“Ted Lasso” Season 4 reaches its finale with AFC Richmond already celebrating what the Lady Greyhounds have accomplished, but the club itself is facing a much more uncertain future. Mae Green’s death hangs over everyone, Zelda Southport is close to gaining control of Richmond, Roy Kent has a major career decision to make, and Ted is beginning to realize that returning to England has changed more than his professional life.

Episode 10 brings those stories together by making change its central idea. Some characters leave familiar roles, others finally commit to the lives they have been avoiding, and Mae manages to influence AFC Richmond even after her death. Most importantly, Zelda’s takeover does not succeed, but stopping her requires one final surprise from Mae.

Mae’s Funeral Brings Richmond Together

The finale begins in the aftermath of Mae’s death, with friends and familiar faces gathering at the Crown & Anchor to remember her. Baz, Jeremy and Paul are struggling with the loss of a woman who became almost a parental figure to them, while Ted, Michelle and Henry are also there. Niamh and Siobhan eventually perform “The Parting Glass,” turning the wake into a fitting celebration of someone whose life had become inseparable from Richmond.

Mae’s death also affects Henry more deeply than Ted initially realizes. Henry tells Ted that he wishes Mae were still around to help him with his homework, before asking how Ted’s own father died. Ted repeats the explanation Henry has apparently heard from his grandmother, but it is clear that he is uncomfortable hiding the truth from his son.

Ted later admits to Beard that he gave Henry an evasive answer. By the end of the episode, he returns to the subject and tells Henry that there is something he needs to explain about how his grandfather really died. The conversation itself continues away from the audience, but Ted’s decision matters because he finally chooses honesty instead of using discomfort as a reason to avoid a painful subject.

Roy Gets a Huge Offer From Chelsea

Roy and Keeley begin the episode adjusting to the reality that they are going to have a baby. Keeley’s pregnancy symptoms are already making themselves known, while Roy is excited but also increasingly nervous about becoming a father. His personal life is moving forward quickly when another enormous change arrives through a phone call from his agent.

Chelsea want Roy to become their new head coach. The offer immediately affects him because Chelsea is not simply another football club in his life. It is the club where he spent some of the most important years of his playing career, and returning there as manager would allow him to revisit a place connected to both his success and some of his deepest insecurities.

Before making his professional decision public, Roy turns to the Diamond Dogs. Nate also happens to be visiting Richmond and reveals that he is now working with the Polish national team, while he and Jade have a daughter named Athena. Roy then tells Ted, Beard, Higgins, Nate and Alice that Keeley is pregnant and admits that he is frightened he might not be a good father.

Their advice does not magically remove that fear, but it helps Roy understand that uncertainty is part of becoming a parent. Alice offers perhaps the most important warning when she tells him not to disappear simply because he feels inadequate. That advice applies to much more than fatherhood and quietly prepares Roy for the career decision he eventually makes.

The Lady Greyhounds Finally Fill Nelson Road

While the ownership crisis grows in the background, Richmond’s women’s team prepares for its final match of the season against Crystal Palace. Keeley revisits an earlier promotional idea and turns footage of Rebecca and the players into a much more entertaining campaign designed to get supporters into Nelson Road.

This time, it works. Nelson Road is genuinely packed for the Lady Greyhounds, which gives the season one of its most satisfying football-related payoffs. Earlier attempts to manufacture a sellout had exposed how far the women’s side still had to go, but the finale shows supporters turning up because they actually want to watch the team.

Shannon Stone also makes her first start for her childhood club. Ted’s pre-match speech acknowledges Mae, telling the players that if there is one person who would have wanted to be there, it is her. The match itself becomes less important than what the crowd represents, because Richmond’s women’s project has finally become something with a real audience and identity of its own.

Does Zelda Take Over AFC Richmond?

No, Zelda does not take control of AFC Richmond. For a few minutes, however, she is convinced that she has succeeded.

At the shareholders’ meeting, Zelda makes her dramatic entrance and confirms that she was the person secretly buying Richmond shares throughout the season. Hugo Riddles had been working for her, approaching supporters and buying their stakes while Higgins and Rebecca became distracted by the possibility that Rupert was behind the scheme.

Zelda believes the final piece has fallen into place when the Milk Sisters agree to sell. She announces that she now owns more than 50 percent of AFC Richmond and therefore has a controlling interest in the club. Her real goal is not Richmond’s women’s team at all. She wants ownership of a Premier League men’s club because she believes owning one is the only way to force powerful figures in football to take her seriously.

The problem is that Hugo has finally had enough of Zelda. She ordered him to secure the Milk Sisters’ shares rather than treating him with any respect, and he decides to betray her. Instead of selling those shares to Zelda, Hugo arranges for them to go to Rebecca.

That leaves Rebecca and Zelda level at 49 percent each. The remaining 2 percent belongs to Mae Green, which means the woman who is no longer in the room suddenly becomes the person who decides AFC Richmond’s future.

What Happens to Mae’s AFC Richmond Shares?

Mae gives her entire 2 percent ownership stake to Rebecca in her will. That takes Rebecca from 49 percent to a controlling majority and ends Zelda’s attempt to seize AFC Richmond.

It is an especially fitting final act for Mae because she had spent years representing the supporters who saw Richmond as something more important than an investment. She knew someone was trying to collect shares and had already refused to cooperate. Before her death, she amended her will so that her stake would return directly to Rebecca.

Mae even leaves a characteristically blunt message for anyone trying to take the club away from her. The wording is unmistakably Mae, but the meaning is simple: she trusted Rebecca to protect Richmond and wanted her shares used for exactly that purpose.

Zelda accepts that she has been beaten, although Rebecca does not force her completely out of the club. Instead, Rebecca chooses to keep her close, recognizing that Zelda’s nature is unlikely to change but refusing to let Zelda’s behavior change who she is. Rebecca retains control of AFC Richmond, while Zelda remains a shareholder without the power she expected to have.

Who Gets the Crown and Anchor After Mae’s Death?

Mae’s will has another surprise. She leaves the Crown & Anchor to Baz Primrose, Jeremy Blumenthal and Paul La Fleur, the three supporters who have spent years occupying their familiar place in the pub.

Mae’s only real instruction is that they should not ruin it. Beneath the humor, it is a touching conclusion to one of the show’s longest-running relationships because Mae is effectively handing her community over to the people who spent years helping create it.

The closing montage shows the Crown & Anchor continuing rather than disappearing with Mae. The owners may have changed, but the pub remains what it always was: a gathering place for Richmond supporters and an unofficial extension of the club itself.

Does Roy Kent Leave AFC Richmond?

Yes. Roy accepts Chelsea’s offer and will become their head coach next season.

When Roy tells Rebecca, her first reaction is anger. She realizes that Chelsea’s interest explains why Roy had not signed the new Richmond contract, and she accuses him of turning his back on a club that gave him the opportunity to become a manager. Roy explains that Chelsea wanted him immediately, but he refused to leave until Richmond’s season was finished.

The more important part of the conversation comes when Roy explains why he is taking the risk. Chelsea is part of his history, and he believes he deserves to allow something good to happen rather than automatically assuming he will fail. That is a major step for a character who has spent much of the series convinced that happiness will eventually be taken away from him.

Rebecca eventually understands. She tells Roy that Richmond will always be there if Chelsea does not work out, and the two part on affectionate terms. Ted also congratulates Roy when he learns the news, making it clear that this is not being treated as a betrayal but as Roy moving into the next stage of his career.

Does Ted Return as AFC Richmond Men’s Manager?

Roy’s departure creates another major opening, and Ted wastes very little time noticing it. After Rebecca reflects on Mae’s death and talks about how laughing, hurting, failing and recovering are all signs of being alive, she asks what everyone is waiting for.

Ted initially jokes that he has not said anything yet, but then reveals what is on his mind. He asks Rebecca if they can discuss her newly vacant manager position.

The implication is clear: Ted is interested in taking over AFC Richmond’s men’s team again now that Roy is leaving for Chelsea. Season 4 brought Ted back to England to coach the women, but his work with that team has also helped Alice grow into a much more confident coach. The closing sequence suggests another restructuring is coming, with Ted moving toward the men’s job while Alice’s increased responsibility with the Lady Greyhounds becomes part of Richmond’s future.

It also solves one of Ted’s personal problems. Earlier in the episode, he promises Henry that he will rearrange his life so he does not miss as many of his son’s games next season. Ted is no longer behaving as though coaching and fatherhood have to exist on opposite sides of the Atlantic. He is trying to build a life in London that has space for both.

Do Rebecca and Matthijs Get Married?

Rebecca also decides to stop waiting for certainty. After everything that happens with Mae, Zelda and Roy, she realizes how much of her life has been shaped by worrying about what might go wrong.

When Matthijs arrives at her office, Rebecca abruptly asks him to marry her. She admits that she did enjoy being married before, but she had simply been married to the wrong person. With Matthijs, she no longer wants fear about the future to prevent her from living in the present.

Matthijs accepts the proposal. Their engagement gives Rebecca a very different ending from the woman introduced at the beginning of the series, when her personal life was still controlled by anger toward Rupert and the damage left by their marriage.

What Does the Season 4 Ending Mean?

The title idea of “being alive” becomes explicit in Rebecca and Ted’s final conversation. Rebecca realizes that life is messy precisely because people care, take risks, lose things and continue moving forward. Mae’s death could have made everyone retreat into fear, but the finale instead uses it as a reason for them to stop postponing their lives.

Roy takes the Chelsea job even though he might fail. Rebecca proposes to Matthijs even though another marriage could hurt her. Ted tells Henry the truth about his grandfather and begins considering another major coaching change. Mae leaves the pub to the people she loves and ensures Rebecca remains in control of Richmond.

The final montage keeps Mae’s presence alive through her words while showing everyone continuing with their lives. That is the real point of the ending. Mae is gone, but Richmond does not freeze in place because of the loss. The Crown & Anchor continues, the club survives Zelda’s challenge, new coaches step forward, relationships deepen, and Ted once again finds himself looking toward a new beginning.

Season 4 therefore does not end like a farewell to AFC Richmond. It ends with several doors opening at once, leaving Ted, Alice, Roy, Keeley, Rebecca and the rest of the club in very different positions for whatever comes next.
