Why Did John B and Sarah Name Their Baby JJ in Outer Banks?

John B and Sarah name their son JJ in the Outer Banks series finale to honor JJ Maybank, John B’s best friend and one of the original Pogues. The choice also pays off unusually direct foreshadowing from Season 4, when JJ himself jokes that “JJ” would be a good name for either a boy or a girl after learning about Sarah’s pregnancy. Season 5 later jumps forward to John B and Sarah’s wedding, where their baby boy is revealed as JJ. The series never confirms exactly what both J’s in the baby’s formal name stand for, so it is safest to say the child is called JJ rather than inventing a full name.

When do we learn the baby’s name?

The reveal comes near the very end of the series after the Pogues survive the hurricane and recover the Royal Merchant gold. The finale moves through several updates showing how their lives change once the years of treasure hunting finally pay off. John B and Sarah rebuild the Routledge home, welcome their son and eventually get married there.

At their wedding, Kiara walks with the baby, and the final sequence identifies him as JJ. John B and Sarah then join the other Pogues for the closing group moment, effectively bringing a new JJ into the family just as the original group reaches the end of its story.

It is one of the finale’s clearest attempts to connect the Pogues’ future to the friend they lost.

Season 4 already told us what they would probably call him

The name was not invented for the final scene. In Season 4, Sarah discovers that she is pregnant, and JJ eventually learns that John B is going to become a father. During the finale, JJ suggests that “JJ” would make a good baby name because it works for a boy or a girl.

Netflix’s own Season 4 ending coverage immediately highlighted the possibility that John B and Sarah might name the child after him. When asked about it at the time, co-creator Josh Pate responded in a way that strongly teased the eventual payoff without formally revealing the Season 5 ending.

After JJ dies later in the same episode, the seemingly casual suggestion becomes much more significant.

Why Did John B and Sarah Name Their Baby JJ in Outer Banks?

Why is naming him after JJ so important to John B?

JJ is more than one of John B’s friends. From the beginning of Outer Banks, the two function much more like brothers, especially because both come from unstable homes shaped by difficult fathers. JJ repeatedly risks himself for John B and the rest of the Pogues, and his final act follows exactly the same pattern.

Groff threatens Kiara, and JJ hands over the Blue Crown to save her despite knowing what the treasure could mean for the group. He then tells Groff that he already has everything he wants because he has his friends and the life they created together.

Naming John B’s son after him turns that idea into something permanent.

JJ loses his own future, but he remains part of the Pogues’ next generation.

Does baby JJ’s name mean the original JJ was reincarnated?

No. Season 5 does not establish that John B and Sarah’s child is literally JJ Maybank reincarnated.

That theory had circulated among fans before release because Sarah’s pregnancy, the Blue Crown’s supposed resurrection powers and JJ’s Season 4 baby-name suggestion all seemed capable of converging. Some viewers even speculated that the baby’s birth might become the metaphorical version of JJ “coming back.”

The actual finale keeps the two ideas separate. Kiara attempts to use the Blue Crown to resurrect JJ, but he does not return physically. Sarah and John B later name their son after him as a memorial.

There is no canonical indication that the baby contains JJ’s spirit or is a supernatural rebirth.

What does JJ actually stand for?

This requires a little care because the show has been deliberately playful about the initials.

Season 4 revealed that the original JJ’s birth name included Jackson, with Netflix noting that Jackson was one of the J’s. The creators themselves were less definitive about exactly how the complete nickname had originally been constructed.

As for John B and Sarah’s son, Season 5 does not clearly establish his full legal name. Netflix Life similarly notes that the finale gives viewers “JJ” without specifying what both initials stand for.

So claims that the baby is definitely named “John Jackson,” “John Jr.” or another expanded version go beyond what the finale confirms.

The confirmed answer is simply JJ.

Baby JJ changes what the final Pogue photo means

Outer Banks begins with a group of young people trying to build a family because their biological families repeatedly fail them. By the final season, that chosen family has survived long enough to create an actual next generation.

John B and Sarah are married. Pope and Cleo are building their own future. Kiara has found a way to carry JJ’s memory without being consumed by his death. Even Rafe has finally left the Cameron cycle behind.

Putting baby JJ into the final Pogue gathering therefore does more than deliver an emotional callback.

The original JJ repeatedly insisted that being a Pogue was about loyalty rather than money or status. The baby bearing his name becomes the clearest sign that the family he fought to protect continues after him.

JJ Maybank does not come back from the dead in Season 5. But John B and Sarah make sure his name comes home with them.
