Where Is Josie in Leanne Season 2? Why Hannah Pilkes Barely Appears

Netflix announced Hannah Pilkes as a returning cast member for Leanne Season 2, but viewers who finished the new episodes may be wondering where Josie went. Leanne and Bill’s rebellious daughter, who was an important part of the family dynamic in Season 1, is almost entirely absent from the second season.
Josie has not been killed off, moved away in a major storyline or formally written out of the series. Instead, Season 2 simply gives her a drastically reduced role. Pilkes makes only a brief appearance connected to a flashback late in the season, while the present-day stories increasingly revolve around Leanne, Carol, Mama Margaret, Daddy John and Bill.
Hannah Pilkes Did Return as Josie in Season 2
Josie’s limited screen time is particularly surprising because Netflix specifically included Hannah Pilkes among the returning Season 1 cast when announcing the second season.
In Season 1, Josie is established as Leanne and Bill’s free-spirited daughter and the opposite of her brother Tyler. Tyler is the responsible golden child who works with his father and starts his own family, while Josie is more unpredictable. She moves between jobs and relationships and is well aware of her reputation as the rebel of the Murphy family.

That contrast made both children useful parts of Leanne’s family story during the first season. Season 2, however, substantially changes where its attention goes.
Why Is Josie Barely in Leanne Season 2?
There has been no official statement from Netflix, the producers or Hannah Pilkes explaining why Josie’s role was reduced, so there is currently no basis for saying that Pilkes left the show, was unavailable or was removed for any behind-the-scenes reason. What is clear on screen is that Season 2 shifts its family focus.
Leanne’s parents become much more important after Margaret and John reach a point where their daughters have to become increasingly involved in their everyday lives. That gives Leanne and Carol a new responsibility at the same time Leanne is still navigating divorce, dating and the possibility of building a life that no longer revolves around Bill.
As a result, the show’s central family dynamic changes from Leanne dealing with her husband and adult children to Leanne and Carol dealing with their aging parents.
Tyler is reduced as well, although Graham Rogers still has more opportunities to appear because Tyler works with Bill. Josie has fewer natural connections to the Season 2 plots, which leaves her with considerably less screen time.
Josie Still Plays a Role in Understanding Leanne and Bill’s Marriage
Although Josie barely appears physically, Season 2 uses her for one particularly important revelation about her parents.
During a flashback, Leanne remembers telling Josie that she should consider moving out. Rather than simply accepting the suggestion, Josie points out something uncomfortable about Leanne and Bill’s marriage. She believes she has become one of the only things her parents still regularly talk about.
At the time, Leanne doesn’t take the observation particularly seriously. Looking back after the divorce, however, it becomes much more meaningful. Josie had apparently recognized the emotional distance between Bill and Leanne before either parent was willing to confront it.
The scene gives Josie more importance than her amount of screen time would suggest. Her Season 2 appearance isn’t used to launch a new storyline for her. Instead, she helps Leanne reconsider the story she has been telling herself about the end of her marriage.
Bill leaving remains painful and destructive, but Leanne gradually accepts that their relationship had problems before the separation.
Did Josie Move Away?
Season 2 does not provide a major explanation such as Josie permanently leaving Knoxville or cutting ties with her family.
Her absence is primarily a storytelling absence rather than a dramatic disappearance that the other characters have to explain. The show simply doesn’t follow Josie’s day-to-day life during this batch of episodes.
That is an important distinction because viewers shouldn’t interpret the lack of scenes as evidence that something happened to the character off screen.
Leanne remains a traditional ensemble sitcom, and supporting characters can move in and out depending on which part of Leanne’s life a particular season wants to explore.
Did Hannah Pilkes Leave Leanne?
There is currently no confirmed indication that Hannah Pilkes has permanently left Leanne.
Netflix announced her return for Season 2, and Pilkes does appear as Josie, even if her role is much smaller than expected. Neither Netflix nor Pilkes has announced an exit from the series.
That means Josie could easily return to a larger role if Netflix orders another season and the writers shift their attention back toward Leanne’s children.
Her situation is different from a character receiving a definitive departure story. Nothing in Season 2 closes the door on Josie.
Could Josie Return in Leanne Season 3?
If Leanne continues, Josie remains one of the easiest characters to bring back because she is still part of the Murphy family and has unresolved potential.
Season 1 established her as more than just Leanne’s daughter. Josie’s contrasting relationship with Tyler, her unstable romantic and professional life and her tendency to say what other family members avoid saying all give the writers plenty to revisit.
Season 2 simply doesn’t make those stories a priority. For now, the answer to Josie’s disappearance is therefore much simpler than it initially appears. Hannah Pilkes has not been officially removed from Leanne, and Josie hasn’t suffered some unseen fate. Season 2 temporarily sidelines Leanne’s daughter while shifting its attention toward Leanne, Carol and the challenges of caring for Margaret and John.
Whether that remains the case in a possible third season has not yet been confirmed.
