Sid Baker spends much of Slow Horses Season 6 believing that Diana Taverner remains someone she can trust. That confidence makes the events of Episode 4 particularly significant, because Diana ultimately chooses to reveal Sid’s location rather than protect the former Slough House agent from the people searching for her.
The decision is not driven by a personal dispute between Diana and Sid. Instead, it comes from an unofficial operation in Russia, Sid’s stolen identity and a demand from senior GRU officer Vassily Rasnokov. Faced with a threat to Slough House and growing pressure on her own career, Diana makes the kind of calculation that has defined her throughout the series.

Why Does the GRU Want Sid Baker?
The answer begins with Kazan. Sid learned in Episode 3 that official travel documents had been created in her name for a trip to Russia, despite the fact that she had never travelled there. MI5 dismissed the discrepancy as a system problem, but Sid became suspicious after unfamiliar people began looking for her.
She later discovered information about a woman in Russia whose fate appeared connected to the same timeline. Episode 4 finally gives that woman an intelligence connection and explains why the issue has become so serious.
The woman was a GRU officer linked to the earlier loss of two MI5 personnel. Russian intelligence therefore believes what happened in Kazan was a deliberate British response rather than an unrelated incident. Because Sid’s identity appears in the official records, the GRU believes she was the MI5 operative involved.
Did Sid Really Carry Out the Kazan Operation?
No. Everything Sid has said indicates that she was never in Russia and had no knowledge of the operation.
That means another person appears to have travelled or operated using Sid Baker’s identity. Her unusual circumstances made that possible because MI5 had effectively erased her normal records after the events of Season 1 and secretly relocated her during her recovery.
To outsiders examining official documentation, Sid would therefore appear to be responsible even though the real Sid was living elsewhere. The mystery Season 6 still has to answer is who actually used her credentials and who authorized them to do so.
What Does Vassily Want From Diana?
Vassily Rasnokov contacts Diana directly after Damien Cantor warns her that she should expect an important call. Vassily does not simply want information. He wants Sid handed over because he believes she was responsible for what happened to the GRU officer in Kazan.
He also understands that Diana needs something from him. Current and former Slough House personnel have been facing an escalating campaign, and Diana is under increasing pressure to bring the situation under control.

Vassily offers her a straightforward exchange. If Diana gives him Sid, the campaign against Slough House will stop. That puts Diana in a position where protecting one former agent could mean allowing many other people connected to Lamb to remain exposed.
Why Does Diana Agree?
Diana chooses Sid because she believes sacrificing one person can contain the larger crisis. It is also important that her own position has become vulnerable. Oliver Nash and the Limitations Committee are examining the Kazan incident, while questions are being raised about how such an operation could have been authorized and funded.
Diana apparently did not have the normal budget or authority to carry it out through conventional MI5 channels. The possibility that outside money was involved creates another connection to Damien Cantor, who has already demonstrated that he possesses considerable leverage over her.
Diana is therefore trying to solve several problems simultaneously. Giving Vassily what he wants could stop the pressure on Slough House, reduce the immediate Russian threat and potentially prevent the Kazan story from becoming even more damaging. Sid unfortunately becomes the person Diana decides she can afford to lose.
Why Does Sid Still Trust Diana?
Sid’s faith in Diana comes from their history together. Sid was never simply another failed agent placed at Slough House. Earlier in the series, it emerged that Diana had positioned her there in part to observe River Cartwright, giving the two women a relationship that existed outside the normal Slough House hierarchy.
Even after her years away from active service, Sid still appears to believe Diana represents a trustworthy link to MI5. When River questions whether contacting the Park is wise, Sid repeatedly argues that reaching Diana is their best option.
That confidence also explains why Sid takes such a risk to make the call in Episode 4. She believes she is finally reaching someone capable of protecting her and resolving the mystery surrounding her Russian records. Instead, that call gives Diana exactly what Vassily needs.
How Does Diana Find Sid?
Sid slips away to use Coe’s phone after the group reaches the shopping center. When the call connects, Diana has already spoken with Vassily and made her decision.
Rather than arranging protection, Diana orders the call traced. Once Sid’s location is identified, the connection is ended.
Jim and Jane are then able to locate her. Sid tries to get away, but the pair eventually take her with them, leaving River to discover that his concerns about trusting the Park were justified.
The sequence turns Sid’s strongest remaining institutional relationship into the reason her location becomes compromised.
Does Diana Betray Sid?
From Sid’s perspective, unquestionably. She contacts Diana expecting assistance and instead has her location passed into a situation that puts her directly at risk.
Diana would probably describe the decision differently. She sees intelligence work in terms of outcomes, compromises and acceptable losses, and Vassily has offered her a way to protect the larger Slough House group.
That distinction is central to Diana’s character. She can care about individual agents while still deciding that institutional interests matter more when the two come into conflict.
Season 6 Episode 4 pushes that philosophy further than usual because Sid is being held responsible for an operation she did not personally carry out.
Diana knows the official record does not tell the full story, but she chooses the bargain anyway. In doing so, she may stop one part of the campaign against Slough House, but she also confirms River and Lamb’s growing belief that trusting the Park can sometimes be just as dangerous as avoiding it.
