Ivo spends much of The Perfect Lie looking like one of the quieter casualties of the Dinner Club’s collapsing friendships. His marriage to Hanneke has become painfully distant, Evert’s death unsettles him more than he initially admits, and every new revelation seems to leave him carrying guilt he refuses to explain. The final episode, appropriately titled “Ivo,” finally forces him to confront the reason he stayed silent when Evert came to him for help.
The secret is deeply personal, but its importance goes beyond Ivo’s marriage. It explains one of the most consequential decisions made on the night Evert died.

What Has Ivo Been Hiding?
Ivo has been hiding that he is gay. He has kept his sexuality secret while remaining married to Hanneke, which helps explain the emotional and sexual distance that has existed between them throughout the season.
Earlier episodes frame their marriage as a relationship in which Hanneke feels unwanted and increasingly isolated. The truth does not mean Ivo never cared about her, but it gives a much clearer context to the intimacy problems neither of them has been able to discuss honestly.
Episode 7 finally brings that private conflict into the main murder mystery. Ivo’s fear of being exposed has influenced far more than his marriage.
How Did Babette Find Out?
Babette knows enough about Ivo’s secret to use it against him. The finale reveals that she has leverage over him, and that leverage helps explain why he has been reluctant to tell police everything he knew about Evert.
The series does not need to turn Ivo’s sexuality itself into something sinister. The damaging part is the secrecy surrounding it. Ivo has built a life in which disclosure threatens his marriage, friendships and the image he has maintained inside the Dinner Club, giving Babette exactly the pressure point she needs.
Her manipulation is especially effective because every member of this group is already protecting some version of a perfect life. Ivo’s fear is different from Simon’s financial crimes or Karen’s affair, but it becomes another secret capable of controlling someone’s behavior.
Why Did Evert Go to Ivo Before the Fire?
Evert reaches out to Ivo because he is finally trying to leave Babette and needs someone he believes he can trust. By this point, his marriage has become far more frightening than the version Babette presents to their friends.
Evert has evidence showing how Babette treats him when nobody else is watching. He wants out of the marriage and goes to Ivo looking for support before returning home. Instead of becoming the person who helps Evert escape, Ivo sends him away.

That decision becomes devastating once the full events of the fire are revealed. Evert returns to Babette, tells her their relationship is finished, and never makes it out of the house alive.
Why Didn’t Ivo Help Evert?
Ivo’s refusal is driven by fear. Helping Evert would mean openly opposing Babette at a time when she knows a secret Ivo has spent years protecting.
Babette’s ability to expose him leaves Ivo paralyzed when Evert needs him most. He chooses self-preservation over getting involved in a marriage he knows is dangerous, convincing himself that keeping his own life intact is safer than stepping into Evert’s crisis.
That choice does not make Ivo responsible for the fire. Babette drugs the family and starts the blaze that kills Evert. But the finale makes sure Ivo understands the moral difference between not causing someone’s death and having failed them when there was still time to help.
His guilt is therefore not abstract. He knows Evert came to his door before going home.
Did Ivo Know Babette Would Kill Evert?
There is no indication that Ivo knew Babette was planning to kill Evert. His silence should not be confused with participation in her plan.
What Ivo does know is that Evert is frightened, that the marriage is deeply unhealthy and that Babette has been exerting control over him. Evert also brings information that should make Ivo take his situation seriously. Ivo’s mistake is believing he can stay outside the conflict without consequences.
That is one of the recurring ideas in The Perfect Lie. Nearly everyone convinces themselves that silence is neutral. By the finale, the show has demonstrated repeatedly that silence often protects the person causing the harm.
Ivo’s story is the clearest example because he has to live with exactly what his silence cost.
Why Does Ivo Finally Tell the Truth?
Once Evert is dead and Hanneke is lying in a coma, Ivo no longer has much left to protect by maintaining the same lie. The social life he feared losing has already disintegrated.
He eventually tells investigators what Evert confided in him, including the material that contradicts Babette’s version of their marriage. That information becomes part of the larger chain that allows Karen and police to understand what really happened before the fire.
Coming clean about Evert also means Ivo has to stop treating his sexuality as something other people can weaponize indefinitely. The finale does not resolve what that means for his future with Hanneke because she has not fully regained consciousness.
Her recovery would force a much harder conversation. Ivo can tell police the truth about Evert before he has to tell Hanneke the complete truth about their marriage.
Does Hanneke Know Ivo Is Gay?
The first season does not give Hanneke a full post-reveal conversation with Ivo, so viewers never get to see how much she already suspected or how she would respond once he says it openly. Her dissatisfaction with their lack of intimacy has been clear for much of the series, but knowing that something is wrong is not the same as knowing why.
That unresolved conversation is one of the reasons Hanneke’s final hospital scene matters beyond the balcony mystery. If she survives and recovers, the couple cannot simply return to their old marriage.
Ivo’s secret has already shaped years of distance between them. Hanneke’s own secrets, including her feelings for Evert, have done the same from the other direction.
Their relationship was therefore built on two people avoiding different truths long before Evert’s death exposed the larger Dinner Club.
Ivo’s Secret Explains His Biggest Regret
The reveal works because it does not exist merely to surprise viewers in Episode 7. It reaches backward through Ivo’s behavior and gives his earlier passivity a much more painful meaning.
He was afraid that helping Evert would cost him the life he had built. Instead, refusing to help leaves him with a dead friend, a wife in a coma and the knowledge that Babette successfully used his fear to keep him quiet.
The Perfect Lie is full of characters who hide information because they believe disclosure will destroy their lives. Ivo discovers the opposite. The secret becomes most destructive when keeping it prevents him from doing the one thing he later wishes he had done.
