Why Did Bill Leave Leanne? Season 2 Finally Explains Their Divorce

One year after Bill abruptly ended their marriage, Leanne finally admits something she was not ready to accept when the divorce began: Bill may have betrayed her, but their marriage had been falling apart long before his email arrived.

The Season 2 episode “Bang Me” takes Leanne back to the exact anniversary of the day her old life collapsed. What begins as a trip to Kimi’s salon for a drastic haircut becomes one of the show’s most revealing examinations of Leanne and Bill’s relationship. By the end, Leanne does not excuse Bill’s affair or the cruel way he left her, but she accepts what she jokingly calculates as 23% responsibility for their marriage failing.

That number is played for laughs, but the realization behind it is serious. Leanne now understands that Bill leaving was not the beginning of their problems. It was the moment she was finally forced to see them.

How Did Bill End His Marriage to Leanne?

Bill ended the marriage in an extraordinarily impersonal way: he sent Leanne an email. Leanne remembers opening her inbox and initially expecting an ordinary message from her husband. Instead, Bill told her that he had met someone else and wanted to be with her. After roughly three decades together and raising two children, Leanne learned that her marriage was over while sitting in front of a computer. Her reaction was immediate rage.

She drove to Bill’s RV dealership, ran red lights on the way and even hit a mailbox. Once she arrived, she took over the dealership’s announcement system and publicly demanded that her cheating husband come out and face her.

Tyler happens to be there, which means Leanne’s son learns about his father’s affair almost as abruptly as she does. When Leanne asks him to choose a side, Tyler assures his mother that he is with her. Bill, however, manages to avoid the confrontation.

Leanne Season 2 Ending Explained: Who Does Leanne End Up With?

That detail matters because the episode emphasizes how little direct communication existed between them by the end. Bill does not sit down with Leanne and explain that he is unhappy. He sends an email and disappears, leaving Leanne to process the humiliation by herself.

Why Did Bill Really Leave Leanne?

Bill left because he had fallen for another woman, but “Bang Me” suggests that the affair was only part of the answer.

During her conversation with Kimi, Leanne initially tells the story the way she has always understood it: Bill destroyed their marriage. She was the blindsided wife, and he was the husband who abandoned her.

As she talks, however, Leanne remembers warning signs she had ignored. The most important comes from her daughter Josie. In a flashback from before the separation, Leanne tries to convince 27-year-old Josie that it is time to move into her own apartment. Josie turns the conversation back on her parents and makes an uncomfortable observation.

According to Josie, she is practically the only subject Leanne and Bill still have in common. Their conversations revolve around Josie’s job, boyfriend, bills and life choices. Without her in the house, Josie doubts her parents would have much left to talk about. Leanne dismisses the idea at the time. Looking back a year later, she realizes Josie may have understood the marriage better than either parent wanted to admit.

Were Leanne and Bill Already Growing Apart?

Yes. That is the central revelation of the episode. Leanne recalls that Bill was frequently away working, and the episode uses memories of their home life to show how emotionally distant the couple had become. They were still married and still operating as a family, but companionship had gradually been replaced by routine. That does not mean Bill was justified in cheating.

The episode makes a careful distinction between explaining why a marriage had deteriorated and excusing the way one person ended it. Bill could have spoken honestly with Leanne before pursuing someone else. He could have tried counseling, asked for changes or simply admitted that he was unhappy. Instead, he waited until there was another woman and then ended a decades-long marriage by email.

Leanne’s growth comes from recognizing that Bill can still be responsible for his betrayal while she acknowledges that she was not paying enough attention to what had happened between them.

Why Does Leanne Say She Is 23% Responsible for the Divorce?

By the end of the episode, Leanne tells Carol she is prepared to accept 23% responsibility for the divorce. It is classic Leanne: an emotionally significant breakthrough immediately turned into a very specific joke.

Leanne initially arrives at 25%, but reduces her share after remembering several Valentine’s Days when she told Bill she did not want anything and became annoyed when he actually believed her.

The joke works because Leanne is not suddenly claiming that she and Bill were equally responsible. She remains furious about the affair and the email. What has changed is her willingness to examine herself.

Earlier in the series, Leanne needed to see herself entirely as the victim because she genuinely had been blindsided. A year later, she is emotionally secure enough to admit that being wronged does not mean she handled every part of the marriage perfectly. That is a major change for the character.

Why Does Leanne Want Bangs?

Leanne’s desire for bangs is really about the anniversary of the divorce. She tells Kimi that she wants a dramatic change, but Kimi refuses to immediately cut her hair. Instead, she asks Leanne to explain the feeling behind the haircut. That conversation forces Leanne back through the worst period of her life.

She remembers Bill’s email, confronting him at work, bingeing on fast food afterward and then driving through the night to find Carol in Chicago. She also remembers the smaller moments that now look different with hindsight, especially Josie’s warning about the emptiness in her parents’ relationship.

By the time Leanne finishes telling the story, she no longer wants bangs. The external transformation suddenly feels unnecessary because the real change has already happened internally. She does not need a different hairstyle to prove she is no longer the woman Bill left a year earlier.

Does Leanne Want Bill Back?

Nothing in “Bang Me” suggests Leanne’s new perspective means she wants to undo the divorce. Her realization is about understanding the marriage, not restoring it.

Accepting some responsibility actually allows Leanne to move further away from Bill because she no longer has to define herself entirely through what he did to her. As long as the story remained simply “Bill ruined my life,” Bill continued to occupy the center of her identity.

Now Leanne can say something more complicated: Bill hurt her badly, their marriage had genuine problems, and she survived both. The episode therefore gives Leanne something more useful than reconciliation. It gives her perspective.

Bill is still responsible for the affair and for the cowardly way he announced his departure. But for the first time, Leanne can look back at the marriage without needing herself to be perfect in order for Bill to have been wrong.

That is why the seemingly silly 23% joke is one of the most important moments in Season 2. Leanne is no longer just recovering from the divorce. She is finally understanding it.
