Netflix’s ‘Crew Girl’ builds its teen drama around one newcomer stepping into a boat full of boys who have very little interest in being led by her. Miku Martineau stars as Teagan Tao, a gifted 16-year-old rower whose life in California collapses after a scandal involving her family. Teagan and her mother relocate to the fictional East Coast town of Eagle’s Cove, where she enrolls at prestigious Easton Prep and discovers the school has no girls’ rowing team. Her compromise is becoming coxswain for the chaotic boys’ varsity crew, putting her between arrogant captain Josh Regis and underestimated rower Cam Dillinger both competitively and romantically. The eight-episode series also stars Jessica Paré, Thomas Cadrot, Connor Paton, Jude Wilson, Vincent Muller, Riley Davis, Connor Wong, Jarrett Carlington and Niall Matter.

Miku Martineau as Teagan Tao

Miku Martineau plays Teagan Tao, the rower forced to reinvent herself as a coxswain. Teagan arrives at Easton already carrying the humiliation of a family scandal, so joining an all-boys team that does not particularly want her is not exactly the gentle fresh start her mother had hoped for. Her problem is also more specific than simply missing her old life. Teagan is a single sculler who wants to row herself, while a coxswain has to steer, strategize and make other rowers perform as one unit.

Martineau previously appeared in projects including ‘Kate,’ ‘Bet’ and ‘Star Trek: Section 31.’ She described ‘Crew Girl’ as a coming-of-age story built around drama, rowing, friendship, romance and family, which fits Teagan’s unusually crowded first year at Easton. The role makes her both athlete and outsider. She understands the water better than many of the boys challenging her authority, but knowledge does not automatically make them willing to follow her.

Sam Braun as Josh Regis

Sam Braun plays Josh Regis, Easton Prep’s confident and frequently arrogant crew captain. Josh represents the established hierarchy Teagan disrupts as soon as she joins the boat. He is used to having status within both the school and the rowing program, and Teagan’s arrival gives him someone who is willing to challenge him rather than simply accept the way the team already operates.

Braun has appeared in ‘Time Cut,’ ‘Bad Genius’ and ‘The Marshmallow Experiment.’ His chemistry with Martineau matters because Josh is also one side of the season’s central love triangle. That romantic possibility complicates what would otherwise be a straightforward captain-versus-coxswain rivalry. Teagan can be irritated by Josh and attracted to him at the same time, which gives their competition much more energy than a standard sports feud.

Kyle Clark as Cam Dillinger

Kyle Clark plays Cam Dillinger, the quieter and more overlooked member of the team who becomes Josh’s romantic rival. Netflix describes Cam as fiercely determined and unwilling to remain underestimated, placing him in a different position from the already confident Josh. Where Josh represents the existing power structure of Easton crew, Cam has more in common with Teagan’s need to prove that other people’s assumptions about her are incomplete.

Clark’s previous credits include ‘The Baby-Sitters Club,’ ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between.’ Cam’s relationship with Teagan develops through the team rather than outside it, so the love triangle cannot be neatly separated from rowing. Every change in the boat’s hierarchy affects the relationships around it. That is why the show’s “Team Josh or Team Cam” question is tied as much to how the boys treat Teagan as it is to conventional romantic chemistry.

Jessica Paré as Ella Tao and Thomas Cadrot as Coach Matt Hayden

Jessica Paré plays Ella Tao, Teagan’s mother, while Thomas Cadrot appears as Coach Matt Hayden, the adult responsible for Easton’s rowing program. Ella relocates with Teagan after the family scandal and becomes one of the main links between the teenager’s new school life and the trouble she thought she had left behind. The mother-daughter relationship is not merely background because Netflix specifically identifies Teagan’s growing family problems as part of the pressure she carries while trying to rebuild her athletic future.

Paré is best known internationally for ‘Mad Men’ and ‘SEAL Team.’ Cadrot’s credits include ‘Scream VI,’ ‘So Help Me Todd’ and ‘Family Law.’ Coach Hayden becomes important because a coxswain does not succeed through individual athletic ability alone. Teagan has to earn enough institutional trust to be placed in charge of a boat full of strong personalities, making Hayden one of the adults capable of either legitimizing her leadership or making an already difficult situation worse.

Who Else Is on the Easton Prep Crew?

Netflix has filled the boat with a larger group of young Canadian actors rather than treating Josh and Cam as the entire team. Connor Paton plays Ryder Regis, while Jude Wilson plays Bronson “Baloo” Garner, Vincent Muller plays Damon Quaid, Riley Davis plays Noah Bainbridge, Connor Wong plays Perry Chou, and Jarrett Carlington plays Chris “Crab Catcher” Padmore. Netflix’s official cast announcement confirms all six characters as part of the wider ensemble surrounding Teagan.

That larger crew is essential to the premise because Teagan’s real challenge is not convincing two attractive boys to like her. A coxswain has to understand the personalities, strengths and weaknesses of everyone in the boat. The dysfunctional nature of Easton’s varsity crew means each rower creates a different leadership problem, allowing the sports storyline to function as more than decoration around the romance.

Niall Matter also plays Richard Regis, adding another member of the Regis family to the story. His presence gives Josh and Ryder a family connection beyond the school and makes the Regis name part of Easton’s broader social structure. The combination of teammates, parents and coaches gives ‘Crew Girl’ enough interpersonal material to keep Teagan’s new life from becoming only a three-person romance.

Crew Girl’s Cast Makes the Rowing Team the Center of the Drama

The smartest casting choice in ‘Crew Girl’ is that the central love triangle grows directly from the sports story. Teagan does not meet Josh and Cam through unrelated school parties and then happen to row with them occasionally. She has to make both men trust her judgment in a boat where a bad decision affects the entire crew. That naturally turns attraction, jealousy, competitiveness and leadership into versions of the same conflict.

Martineau, Braun and Clark also entered the production with a larger ensemble that already had strong Canadian connections. Braun said many of the actors knew one another before filming, which helped create the chemistry viewers see within Easton’s crew. ‘Crew Girl’ may begin with Teagan as the outsider, but the series ultimately depends on whether this group can become believable as teammates. The romance gets the trailer attention, yet the cast works because every relationship eventually has to survive the same test: getting into the boat and functioning together.
