BBC’s The Reluctant Vampire spends its first season turning a simple identity crisis into an increasingly complicated family secret. Lenny Rush plays Valentine, or Val, a teenager raised as the heir to a vampire family who discovers that his inability to behave like the rest of his relatives has a straightforward explanation: he is actually human. His mother Valeeta knows the truth, but his father Victor has spent years believing Val will eventually grow into the vampire prince he expects him to be.

That conflict reaches its breaking point in Episode 6, when Val’s initiation can no longer be postponed. By the finale, keeping his human identity hidden is not simply about avoiding awkward questions. Val has to perform a rite that he physically and emotionally cannot complete, while his increasingly suspicious brother Vernon finally has proof that something about him is different.

The ending appears ready to force Val into a confession, but the series finds a much more fitting comic escape. Victor does not discover that Val is human. Instead, he finishes the season more convinced than ever that his eldest son is an unusually gifted vampire.

Why Val’s initiation becomes impossible to fake

Val enters the finale knowing that his double life has reached its limit. His initiation requires him to demonstrate that he is ready to take his place among the vampires, and the ceremony includes a traditional feeding rite that a human Val has no intention of completing.

Valeeta initially looks for another way out and brings in celebrated problem solver Siegfried Henge. His elaborate scheme is supposed to create enough confusion around the ceremony for Val to appear successful without anyone realizing what has happened. Predictably, that solution falls apart before it can rescue him.

With his options disappearing, Val reaches a far more serious conclusion. If Valeeta turns him into a vampire before the ceremony, he could genuinely complete the initiation and Victor would never need to learn the truth.

For Valeeta, however, that would solve the family’s problem by erasing the identity Val has only just begun to understand. She reminds him that being human has opened an entire life that was previously unavailable to him, including ordinary friendships and experiences outside the castle. She has had the ability to change him for years and deliberately chose not to because she came to love him as he was.

Val nevertheless persuades her that he cannot bear the thought of humiliating Victor and destroying his father’s faith in him. Valeeta apparently agrees, leaving Val to believe that his final hours as a human have arrived.

Does Valeeta really turn Val into a vampire?

No. This is one of the finale’s most important reveals because Val goes into the initiation believing Valeeta has transformed him, but she has actually deceived him.

Valeeta cannot bring herself to take his humanity away. Her hope is that if Val genuinely believes he has become a vampire, confidence might carry him through the ceremony. It is a very Valeeta solution to the problem: loving, desperate and not especially practical.

The deception also clarifies what the season has ultimately been saying about Val. His problem was never that he needed to become more like the family around him. His journey has been about accepting that being different does not make his place in that family less real. That lesson is tested immediately, because the initiation contains another surprise that Valeeta could not have planned for.

Does Vernon know Val is human?

Yes. While Victor remains unaware, Vernon has figured out the truth before the ceremony and directly confronts Val about it.

The evidence is Val’s reflection. Vampires are not supposed to have one, and Vernon has seen enough to understand what that means. He tells Val that he knows he is human and makes it clear that everyone else is about to find out as well.

Vernon then makes the ceremony even more difficult by producing his own “initiation gift.” The human chosen for Val’s test is Gertie, the village girl who has become his closest friend and helped him discover what an ordinary human life might look like.

Whatever confidence Val gained from believing Valeeta had changed him disappears when he realizes who is in front of him. Gertie is not an anonymous part of some ancient ceremony. She is the person who taught him that he did not have to become what everybody else expected. The situation therefore forces Val to choose between protecting his cover and protecting the friendship that has come to define his new life.

Does Victor discover Val is human?

No. Victor reaches the end of Season 1 without learning that Val is human, even though the truth comes remarkably close to emerging.

Chaos during the initiation gives Val an opportunity to get Gertie away from the ceremony. During the aftermath, Valeeta also admits that she never really transformed him. Val is still exactly what he was before: a human boy who has been raised by vampires.

Gertie eventually regains consciousness, and Val briefly appears ready to explain everything. Once again, however, circumstances interrupt the confession. Gertie still does not receive the full story about Val’s family and the castle.

The escape becomes even stranger when their earlier game of “Simon Says” unexpectedly saves Val. As Val gives Gertie instructions using the familiar rules of the game, she follows them. Victor arrives at exactly the wrong, or from Val’s perspective right, moment and interprets what he is seeing as something completely different.

What is Zymonzes?

Earlier in the finale, the family discusses Zymonzes, an almost forgotten ability supposedly mastered by the legendary King Valkar. It allows a vampire to command humans and make them obey instructions.

Victor watches Gertie doing what Val tells her and immediately concludes that his son possesses the same rare power. Because Val and Gertie are simply playing “Simon Says,” neither of them initially understands why Victor is so overwhelmed by what he has witnessed.

The misunderstanding becomes complete when Victor asks for another demonstration and Gertie continues playing along. From Victor’s perspective, Val has not failed his initiation at all. He has revealed an ability far more impressive than the conventional test he was expected to pass. Instead of discovering that his son is human, Victor becomes extraordinarily proud of him.

What happens to Val and Gertie?

Val and Gertie’s friendship survives the finale, although Val still has not told her everything. Their relationship remains one of the clearest bridges between his two lives, and the closing scenes return them to the ordinary human experiences Val has become fascinated by.

Their plan to go swimming is treated with the same awkward comedy that has defined their friendship throughout the season. More importantly, Gertie continues to give Val a place where he can explore being human without the expectations attached to being Victor’s heir.

Val therefore gets to keep both parts of his life for now. He remains connected to the family he loves while continuing his friendship with Gertie outside the castle. The problem is that keeping those worlds separate has become even more complicated.

What does the ending mean for Val and Vernon?

The finale solves Val’s immediate initiation crisis but deliberately creates another problem. The vampire community now believes Val possesses Zymonzes, meaning expectations surrounding him are likely to become even greater. Victor is already boasting about his first-born son’s extraordinary ability. Val has escaped being exposed as a human only by accidentally constructing an even harder supernatural identity to maintain.

Vernon is another unresolved threat. Unlike Victor, he knows Val has a reflection and therefore knows that the official explanation cannot be the entire truth. The finale does not erase his jealousy or his knowledge, leaving him in an ideal position to challenge Val again.

That is why the ending works without a conventional cliffhanger. Val finishes Season 1 in roughly the place he wanted to be: still human, still part of his family and still able to see Gertie. Yet the lie surrounding him has become considerably larger. Victor does not discover Val is human. For now, he believes something much more exciting – that his son may be one of the most remarkable vampires their family has produced.
