Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2 Ending Explained: What Happens to the Golem?

The mysteries running through Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2 gradually turn out to be parts of the same plan. The strange blue flowers, the Hate Sprites, the supposed ghost haunting Hawkins and the wooden creatures beneath the town all trace back to someone the Hawkins Investigators Club believed was gone for good.

By the final two episodes, Eleven discovers that Daniel Fischer survived the events of Season 1 in a disturbing form. His body remains trapped in the Upside Down, but his consciousness has found a way back into Hawkins through the plant life created by his serum. What first looked like a ghost is actually Daniel projecting himself through pollen, roots and eventually the creature the gang calls a Golem.

Daniel Fischer Is the Lich

The crucial revelation comes after the H.I.C. follows the Hate Sprites back to Daniel’s former laboratory. There, they discover several humanoid bodies formed from roots and plant material. Dustin initially treats them like fantasy monsters and calls them golems, but Eleven eventually sees what is actually controlling them.

While searching psychically for the Lich, Eleven realizes its mind is inside one of the golems even though its physical body is somewhere else. She then recognizes the consciousness behind it and tells the others the truth: Daniel is the Lich.

Episode 7 explains how this is possible. Daniel’s real body is still trapped in the Upside Down, while his serum allows him to control plants and project his mind through them. The ghostly figure the children have been chasing is therefore not Daniel’s spirit. It is his consciousness using Hawkins’ plant network as a substitute body.

Why Does Daniel Need Fear?

Daniel is trying to escape the Upside Down. The Hate Sprites and flowers have been harvesting fear from people throughout Hawkins. Dustin realizes earlier that the Lich has effectively turned the town into a “fear energy grid,” although the group initially does not know why Daniel needs so much power.

Episode 7 finally answers that question. Daniel is attempting to open another gate between Hawkins and the Upside Down. By Episode 8, the H.I.C. understands that he is frightening people to death because their fear provides the energy needed to finish forming the gate. Daniel even takes Mike because Eleven’s fear for him gives Daniel another powerful source of energy.

How Do They Stop the Golem?

Simply attacking Daniel’s Golem is not enough. His plant body is only one piece of a much larger system, and the unfinished gate continues receiving energy from the flowers and Hate Sprites spread around Hawkins. The H.I.C. therefore divides the problem into separate targets. One group goes after the Hate Sprites, while another destroys the flowers feeding energy into Daniel’s network. Eleven stays focused on Daniel and Mike.

The final piece comes from Mike himself. Daniel has been using Mike’s fear to strengthen the gate, but Eleven realizes that she cannot protect him in the usual way. Instead, she tells Mike that he is strong enough to protect himself. Mike controls his breathing and lets his fear subside. As he explains, when he breathes out, the fear leaves with it and Daniel loses the power he was taking from him.

At the same time, the others finish destroying Daniel’s flowers. Once those sources are gone, the energy network collapses and the gate never fully opens.

Does the Golem Die?

The Golem is defeated as an active threat, but the finale does not establish that Daniel Fischer’s real body dies. That distinction matters because the wooden creature fighting the H.I.C. is not Daniel’s original body. It is a plant-based vessel carrying his consciousness. Eleven has already confirmed that Daniel’s physical body remains in the Upside Down.

After the flowers and Hate Sprites are neutralized and the fear supply disappears, Daniel loses the power needed to maintain his plan. The Golem no longer threatens Hawkins and the new gate fails to open.

The ending therefore stops Daniel without necessarily killing him. As far as Season 2 reveals, his real body remains stranded on the other side.

Does the New Gate Open?

No. The H.I.C. stops the process before Daniel can complete the gate. The danger is particularly serious because the children know what would happen if it opened. They specifically mention Demogorgons, Demodogs and the Mind Flayer potentially gaining another route into Hawkins.

Destroying the flowers and cutting off Daniel’s fear supply prevents that scenario. By the time the group reunites, the crisis is over and Hawkins is once again unaware of how close it came to another Upside Down disaster.

The finale then returns the characters to ordinary life. Nikki and her mother are able to remain in Hawkins after her mother gets a biology teaching job at Hawkins High, while Mike finally asks Eleven to be his girlfriend.

The H.I.C. also receives unexpected recognition for uncovering the truth about William Dandridge and Samuel Hawkins. To everyone else in town, that historical investigation becomes their big achievement. The supernatural battle that actually saved Hawkins remains their secret.
