Nina Garcia Is Still a Project Runway Judge, So Why Is She Barely in Season 22?

Project Runway Season 22 officially brought back a familiar judging lineup: Heidi Klum, Law Roach and longtime franchise fixture Nina Garcia, with Christian Siriano mentoring the designers and Tyra Banks added in a recurring capacity. Watching the season itself tells a more complicated story. Through Episode 6, Nina has been absent from the judging panel far more often than her “returning judge” billing would suggest. She has not officially quit the show, and Freeform still lists her as a Season 22 judge and executive producer. More importantly, neither Nina nor the network has publicly provided a confirmed reason for the repeated absences.

That leaves viewers with a real question but not yet a dramatic answer. Claims that Nina has walked away because she dislikes the new format, has been demoted, or is feuding with the production are speculation unless somebody involved with the show confirms them.

Nina Garcia Was Officially Announced as a Returning Judge

Freeform’s Season 22 publicity could hardly be clearer about Nina’s formal position. Its May cast announcement said that Heidi Klum, Law Roach and Nina Garcia would return as judges, while the June trailer announcement used the same language. Tyra Banks, by contrast, was specifically identified as a recurring judge, signaling from the outset that she would appear only during part of the season.

Nina’s role is even deeper behind the scenes. Freeform’s official series page lists her among the show’s executive producers, alongside Heidi and other members of the production team. Nothing in the network’s current material indicates that she has resigned from either role.

That is why her disappearance from so many runways has been more noticeable than Tyra’s eventual departure. Tyra’s limited run was advertised. Nina’s limited screen presence was not.

Which Season 22 Episodes Has Nina Garcia Missed?

Nina appears during the Season 22 premiere but is absent from much of the run that follows.

Episode 2 places guest judge Ice Spice in Nina’s chair. Reality Blurred noted her absence at the time rather than reporting any official explanation. Episode 3 again proceeds without Nina, with Ciara joining the panel.

The pattern continues in Episode 4. While the designers work on animal-inspired looks for celebrity models, Nina is again missing from the actual judging shown in the episode. Episode 5’s paper-towel challenge also goes ahead without her, prompting further viewer comments about how rarely one of Project Runway’s longest-serving judges is being seen.

Episode 6 does not bring her back. Heidi and Law judge alongside Winnie Harlow and Nina Dobrev, while Vulture’s recap notes Garcia’s continued absence.

So, through the first six episodes, Nina’s on-screen judging presence has been dramatically smaller than the original Season 22 announcement might lead viewers to expect.

Has Nina Garcia Left Project Runway?

No official evidence currently supports that conclusion.

Freeform still identifies Nina as a judge. Disney’s current Season 22 guide still names Nina Garcia and Law Roach as members of the judging panel alongside Heidi. Her executive-producer credit also remains part of the official show information.

There has been no departure announcement from Freeform, no statement from Nina saying she has left, and no replacement judge announced as taking over her position permanently.

That does not mean audiences are imagining the absence. The show itself makes it obvious. It simply means “Nina is missing from episodes” and “Nina has left Project Runway” are two very different statements.

Why Is Nina Missing So Much?

At present, the reason is unknown.

One recap has suggested that scheduling could be the explanation, but even that was explicitly framed as a guess rather than reporting. Nina is editor-in-chief of ELLE in addition to her television work, so a scheduling explanation may sound plausible, but plausibility is not confirmation.

It is also not a completely new issue. Coverage of Season 21 noted that Nina missed a significant amount of that season as well, making Season 22’s pattern less unprecedented than it initially appears.

Still, the absence feels more conspicuous now because the network promoted Nina as one of three returning judges. Guest judges such as Ice Spice, Ciara, Winnie Harlow and Nina Dobrev have helped keep the panel full, but a celebrity guest does not necessarily perform the same editorial role as the ELLE editor who has been evaluating Project Runway designers since the franchise’s earliest years.

Could Nina Return Before the Season 22 Finale?

Yes. Nothing official rules out further Season 22 appearances.

The season still has four episodes remaining after Episode 6, and Freeform has not published an episode-by-episode attendance schedule for Nina. Saying she will definitely be back for the finale would therefore be premature, just as saying she is finished with the season would be premature. Disney’s current materials continue to present her as a member of the Season 22 panel.

For now, the cleanest answer is also the least sensational one. Nina Garcia remains officially attached to Project Runway, but her frequent Season 22 absences have not been publicly explained.

That uncertainty is precisely why viewers keep asking where she is. The show has replaced her seat often enough for the pattern to be obvious, yet has not supplied the one piece of information audiences actually need: why one of Project Runway’s defining judges is spending so little time on this season’s runway.
