Project Runway Season 22 Episode 6 arrives with a noticeably different judging table. Heidi Klum and Law Roach remain, while model Winnie Harlow and actress Nina Dobrev join them for “The Devil’s in the Details,” but Tyra Banks is nowhere to be seen. Given how prominently Tyra was promoted before the season and how much attention her judging generated during the opening episodes, her disappearance can easily look like an unexplained exit. Tyra did not suddenly quit or get removed from Project Runway. She was announced from the beginning as a recurring Season 22 judge, and Tyra herself confirmed that Episode 5 was the final episode she filmed for this season.
That makes Episode 6 the beginning of a planned change rather than evidence of behind-the-scenes trouble. The season was always designed around a flexible panel featuring regular judges, recurring Tyra appearances and a large group of celebrity guest judges. Freeform’s original Season 22 announcement explicitly described Banks as recurring rather than a permanent replacement for one of the existing judges.
Tyra Was Never Announced as a Full-Time Season 22 Judge
Freeform officially introduced Tyra as a “recurring judge,” which means she was not scheduled to appear in every episode. The June 18 Season 22 announcement identifies Heidi Klum, Law Roach and Nina Garcia as returning judges, Christian Siriano as mentor, and Banks separately as the new recurring addition. ABC News and People reported the same arrangement when the casting announcement was made.
The wording became easy to overlook because Tyra played such a visible role early in the season. She had appeared as a guest judge during Season 21 before returning in a larger capacity for Season 22, so promotion naturally emphasized the reunion of two major fashion-TV personalities in Tyra and Heidi. Some general coverage even referred to Tyra simply as a new judge, which can create the impression that she had joined the permanent panel. Freeform’s own announcement, however, was more precise from the start.

Episode 5 Was Tyra Banks’ Last Episode This Season
Tyra herself confirmed that her Season 22 run ended with Episode 5 rather than disappearing without explanation in Episode 6. In promotional material posted around the August 6 episode, she described it as the last episode she had done for the season. Project Runway’s official Instagram also circulated the clip, making the planned endpoint public before viewers reached the following week’s judging panel.
That is the strongest evidence against theories that Tyra quit because of a disagreement, was fired after several episodes, or was unexpectedly removed from production. There has been no official announcement supporting any of those explanations. Her departure lines up with the recurring role Freeform had already announced before Season 22 premiered.
Who Replaces Tyra in Episode 6?
There is no single replacement for Tyra because Episode 6 uses a rotating guest panel instead. Heidi and Law are joined by Winnie Harlow and Nina Dobrev for the Devil Wears Prada 2 challenge, while Molly Rogers, the sequel’s costume designer, appears during the workroom portion with Christian Siriano. The result is an episode whose judging is built specifically around celebrity red-carpet fashion rather than around maintaining the same four-person panel used earlier in the season.
Winnie and Nina help judge a challenge in which the designers must make a real premiere gown for Heidi. Bryan Barrientos ultimately wins with the seafoam-green look Heidi had already worn publicly at The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiere in April. Bobby Diakonenkova is eliminated after Bryan uses his winner’s advantage to put her, Naheim Muhammad and Jude Mikulencak in the bottom group.

Season 22 Was Built Around Rotating Fashion and Celebrity Guests
Tyra’s limited run fits a season that was designed from the beginning to rotate personalities through the judging process. Freeform announced guest judges including Ciara, Fausto Puglisi, Ice Spice, Iman, Kiernan Shipka, Niecy Nash, Nina Dobrev, Sergio Hudson, Willy Chavarria and Winnie Harlow. The season also includes cameos from figures such as Molly Rogers, Nara Smith, Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo.
That structure gives individual challenges panels that match their themes rather than requiring every celebrity personality to remain for the full ten-episode season. It also means a familiar face disappearing for a week does not necessarily signal drama behind the scenes. In Tyra’s case, viewers do not even need to rely on that general logic because she directly confirmed that her filming commitment had ended.
Is Tyra Banks Coming Back Later in Season 22?
Based on Tyra’s own statement, viewers should not expect another Season 22 appearance unless the show has held back an unannounced cameo. Her wording identifies Episode 5 as the final episode she filmed this season, and no current official material announces a later return. That makes Episode 6’s absence different from a judge simply taking one week off and returning for the next challenge.
What happens beyond Season 22 is a separate question. Freeform’s current announcement concerns her recurring role for this season, not a permanent multi-season contract, so there is no basis yet for claiming she is gone from Project Runway permanently. Her future involvement would depend on later casting announcements rather than anything established by Episode 6.
For now, the answer is considerably less dramatic than Tyra’s sudden absence might make it seem. She was brought into Season 22 for a limited recurring run, appeared through Episode 5, and publicly told viewers when that run had finished. Episode 6 is not evidence of Tyra Banks walking away from Project Runway. It is simply the point where the season moves on to the next set of judges.
