Netflix’s Not a Stranger spends much of its first season placing viewers inside Funda’s increasingly uncertain perspective. Her memory becomes unreliable, her behavior begins to worry the people around her, and Nazlı, who initially enters the household as someone Funda trusts, becomes indispensable to the family. The finale changes the meaning of much of what came before by revealing that Funda’s decline was not happening in isolation.
While Funda finally accepts that she needs professional help, Kemal begins looking more closely into Nazlı’s past. What he discovers explains her connection to İlker, her troubling history as a nurse, and the real reason Funda seemed to become worse whenever Nazlı was close to her. The season ends without fully removing Nazlı from the family, leaving Funda’s recovery and Nazlı’s fixation on the life around İlker and Mavi as the show’s biggest unresolved conflict.

Why Does Funda Go to the Hospital?
The finale begins with Funda reaching a point where she knows she cannot continue as she has been. Instead of insisting that everything is under control, she asks İlker for help and agrees to enter a treatment facility.
Leaving Mavi is especially difficult for her. Funda feels guilty about her recent behavior and believes that İlker and their daughter may be better off without her for a while. Nazlı remains behind to help care for Mavi, which is particularly significant in hindsight because Nazlı has already become deeply attached to the role she occupies inside the family.

Funda’s decision to seek treatment appears painful at first, but it ultimately gives her something she has not had for a long time: distance from Nazlı.
Why Does Funda Get Better So Quickly?
After six weeks in treatment, Funda tells her doctor that she actually began feeling significantly better only a few days after arriving. She feels more like herself again, and even the doctor acknowledges that her improvement happened unusually quickly.
The timing matters because Kemal’s investigation reveals what had been happening before Funda entered treatment. Nazlı had repeatedly prepared drinks for her, including chamomile and mint tea, around several occasions when Funda later complained about physical discomfort, confusion or gaps in her memory.
The finale deliberately connects those earlier moments. Kemal realizes that Funda’s behavior on the night of her gallery opening was not simply the result of drinking too much, as people had assumed. He believes Nazlı had been interfering with Funda’s condition for some time.
That does not mean every emotion or difficulty Funda experienced throughout the season was manufactured. She had real pressures in her marriage, career and personal life. However, the finale makes it clear that Nazlı was making those struggles substantially worse and encouraging Funda and everyone around her to believe that Funda herself was the sole problem.
What Does Kemal Discover About Nazlı?
Kemal becomes suspicious because Funda’s problems seem to intensify after Nazlı enters her life. He starts tracing Nazlı’s history and eventually contacts someone from the hospital where she previously worked.
Nazlı had told people that she left nursing following an accident. The truth is different. She had been dismissed from the hospital after an incident involving an infant in her care. According to the former colleague Kemal speaks with, Nazlı administered too much sedating medication while trying to calm a suffering child, leading to a serious medical emergency.
The hospital handled the matter quietly after the child recovered, and Nazlı subsequently left the profession. Nazlı later tells Kemal that she had only wanted to comfort the baby and insists that her intentions had been compassionate.

Kemal also learns that Nazlı had been pregnant in the past and lost the pregnancy following an accident. The series presents that experience as an important part of her history, although it does not establish that İlker was the father.
What Was Nazlı Doing to Funda?
Kemal eventually confronts Nazlı and directly accuses her of deliberately altering Funda’s condition.
The finale revisits several earlier scenes involving drinks Nazlı prepared for Funda. Funda had complained about migraines, body pain, dizziness and difficulty remembering what had happened. The flashbacks make clear that these moments were not included by accident.
The exact substance Nazlı used is never identified. The series therefore does not provide enough information to name a particular medication. What the finale does confirm is the larger deception: Nazlı was secretly interfering with Funda’s drinks in a way that left her confused and made her behavior appear increasingly unstable.
That also explains why Funda improves so rapidly after entering treatment. Once she is away from Nazlı and the household environment, those unexplained episodes largely disappear.
Did Nazlı Do the Same Thing to Mavi?
No evidence in the finale suggests that Nazlı interfered with Mavi in the same way. Kemal asks Nazlı about Mavi directly during their confrontation. Nazlı immediately denies it and insists that she would never deliberately put Mavi at risk because she genuinely loves her.
The episode does not subsequently contradict that denial. Nazlı’s attachment to Mavi is one of the most sincere parts of her otherwise deceptive behavior, although the reason for that attachment becomes unsettling once she finally explains what she believes the family represents to her.

Why Did Nazlı Want Funda’s Family?
Nazlı’s connection to İlker began before his relationship with Funda. Episode 1 establishes that İlker and Nazlı had a one-night encounter in the past, something İlker initially tries to describe as insignificant. For Nazlı, however, it clearly meant much more.
During her confrontation with Kemal, she finally says that she was there before Funda and that the life surrounding İlker should have belonged to her. She sees the home, Mavi and the happiness Funda built as a version of the future she believes she was supposed to have.
Her lost pregnancy adds another layer to that fixation, but the finale does not state that the pregnancy resulted from her encounter with İlker. What matters is the emotional connection Nazlı has created in her own mind between what she lost and the family she later found herself inside.
Mavi therefore becomes more than the child Nazlı was hired to care for. She represents the motherhood and family life Nazlı believes she missed.
Does Kemal Tell Funda the Truth?
Not before the season ends. Kemal now knows considerably more about Nazlı than either Funda or İlker appears to know, but his confrontation with her takes an unexpected turn. Nazlı recognizes that Kemal still has feelings for Funda and uses that knowledge against him.
She points out that Funda chose İlker over Kemal but suggests that circumstances can change if he is patient. Nazlı effectively tries to turn Kemal’s unresolved feelings into a reason for him not to interfere with her own plans.
The episode does not explicitly show Kemal agreeing to such an arrangement. More importantly, it also does not show him immediately telling Funda or İlker what he discovered. That silence leaves the truth dangerously contained between Kemal and Nazlı as Funda prepares to return to ordinary life.
What Does the Final Scene Mean?
By the end of the season, Funda is significantly healthier and considering leaving treatment. Her doctor tells her that the decision should be hers, while Kemal has already encouraged her to return home.
Nazlı, meanwhile, remains convinced that she belongs with İlker and Mavi. Her closing narration makes her state of mind unmistakable. She believes she deserves the family and that everything she has done has brought her to the place where she was always meant to be.
That is what makes the ending more complicated than a simple recovery story. Funda has begun to regain control of herself, but she does not yet understand the full reason she became so unwell. Nazlı has been discovered by Kemal, but she has not been removed from the household or exposed to the rest of the family.
Season 1 therefore closes with Funda moving toward recovery while the person who contributed to her decline remains close to the life Funda is hoping to reclaim. The central question is no longer whether something unusual has been happening to Funda. It is whether she will learn the truth before Nazlı succeeds in making herself a permanent part of the family.
