is no longer defining every decision he makes, he has access to the inheritance his parents intended for him, and he finally has the freedom to choose where he goes next. The problem is that the person he most wants to share that freedom with is no longer beside him.

What Happens to Oscar?

Oscar’s final fate is deliberately left unresolved. The film clearly establishes that he has manipulated Vadim and Felix, targeted Alma and engineered the circumstances that lead to Vadim’s arrest, but it does not provide a neat final scene showing him being prosecuted. His absence from the closing moments is less satisfying as legal resolution than it is important symbolically.

What matters for Vadim’s arc is that Oscar no longer controls his future. For much of the movie, Vadim behaves as though every attempt to escape will only make things worse because Oscar can threaten his education, his freedom and the people around him. By the time of the final time jump, Vadim has moved forward with his inheritance and can think about finding Alma rather than simply surviving Oscar.

That does not mean Oscar is absolved or that everything he has done disappears. The ending simply chooses Alma and Vadim’s future over a detailed account of what happens to him. If the story continues, Oscar’s actions could still have consequences, but the first film leaves that question open.

Do Alma and Vadim End Up Together?

Not yet. You+Me – Against the World does not end with Alma and Vadim physically reunited, which makes the conclusion bittersweet rather than conventionally happy. Alma is living in Paris under the arrangement she made with Edward, while Vadim has finally reached Los Angeles and gained access to the inheritance that can help him begin again.

Then Vadim receives a photograph connected to Alma along with an address in the Latin Quarter of Paris. The gesture gives him something he did not have when she first disappeared from his life: a way back to her. Whether Alma personally arranged every detail is not spelled out in a lengthy explanation, but the message clearly reopens a connection that Edward wanted permanently closed.

Vadim’s response makes the film’s intention unmistakable. He admits that he has every reason to resent Alma for leaving, yet the one thing he refuses to give up is “you and me.” His final challenge to Alma is essentially a promise that their separation will not be the last word on their relationship.

Will Vadim Go to Paris?

The movie ends before showing Vadim actually arriving in Paris, but everything about the closing sequence points in that direction. He now has money, the freedom to travel and an address connected to Alma. The obstacles that made finding her impossible immediately after his release have therefore changed considerably.

More importantly, Vadim’s final narration says he cannot forget her despite believing he has every right to be angry. The photograph and Paris address transform his grief into a new objective. Instead of ending with Vadim simply accepting that Alma is gone, the film ends with him effectively deciding to pursue the possibility that they can choose each other again.

That unresolved movement toward Paris also suits the movie’s origins as an adaptation of Emma Green’s larger Toi+Moi literary saga. Prime Video has adapted the first part of a story that extends beyond a single romantic crisis, so the closing cliffhanger functions naturally as both an emotional ending and an opening toward whatever might come next.

What Does the Ending Mean?

Both Alma and Vadim begin the film living inside futures other people have designed for them. Edward has already decided that Alma will become a lawyer and inherit his professional world, while Oscar keeps Vadim indebted to a life he never freely chose. Falling in love gives them something neither expects: another person who sees the life they actually want.

That is why their separation does not function as proof that the relationship has failed. Alma proves her love by giving up what she wants when she believes Vadim’s freedom depends on it, while Vadim eventually reaches a point where he can choose his future without Oscar deciding it for him. Their tragedy is that they gain those freedoms at different moments.

The final Paris address changes the ending from a breakup into a pause. Alma may still be living according to Edward’s conditions, and Vadim may only just have escaped the circumstances that controlled him, but neither has emotionally surrendered the future they imagined together.
