Why Did Kiara Kill Groff in Outer Banks Season 5?

Kiara kills Chandler Groff in the Outer Banks Season 5 finale because her pursuit of him has never really been about the Blue Crown. Groff murdered JJ directly in front of her after JJ had already surrendered the treasure to save her life, and Kiara spends the final season carrying that loss into every encounter with him. Their last fight during the hurricane finally gives her the chance to stop him while Groff is once again trying to escape with stolen treasure. Kiara does not simply execute a helpless man for revenge, however. She kills him during a violent struggle in which Groff is also trying to kill her, making the scene both the completion of her revenge arc and a fight for survival.

Kiara’s revenge begins with JJ’s murder

Kiara’s motive is established before Season 5 even begins. In the Season 4 finale, JJ retrieves the Blue Crown in Morocco, only for Groff to grab Kiara and hold a knife to her. JJ immediately gives his biological father the Crown in exchange for Kiara’s life, but Groff kills him anyway, stabbing JJ because he had earlier refused to pull him out of a well. Kiara holds JJ as he dies, making her the Pogue most directly connected to both the murder and Groff’s cruelty.

The final word of Season 4 is Kiara’s promise of “revenge,” and the creators were very clear about what that meant for the final season. Josh Pate described Kiara as the “lead dog” in the hunt for Groff, while the creators said the Pogues would feel that failing to avenge JJ meant failing their friendship with him. They also explained that Season 5 would start with revenge before moving through other ideas such as grief, understanding and eventually finding peace. Kiara’s final confrontation with Groff therefore pays off a story that was deliberately placed at the center of her Season 5 arc.

Why Did Kiara Kill Groff in Outer Banks Season 5?

How does Kiara actually kill Groff?

Kiara kills Groff aboard a boat during the hurricane in the series finale. Groff is attempting to escape with the stolen Royal Merchant gold when Kiara tracks him down and secretly gets aboard his vessel. She eventually attacks him, stabbing him in the side before the two enter a prolonged fight on deck. Groff still proves dangerous enough to gain the advantage at different points, so the confrontation never becomes a simple execution.

During the struggle, Kiara manages to get Groff tangled in the sail’s ropes and raises him from the deck. The mast then breaks in the storm, leaving Groff suspended over the violent water while the broken section remains connected to the ship. Kiara cuts the rope holding the damaged mast, causing it to fall into the ocean and drag Groff down with it. Season 5 does not provide another escape for him after that point, making the scene his definitive death.

Is Kiara killing Groff only about revenge?

Revenge is the emotional reason Kiara follows Groff, but the circumstances of his death are more complicated than Kiara simply murdering him in cold blood. Their final encounter becomes a physical fight in which Groff is actively dangerous and gains control over Kiara before she turns the situation around. She has every reason to believe that allowing Groff another opportunity to escape could get her killed, just as his previous escapes repeatedly led to more violence.

That distinction is important because Outer Banks spends Season 5 asking what revenge does to the Pogues after JJ’s death. Groff is responsible not only for JJ’s murder but for Larissa’s death, Hollis Robinson’s murder, repeated attempts to frame JJ and multiple betrayals connected with the Blue Crown. The Season 4 creators described him as a deliberately malevolent, sociopathic figure capable of rationalizing almost anything he does. Kiara wants revenge, but by the time she cuts the rope, Groff is hardly an unarmed prisoner waiting to be punished.

Why does Kiara kill Groff instead of Rafe or John B?

Kiara is the most appropriate character to end Groff’s story because she witnessed the act that turned the final season personal. John B loses his best friend, and Rafe has his own reasons to hate Groff after being deceived and attacked by him, but Kiara is the person JJ dies trying to protect. His last moments happen in her arms, and his death becomes the grief that she cannot escape when Season 5 begins.

The creators effectively foreshadowed this choice when discussing Season 5 after JJ’s death. They said Kiara would become the “spine” of the final season in much the same way JJ had been central to Season 4. That did not guarantee she would personally kill Groff, but it established that his murder of JJ would reshape her more dramatically than anyone else. Giving Groff’s final confrontation to Rafe might have produced a satisfying villain-versus-villain moment, but it would have removed Kiara from the resolution of the story that had defined her season.

Does killing Groff give Kiara closure over JJ?

Not completely. Groff’s death ends Kiara’s revenge mission, but Season 5 still has to separate revenge from actual acceptance. Killing the person responsible cannot restore JJ, which becomes particularly important when Kiara later confronts the mythology surrounding the Blue Crown and the possibility of bringing the dead back. The finale ultimately allows her to remember JJ without treating Groff’s death as a magical cure for grief.

That makes Groff’s death more useful as an ending to the chase than as an ending to Kiara’s mourning. She spends the season believing there is something she can still do about what happened, first by pursuing the killer and later by confronting the Crown’s supposed power. Once those possibilities are exhausted, she has to decide what her own life looks like without JJ. Revenge removes Groff from that future, but it does not erase the person Kiara lost.

Kiara kills Groff because he murdered JJ and because, during their final fight, he remains an immediate threat to her life. Outer Banks deliberately makes her the character who finishes the revenge story Season 4 set in motion, rather than handing that moment to another Pogue. The more important change comes afterward: for the first time since JJ died, Kiara no longer has Groff to chase. She has to live with the fact that justice and grief are not the same thing.
