Netflix’s Crew Girl sends Teagan Tao into an entirely new life before she even gets the chance to settle into the story’s rowing drama. When the series begins, Teagan is a talented young single-sculls rower living comfortably in California with her parents, Ella and David Tao. Within a matter of days, her father disappears, federal investigators arrive, and everything Teagan believed about her family begins to unravel.
The scandal is more than a convenient reason for Teagan to move to Eagle’s Cove. David’s actions continue to affect her relationship with her mother, her reputation at Easton Prep, and even the way she approaches rowing. So, what exactly did Teagan’s father do, and does Crew Girl eventually reveal whether he was actually guilty?

David Tao Was Involved in a Massive Financial Fraud
David Tao, played by Byron Lawson, was a successful luxury hotelier whose wealth allowed the Tao family to live an extremely privileged life. That lifestyle collapses when David is accused of misappropriating tens of millions of dollars. Early reporting about the series described the case as a major financial scandal, while the show itself establishes that federal authorities are investigating David for fraud and embezzlement.
The timing makes the revelation particularly brutal for Teagan. David is present when she competes at the beginning of the series, but he leaves after receiving a mysterious message and misses her victory. Soon afterward, Ella receives an apologetic message from him, and the FBI arrives looking for answers.
Ella does not appear to have known what her husband was doing. The series presents her as being blindsided by the investigation rather than as an accomplice. Showrunner Vivian Lin similarly described Ella as someone whose life is abruptly destroyed by her husband’s criminal charges.
David, meanwhile, does not remain behind to defend himself. He disappears and becomes a fugitive.
David’s Crimes Cost Teagan and Ella Almost Everything
The financial investigation immediately changes the lives of David’s wife and daughter. The money that once supported their comfortable California existence is no longer available to them, forcing Ella and Teagan to leave and begin again in Ella’s hometown.
That is how Teagan ends up at Easton Prep. The move initially feels like a punishment to her. She has lost her home, her old rowing program and much of the future she had planned. Easton does not even have a girls’ rowing team, which ultimately pushes her toward becoming the coxswain of the boys’ varsity crew. Netflix itself describes David’s family scandal as the event that “capsized” Teagan’s promising rowing future.
The scandal follows her to school as well. Teagan initially tries to conceal what happened, but Britney discovers the story and publicly exposes her father’s crimes at a party. It is one of the reasons Teagan struggles to trust people after arriving in Eagle’s Cove. She is being judged for something she did not do while still privately missing the father responsible for putting her in that position.
That contradiction becomes an important part of Teagan’s relationship with David. She is angry with him, but the lessons he taught her as a rower remain deeply ingrained in her. Even after he disappears, she continues to draw on things he taught her when she needs to push herself physically and mentally.
Ella has an equally complicated response. She is furious about what David has done to their family, yet she is also grieving the life and marriage she thought she had. Eventually, she reaches a point where she leaves David a message telling him that she no longer wants to allow his absence to control her life.
Was David Actually Innocent?
No. Crew Girl does not end with a twist revealing that David was framed. The first episodes naturally leave some uncertainty because Teagan and Ella do not know the full story themselves. By the finale, however, David’s own actions make it clear that there was genuine criminal activity behind the investigation. When he finally resurfaces, he talks about information connected to his past financial dealings that he believes could still provide something for his family. The finale treats the embezzlement and illegal financial schemes as crimes David was involved in, rather than accusations that will ultimately be disproved.
His return also gives Teagan the chance to see him as a flawed parent rather than simply the mysterious fugitive who vanished from her life.
What Happens to David Tao in the Crew Girl Finale?
David secretly returns around the time of the Haverford Cup. Despite being wanted by authorities, he wants to see Teagan compete. His reappearance comes at an especially complicated moment because Teagan is already dealing with problems involving the Easton crew and the most important race of their season.
David stays long enough to watch his daughter. After Easton finishes second at the Haverford Cup, he meets Teagan again and praises what she has accomplished. He also acknowledges Ella’s role in raising her during his absence.
Most importantly, David finally stops running.
FBI agents are waiting for him, and David peacefully surrenders. The season therefore does not resolve his legal case or tell us what sentence he might receive, but it does bring the fugitive chapter of his story to an end. Instead of escaping again, he accepts that he has to face the consequences of what he did.
That resolution also matters more for Teagan than it does for David. Throughout Season 1, she is forced to live inside the fallout of her father’s choices. By the finale, David can no longer remain an unseen presence controlling her future. Teagan has built a new life, found her own crew and rediscovered a path forward in rowing.
David Tao’s fraud may be the reason Teagan loses her old life at the beginning of Crew Girl, but the season ends by showing that it does not have to define the life she builds next.
