Who Is the Other Ryan Holder in Dark Matter Season 2? Why Did Jason 2 Bring Him There?

Ryan Holder finally gets what he has been chasing when Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 3 brings him back to his original Chicago. His apartment looks exactly right, even down to damage he remembers causing shortly before Jason 2 abandoned him in another reality. Then the impossible becomes even stranger: another Ryan Holder walks through the door. The man is an alternate version of Ryan from another world, not a duplicate created during Ryan’s journey through the Box. He appears to have suffered a remarkably similar fate, having also been stranded in another reality by a Jason Dessen. More surprisingly, this Ryan already knows Jason 2 and says Jason has been helping him get home. Episode 3, however, deliberately refuses to explain why Jason 2 brought him into Original Ryan’s world.

SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Second Ryan Is From Another Reality

The other Ryan is simply another universe’s version of Ryan Holder. Episode 3 reinforces that distinction when the two men meet face to face in Ryan’s apartment. TVMaze’s Episode 3 cast listing even credits Jimmi Simpson separately as Ryan Holder and Ryan Holder 4, confirming that viewers are dealing with two distinct variants of the same character.

That is different from what happened with the dozens of Jasons at the end of Season 1. Those Jasons were created because Jason 1 kept making different choices while traveling through the Corridor, causing his path to branch repeatedly. The second Ryan does not appear to be the result of Original Ryan suddenly splitting into multiple versions during his current journey with Amanda.

Every reality already has the potential to contain its own Ryan Holder. The man inside the apartment therefore comes from another branch of the multiverse with his own experiences, relationships and version of Jason Dessen. What makes him important is how closely his recent story resembles Original Ryan’s.

When Original Ryan asks what is happening, the other Ryan quickly realizes what has happened to him. He asks whether Jason Dessen stranded him in another world. Ryan confirms that he did. That recognition strongly implies that the second Ryan knows the experience firsthand.

Why Is Another Ryan Living in Original Ryan’s Apartment?

This is where Episode 3 turns the reunion into a mystery. The apartment belongs to Original Ryan. He verifies it through tiny details that Amanda could never have known, including a mark he accidentally made shortly before Jason 2 took him to the Box. He and Amanda therefore have not arrived in the second Ryan’s universe by mistake. The second Ryan is the outsider.

He nevertheless seems comfortable enough in the apartment to be using it, and he immediately understands that Original Ryan has finally returned home. His reaction is not hostile. In fact, he seems relieved, telling Ryan that he had been hoping he would come back.

The most revealing exchange comes when he asks Amanda whether she has any “lavender wings.” She is stunned because that language belongs to the drug technology connected to traveling through the Box. This Ryan therefore knows far more about multiversal travel than the Ryan who disappeared from this world originally did. He then makes a phone call and tells someone that “he’s here.” The person who arrives is Jason 2. That connection changes everything.

Jason 2 Has Been Helping the Other Ryan

The second Ryan openly defends Jason 2 when Original Ryan attacks him. He explains that Jason is the person he called and says Jason 2 has been trying to help him get home. That is the strongest confirmed clue about their relationship.

It also creates an obvious contradiction. If Jason 2 is genuinely helping this Ryan return to his own universe, why is he currently sitting in Original Ryan’s apartment instead? Original Ryan eventually asks Jason 2 exactly that question during their escape: “Why did you bring another me here?” Jason 2 does not answer.

The chase with DARPA interrupts the confrontation, and Episode 3 ends without returning to the question. That silence feels deliberate because Jason 2 is normally quite willing to justify his behavior, even when everyone around him considers it monstrous.

There are several possible explanations, but none is confirmed yet. Jason 2 may have brought the alternate Ryan to this world as part of an attempt to navigate him home. He may have needed another Ryan for something connected to the Box or Lavender Fairy. His decision could also come from guilt after what he did to Original Ryan in Season 1. For now, those remain interpretations rather than answers supplied by the show.

What can be said confidently is that Jason 2 and the second Ryan have been working together for long enough that the Ryan trusts him.

Does Jason 2 Know Where Original Ryan Was?

The episode does not establish that Jason 2 deliberately placed the second Ryan in the apartment because he knew Original Ryan was about to return. In fact, the other Ryan appears surprised when Ryan and Amanda arrive.

Amanda accidentally finds the correct world because she focuses on Jason 2 while navigating the Corridor. She realizes afterward that the Box brought them there because Jason 2 is present in that reality. Ryan initially misreads that discovery as proof that Jason 1 never succeeded in reclaiming Daniela and Charlie.

The truth is more complicated. Jason 1 did return, but his journey created numerous alternate Jasons along the way. Daniela and Charlie eventually escaped into the Box with one of them, leaving the original world behind. Jason 2 has remained there while DARPA hunts the remaining Jason variants.

That means Jason 2 has had time to build an entirely new life after losing the family he stole. His involvement with another Ryan appears to be part of whatever he has been doing during that period.

Whether helping stranded multiversal travelers has become some form of penance for him is one of the more interesting possibilities Episode 3 creates, but the show has not confirmed it.

Why Do Two Ryan Holders Matter to DARPA?

The reunion immediately makes an already dangerous government investigation worse. DARPA has been tracking the strange appearance of numerous identical Jason Dessens across Chicago. According to Jason 2, officials currently believe those men may be clones. Then their surveillance catches two Ryan Holders standing in the same room.

That changes the problem dramatically. If Jason is the only person appearing multiple times, DARPA can imagine some technology designed specifically to replicate him. Two Ryans suggest something much larger is happening.

Jason 2 understands the danger immediately. He explains that DARPA has already questioned him and is targeting people who have known Jason for years because officials suspect they are involved in whatever created the duplicates. Original Ryan and his alternate counterpart appearing together give the agency exactly the kind of evidence that will make it investigate harder.

Ryan has finally returned home after spending months desperate to reach it, only to discover that staying there may now be impossible. Jason 2 tells him that everyone he loves will eventually be dragged into the investigation.

It is an especially cruel reversal. Ryan spends the first three episodes of Season 2 trying to reclaim his world, but the moment he succeeds, another version of himself helps make that world unsafe.

Why Did Jason 2 Bring the Other Ryan There?

Dark Matter has not answered that question yet. Episode 3 intentionally has Original Ryan ask it directly and then prevents Jason 2 from responding.

What the episode does establish is enough to narrow the mystery. The second Ryan comes from another reality, he appears to have been stranded by a Jason Dessen, he understands the Lavender Fairy technology, and Jason 2 has been trying to help him find his way home. His presence in Original Ryan’s universe is therefore connected to Jason 2’s post-Season 1 activities rather than being a random coincidence.

The bigger question is whether Jason 2 has genuinely changed. Season 1’s Jason 2 treated alternate worlds as places he could manipulate for his own benefit. He kidnapped Jason 1, stole his family and later abandoned Ryan in another universe simply because Ryan had become inconvenient. Finding him now assisting another stranded Ryan is a striking reversal.

Episode 3 is not ready to tell us whether that is redemption, another experiment or another selfish plan disguised as help. For now, the other Ryan’s existence matters because he proves Jason 2 has continued working with the multiverse after losing Daniela and Charlie. Original Ryan may have finally found his way home, but the other version of himself is evidence that Jason 2’s story with Ryan Holder is far from finished.
