Roy Kent Leaving AFC Richmond

Roy Kent has already experienced almost every version of life at AFC Richmond. He arrived in “Ted Lasso” as the club’s aging captain, retired from playing, reluctantly entered television punditry, returned as a coach, and eventually took Ted’s old job with the men’s team. Season 4 finds him in a position that once seemed like his natural destination, but the show has quietly introduced another question about his future.

Roy’s AFC Richmond contract expires at the end of the season. That might sound like ordinary football business if the show had mentioned it once, but Season 4 has deliberately brought the issue up more than once without resolving it. With the finale approaching, his future at Richmond has become one of the season’s remaining character questions.

Roy Kent’s contract is expiring

Season 4 first draws attention to Roy’s contractual situation earlier in the season and later returns to the issue, making it difficult to dismiss as a throwaway detail. His deal is due to expire at the end of the year, and the fact that no extension has been announced inside the story creates obvious uncertainty around what happens next.

The timing is particularly interesting because Roy begins Season 4 still connected to the men’s side of AFC Richmond while Ted takes charge of the women’s team. Coach Beard initially continues working alongside Roy before leaving to reunite with Ted and help the Lady Greyhounds, which puts Roy in a more isolated professional position than before.

That shift gives the contract storyline more weight. Roy is still part of Richmond, but he is no longer part of the same coaching partnership that defined the previous phase of his career. An expiring deal gives the finale an easy way to change his role again without making his departure feel sudden.

Why hasn’t Roy signed a new Richmond deal?

“Ted Lasso” has not provided a definitive answer, and there is no clear indication that Rebecca wants him out. The uncertainty seems to be less about whether Richmond values Roy and more about whether Roy himself knows what he wants the next stage of his life to look like.

That distinction matters because Roy’s story since retiring has repeatedly focused on what happens when football stops being enough on its own. Coaching gave him purpose after his playing career ended, but it did not automatically solve the personal problems he carried with him. Season 4 pushes him to confront those issues more directly.

His renewed relationship with Keeley is central to that change. After spending much of the season apart, the two finally reconnect romantically, and Episode 9 raises the stakes again when Keeley learns she is pregnant and tells Roy. His response makes it clear that he sees the news as something positive rather than something he wants to run away from.

Could Roy leave Richmond because of Keeley and the baby?

It is possible, but the show has not confirmed that direction. Becoming a father gives Roy a reason to reconsider how much of his life he wants professional football to consume, especially now that his relationship with Keeley has finally found some stability.

At the same time, leaving football completely would not necessarily fit Roy either. After retiring as a player, he tried to distance himself from the game and eventually realized how much he missed being around it. Returning to Richmond’s coaching staff became one of the most important steps in his development, so walking away from the club altogether could feel too extreme.

A more likely possibility is that the contract storyline is forcing Roy to make an active decision rather than allowing his career to continue by default. Choosing to renew with Richmond because he genuinely wants the job would mean something different from simply staying because it is familiar. Likewise, deciding that he wants another role would show that Roy is finally making choices based on the life he wants rather than reacting to circumstances around him.

Roy leaving Richmond would not mean Brett Goldstein is leaving Ted Lasso

There is also an important difference between Roy leaving his current Richmond job and Brett Goldstein leaving the series. There has been no official announcement that Goldstein is departing “Ted Lasso” after Season 4, so claims that Roy is definitely being written out would be premature.

Even if Roy allows his current contract to expire, the character could remain connected to Keeley, Rebecca, Ted, and the wider Richmond world. The series has repeatedly kept characters involved even after their professional circumstances changed, and Roy himself has already moved through several different roles without disappearing from the story.

Retirement did not end his arc, and neither did his time away from coaching. Each change simply pushed him into a new version of the character. The expiring contract could be setting up another transition rather than a full exit.

Could Roy take a different role at AFC Richmond?

That possibility should not be ruled out. Season 4 has changed Richmond’s structure considerably, with Ted leading the women’s team while Roy remains tied to the men’s setup. As the Lady Greyhounds become more important to the club, Richmond effectively has two major football operations developing under the same banner.

A new contract could therefore be about redefining Roy’s position rather than deciding whether he stays or goes. He could continue leading the men’s team, move into a broader football role, or take on a position that gives him more room for his personal life with Keeley.

The finale could also leave the question partly open if the series intends to continue beyond Season 4. That would allow Roy’s decision to become part of a larger story rather than something the show needs to resolve immediately.

Is Roy Kent actually leaving AFC Richmond?

As of the end of Season 4 Episode 9, no. Roy has not resigned, signed with another club, or announced that he plans to leave Richmond, and there is no official indication that Brett Goldstein is exiting the series.

What the show has done is place Roy at a crossroads. His relationship with Keeley has finally stabilized, they are preparing for a child, his old coaching partnership with Ted and Beard has changed, and the job he inherited after Ted originally left Richmond is no longer something he can assume will continue forever.

That makes his contract less interesting as a question of whether AFC Richmond wants Roy and more interesting as a question of what Roy now wants for himself. Season 4 has already given him a second chance with Keeley, and the finale may use his expiring contract to reveal whether the next stage of Roy Kent’s life still happens on the AFC Richmond touchline or somewhere else entirely.
