LEGO One Piece Episodes 1-2 Recap: Usopp Retells the Straw Hats’ Story

Netflix’s LEGO One Piece turns the Straw Hats’ first major adventures into a fast, playful two-part retelling, with Usopp taking responsibility for bringing Chopper up to speed on everything that happened before he joined the crew. That immediately makes the recap unusual because Usopp remembers the broad events correctly but cannot resist improving his own role whenever the opportunity appears.

Across the two episodes, the story moves from Luffy’s childhood and the formation of the original Straw Hat crew through the Grand Line, Baroque Works, Little Garden and Drum Island. By the time Usopp finishes, Chopper understands how his new friends came together, even if he has also learned not to trust every detail his storyteller provides.

Episode 1 begins with Luffy and Shanks

Usopp begins long before he joined the Straw Hats, taking Chopper back to Luffy’s childhood in Windmill Village. Young Luffy idolizes Shanks and dreams of becoming a pirate himself, but his life changes when he accidentally eats the Gum Gum Devil Fruit and gains his unusual stretching abilities at the cost of being unable to swim.

The story quickly moves through Luffy’s encounter with the mountain bandits and the Sea King, with Shanks rescuing him and eventually giving him the straw hat that becomes central to his identity. Luffy promises to return it once he has become a great pirate, setting up the dream that will eventually send him searching for the One Piece.

Years later, Luffy reaches Shells Town and crosses paths with Roronoa Zoro and Nami. Zoro is still a pirate hunter, while Nami is after the map to the Grand Line, but Luffy immediately starts treating both of them as members of the crew even while they repeatedly insist they are not.

Buggy brings Luffy, Zoro and Nami together

Their search for the Grand Line map leads them into trouble with Buggy the Clown, another Devil Fruit user who can separate his body into pieces. Luffy’s straightforward confidence clashes with Buggy’s theatrics, while Nami quickly proves herself to be the practical thinker of the emerging group.

The confrontation ends with Luffy, Zoro and Nami working together closely enough that the “not a crew” argument becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. Usopp then decides that the story has spent enough time without him and finally reaches Syrup Village, where his own version of history becomes considerably less reliable.

According to Usopp, he had already saved Syrup Village from the Black Cat Pirates before Luffy and the others arrived. He also claims to be the best shot in the East Blue and briefly suggests that he built the Going Merry himself, although Chopper’s questions force him to revise that claim to simply helping the crew find the ship.

Sanji joins after the Baratie adventure

With Usopp now aboard the Going Merry, the crew shares the dreams that brought each of them to sea. Luffy wants to become King of the Pirates, Nami wants to map the world, Zoro wants to become the greatest swordsman and Usopp wants to become a brave warrior of the sea.

Their journey brings them to the Baratie, where they meet Sanji and learn about his dream of finding the All Blue. The visit also puts Zoro face to face with Dracule Mihawk, the swordsman he eventually hopes to surpass, and Zoro challenges him despite the enormous difference between their abilities.

Zoro survives the confrontation with his ambition intact, but the crew soon has another problem when fishmen arrive looking for Nami. She leaves with them, leading Luffy and his friends toward Arlong Park and the truth about why Nami has spent years working under Arlong.

Episode 1 ends with Nami choosing the Straw Hats

Usopp’s recap covers Nami’s painful history with Arlong and the burden she has carried while trying to protect her home. When her efforts collapse, she finally turns to Luffy for help, and the Straw Hats rally around her instead of allowing her to face Arlong alone.

Once Arlong is defeated, Nami can finally choose her own future and continue traveling with the crew. Sanji also joins the journey after leaving the Baratie, bringing the core group together as they prepare to enter the Grand Line.

Episode 1 therefore ends with the Straw Hats becoming the recognizable crew Chopper knows, although Usopp naturally frames himself as one of the main reasons everything worked out.

Episode 2 takes the crew into the Grand Line

Usopp continues with the crew’s visit to Loguetown, where Captain Smoker attempts to stop them before they can reach the Grand Line. When Chopper asks how they escaped, Usopp admits he does not really know and simply says the wind seemed to favor them.

The Straw Hats then survive Reverse Mountain and encounter the giant whale Laboon before reaching Whisky Peak. The island initially appears welcoming, but the celebration quickly proves to be connected to Baroque Works.

Miss Wednesday is revealed to be Princess Nefertari Vivi of Alabasta, while Igaram is actually the captain of the Alabasta Royal Guard. They infiltrated Baroque Works because the organization is threatening Vivi’s kingdom, and Luffy agrees to help her reach Alabasta with the information she has uncovered.

Usopp becomes the hero of Little Garden

The Log Pose next directs the crew toward Little Garden, where Baroque Works agents again try to stop them. Mr. 3, Miss Goldenweek and the others put the Straw Hats in serious trouble, but this is also where Usopp’s storytelling becomes particularly creative.

Usopp describes meeting the giants Dorry and Brogy and being inspired by their courage. In his version, their advice gives him the confidence to rescue his captured friends, although Chopper soon notices that several details do not match what actually happened.

When challenged, Usopp openly calls it “dramatic license” and continues the story. The important part for him is that Little Garden strengthens his dream of becoming a brave warrior, even if his version of exactly how he saved everyone should be treated carefully.

Nami’s illness brings the crew to Drum Island

Shortly after leaving Little Garden, Nami suddenly becomes seriously ill. The crew cannot continue toward Alabasta without finding medical help, so the search for a doctor takes them to the snowy Drum Island.

There they meet Dr. Kureha and Tony Tony Chopper, who recognizes the seriousness of Nami’s condition. Usopp allows Chopper to help tell this part of the story, giving him the chance to explain his own past and his relationship with Dr. Hiriluk.

Chopper recalls eating the Human-Human Fruit, being rejected by other reindeer and eventually being taken in by Hiriluk. His mentor gave him his name and encouraged his interest in medicine, leaving Chopper determined to become a doctor who could help others.

The two-part recap catches up with Chopper

Drum Island’s former ruler Wapol returns while Nami is being treated, forcing Luffy and the others into another confrontation. Chopper eventually gets the medicine Nami needs, while the Straw Hats deal with Wapol and protect the friends they have made on the island.

Once Nami is well enough to travel, Luffy asks Chopper to join the crew as their doctor. Chopper decides to leave Drum Island and pursue his dream at sea, while Dr. Kureha quietly makes sure he has the medical supplies he needs for the journey.

That finally brings Usopp’s recap into the present. He admits there was “a little exaggeration” in his version of events, Chopper accepts that making a story your own can be part of the fun, and the crew learns that they are approaching Alabasta as their next adventure begins.
