Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 3, “Everything Beautiful, Everything Terrible,” gives Jason Dessen exactly what he claimed to want and then shows why he cannot live with it. His family finally has the beginnings of an ordinary life in the technologically limited Chicago they chose in the previous episode. Charlie is making friends, Daniela is working again, and Jason is supposed to be preparing to destroy the Box permanently. Instead, the machine begins pulling him back intellectually long before it physically returns. At the same time, Ryan and Amanda finally reach Ryan’s original world, only to discover that Jason 2, another Ryan and the United States government have turned it into something far more dangerous than the home Ryan remembers. By the ending, Jason succeeds in destroying his Box, only to learn that destroying it does not sever a world from the multiverse at all.

Jason Cannot Stop Thinking About the Box

The episode begins with Jason approaching a group of academics with what sounds like a hypothetical question. He asks them to imagine that his old superposition research could eventually place a human being in superposition and allow that person to move between realities. Jason is careful not to tell them that somebody has already achieved exactly that, but the discussion gives him the intellectual stimulation he has clearly been missing.

One of the scientists compares such an invention to sailing ships, the internet and other technologies that transformed civilization. Discovery can produce knowledge, wealth and connection, but it can also create exploitation, isolation and destruction. The conclusion gives the episode its title: a machine like the Box would inevitably produce “everything beautiful” and “everything terrible.” Another scientist makes an even more important observation. Asking whether humanity should create such technology is almost pointless because if humans can create it, eventually somebody will.

Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 34

Jason hears precisely what he does not need to hear. He has spent years regretting the life in which he abandoned his scientific potential, only to discover that another Jason took that abandoned idea and achieved the impossible. The Box nearly destroyed his family, but it is also physical proof that the dream he sacrificed was achievable. That contradiction becomes the real threat to his marriage in this episode.

The Dessen Family Starts Building a New Life

For a while, the alternate Chicago actually works. Charlie begins making friends at school and connects with Eduardo, who introduces him to music and offers to teach him how to skateboard. Their conversation quietly reinforces just how different this reality is. Music that Charlie considers familiar does not necessarily exist here, giving him another reminder that he has not simply moved to another city. He has moved into another history.

Jason and Daniela also begin creating something that resembles home. They decorate their first Christmas tree in the new reality, and Jason gives Daniela an ornament similar to one they owned before. Daniela breaks down because she has recently driven past their old house and cannot stop thinking about the life they lost. Jason misses it too, but they remind each other that at least they still have their family.

Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 33

Jason tells Daniela that he is preparing enough explosive material to destroy the Box. He eventually attacks the structure and reduces it to wreckage, apparently fulfilling the promise that brought Daniela some sense of safety. The problem is that destroying the machine does not end Jason’s relationship with it. It gives him something else to study.

Meanwhile, Mitchel MacNamara has continued investigating the Dessens. His earlier background check already showed him the impossible fact that the same family appears to exist in Chicago and San Francisco at the same time. He follows Jason to the abandoned facility, watches people enter the Box and then finds nobody inside when he opens it. MacNamara does not understand superposition, but he knows he has found something that cannot be explained by an ordinary identity scam.

Daniela Realizes Jason Has Not Let the Box Go

The episode’s strongest domestic material comes from the way fear has become routine for the Dessens. When Jason returns late one night, Daniela expects him to identify himself with their agreed-upon security question. He initially gives the wrong artist, trying Van Gogh and Vermeer before finally remembering Degas. Nothing dangerous has actually happened, but Daniela’s panic shows what living through multiple versions of Jason has done to her.

Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 36

Charlie is coping differently. While Daniela helps him think about college applications, he jokes that every interesting thing that has happened to him sounds too unbelievable to put in an essay. When Daniela burns dinner and immediately insults herself, Charlie tells her to stop speaking to herself that way. He reminds her that she did not build the Box and is not responsible for everything it has done to them. It is an unexpectedly mature reversal, with Charlie now comforting the parent who has spent two seasons trying to protect him.

Daniela later visits Jason at the destroyed Box and discovers pages of notes. He admits that he has been studying the technology and considering whether he could create an on-off switch instead of permanently eliminating it. In Jason’s mind, this sounds responsible. The Box could remain inaccessible until the family deliberately chose to use it again.

Daniela hears something very different. They agreed to destroy the machine, and Jason secretly changed the plan because he knew she would object. Jason finally admits what is happening inside him. The Box feels like somebody reached into his mind and built the scientific achievement he always dreamed about. He knows Jason 2 needed decades and a team to create it, but Jason cannot stand beside that achievement without wanting to understand how it works.

Daniela’s anger is therefore not really about physics. She is trying to live in the new reality while Jason is emotionally standing beside the Box, wondering what else might be possible. Their argument exposes the central risk of Season 2: Jason may have recovered his family, but the version of him who once chose Daniela over his scientific career is beginning to look back at the road he did not take.

Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 31

Ryan and Amanda Finally Reach Ryan’s World

Ryan and Amanda’s journey produces the episode’s biggest collision of realities. Amanda has Ryan focus less on identifying a world through physical details and more on the person he wants to find. Their next destination initially seems wrong because the Box is surrounded by concrete, but Ryan recognizes his apartment down to the smallest details, including damage he remembers causing himself. They have found Ryan’s original world.

The realization immediately creates another problem. Amanda believes the concrete surrounding the Box is something Jason 2 would have done, meaning Jason 2 is apparently still in this reality. Since Amanda and Ryan do not know that Jason 1 eventually reunited with Daniela and Charlie and then escaped with them into the Box, they reach the wrong conclusion. They assume Jason 1 never made it home.

Ryan then discovers something even stranger inside his own apartment: another Ryan Holder. This Ryan knows enough about the Box to understand that Ryan was stranded in another reality, and he has been working with Jason 2. He calls Jason 2 to the apartment, producing an understandably violent reunion when the original Ryan sees the man who stole his life and abandoned him in another universe.

The meeting barely has time to settle before another threat closes in. DARPA has become involved because the original world was left with the aftermath of Season 1’s multiplying Jasons. Dozens of Jason variants appeared, several died, and the government noticed. DARPA apparently believes the Jasons may be clones and has begun hunting the surviving versions while investigating anyone closely connected with them.

Ryan and Amanda arriving together with another Ryan creates exactly the evidence DARPA has been looking for.

Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 3

Why Is DARPA Hunting the Jasons?

Jason 2 explains the situation while the group flees through Chicago. Jason 1’s journey home created multiple versions of himself because every meaningful decision inside the Corridor could branch into another Jason. Many of those versions reached the same original world believing they were the Jason entitled to Daniela and Charlie. The bodies and unexplained duplicates eventually attracted government attention.

DARPA does not yet understand the Box properly. From its perspective, however, several identical men appearing in one city looks like cloning or an advanced military technology. That is enough to make Jason and anyone associated with him valuable targets. Ryan’s sudden duplicate only makes the mystery bigger.

Jason 2 also confirms one important piece of information for Amanda and Ryan: Daniela and Charlie escaped with one of the Jasons into the Box. They are alive, but Jason 2 does not know exactly where they went. Ryan finally understands that the family he was trying to reach is no longer waiting in this world.

The chase ends with the group heading back toward the Box because remaining in Ryan’s original reality is no longer safe. One question is deliberately left hanging. Ryan asks Jason 2 why he brought another Ryan Holder into this world in the first place, but the episode does not give him an answer. That mystery is likely more important than it initially appears.

Dark Matter Episode 3 Ending: Why Does the Box Respawn?

Jason finally appears to choose his family over the machine. After the fight with Daniela, he attends dinner with her, Blair and Theresa and tells Daniela that the Box is gone. He says he only needs to return to dispose of the remaining advanced material so nobody can discover it. For a brief moment, it seems as if destroying the Box may have given their marriage the clean break Daniela wanted.

Then Jason reaches the site and finds a complete Box standing where the destroyed one had been. The Box has “respawned.”

Jason immediately understands the rule he had overlooked. The Box manifests in a reality when that reality does not already have an operational Box and somebody in the Corridor connects to it. Destroying the local structure therefore does not permanently disconnect a universe. It simply creates a condition in which the Box can materialize there again the next time a traveler reaches that reality.

That explains why Jason’s plan was doomed from the start. He treated the Box like a doorway that could be demolished. In reality, it behaves more like an access point generated by the larger multiversal system. Jason can destroy the physical structure in Chicago, but he cannot destroy the Corridor or prevent another traveler from choosing that world.

Jason races home and immediately makes Daniela use their safe word. This time she answers “Waldorf.” He questions both Daniela and Charlie about whether either has seen or spoken to another version of him during the day. They have not. That gives Jason temporary reassurance that another Jason has not already entered their home, but it does not solve the larger problem.

The appearance of the new Box means someone has connected to their world from the Corridor. The episode does not identify that traveler in the dialogue provided, so it would be speculation to claim that Ryan, Amanda, Jason 2 or another Jason has definitely arrived. What is confirmed is much worse for the Dessens’ long-term plan: their supposedly hidden reality is reachable again.

Jason spent the episode believing he had to choose between destroying the Box and understanding it. The ending reveals that he never really had the first option. The Box cannot simply be smashed out of existence, and his family can never rely on physical destruction to keep the multiverse outside their door. That is the “terrible” side of the breakthrough described in the opening discussion. Once humanity has found a way to cross realities, there may be no meaningful way to make that discovery undiscovered.
