Will There Be Winter Season 2? Renewal Status and What the Finale Sets Up

Winter arrives as the kind of crime drama that can give viewers a complete investigation each episode while quietly refusing to resolve the story that matters most to its central character. Ethan Winter spends the first season trying to understand what really happened to his fiancee Simone, only for Episode 6 to open that mystery much wider than before.

That makes the Season 2 question especially important. ITV commissioned Winter as a six-part drama starring Richard Armitage and Annabel Scholey, but the first season deliberately ends with several major loose ends rather than closing Ethan’s personal story.

Has Winter been renewed for Season 2?

As of September 30, 2026, ITV has not officially announced Winter Season 2, but there has also been no cancellation announcement. The current status is therefore straightforward: another season has not been confirmed, and viewers should not treat comments from the cast or the finale’s cliffhanger as evidence that a renewal has already happened.

It is also extremely early to expect a decision. Winter premiered on ITV1 and ITVX on September 30, with the complete six-episode series available to stream on ITVX, meaning viewers finishing the boxset immediately are reaching the finale before ITV has had much opportunity to assess its launch and longer-term viewing performance.

Richard Armitage has already indicated that he would be interested in continuing as Ethan. Asked ahead of the premiere about the possibility of playing the character for multiple seasons, he said he hoped the series would continue, which shows enthusiasm from its lead actor but should not be confused with an official commission.

The Simone mystery is deliberately unfinished

The strongest reason Winter has room for a second season comes from Episode 6 itself. Ethan and Lauren discover photographs of Simone, Philip Jensen and Rosemary Lockheart hidden inside Wharf Jewellers, giving them their clearest evidence yet that all three cases belong to the same larger pattern.

They also finally understand Robert Parker’s strange memory of Simone saying “Pegasus.” The word appears to refer to a photograph containing a statue of the mythical winged horse, but the finale never explains why that photograph was important to Simone or what she expected Ethan to understand from it.

The episode also leaves unanswered the identity of whoever collected the photographs at Wharf Jewellers. These are not small loose ends added at the last minute, because Simone’s case has been the personal storyline running beneath Ethan’s weekly investigations from the beginning of the season.

Season 1 therefore advances the mystery substantially without finishing it. If Winter continues, Ethan and Lauren already have a clear central case waiting for them rather than needing the writers to invent an entirely new long-term storyline.

Robert Parker’s appeal changes everything

A second season would also begin with Robert Parker in a dramatically different position. At the start of Winter, Parker is the man convicted in connection with Simone’s death and someone Ethan believes he has every reason to hate, but by the finale Ethan has come to believe that Parker is innocent.

The Philip Jensen case is particularly important because Jensen carries the same triangle signature found in Simone’s case even though Parker was already in custody when Jensen died. Rosemary Lockheart creates another problem for the original theory, leaving Ethan with several connected cases that Parker could not all have been responsible for.

Lauren now accepts that the connection needs to be investigated properly, while Parker is preparing an appeal against his conviction. That means Ethan would no longer have to pursue Simone’s case entirely outside official police channels if the story continues.

The relationship between Ethan’s private obsession and Lauren’s professional investigation has effectively changed. What began as a case Lauren repeatedly tried to stop Ethan from pursuing has become an investigation she is now willing to reopen herself.

Ethan and Lauren also end the season differently

The partnership between Ethan and Lauren changes almost as much as the Simone investigation. Lauren spends much of Season 1 trying to impose professional boundaries on Ethan, while he repeatedly ignores them, sometimes producing valuable results and sometimes making matters considerably worse.

By the finale, their relationship has become much more personal. Lauren is visibly worried when Ethan puts himself in danger, and Ethan immediately recognizes how much she cares about what happens to him.

Lauren has also decided to leave the home she shares with Antony after learning about his affair. Ethan, meanwhile, remains emotionally tied to Simone and is trying to determine whether he can genuinely move forward with Maya, leaving both characters in complicated personal situations.

Ethan and Lauren are not a couple when the season ends. However, a potential second season would inherit a much more emotionally connected partnership than the one introduced in Episode 1, while also placing them together on Ethan’s most personal investigation.

Does Balthazar tell us anything about Season 2?

Winter is officially adapted from the French crime drama Balthazar, and the original series continued well beyond its first season. Balthazar ran for five seasons and 38 episodes, so the British adaptation has a substantial amount of source material available if ITV chooses to continue.

The original show’s central personal mystery also extends beyond Season 1. Raphael Balthazar’s search for answers about his wife, Lise, remains part of the story later in the series, providing a broad structural precedent for Winter allowing Ethan’s Simone investigation to continue.

That does not mean Winter automatically receives five seasons or that the British version will reproduce the French story exactly. ITV’s adaptation has already changed character names, locations, relationships and the arrangement of individual cases, so Balthazar is useful as source-material context rather than evidence of a renewal.

What the French series does prove is that the format can sustain a much longer story. Winter has not reached the end of the material simply because the first six episodes have finished.

What would Winter Season 2 need to answer?

The biggest question is the identity of the person connected to Simone, Jensen and Rosemary. Closely behind that comes the meaning of the Pegasus photograph, because Simone apparently considered the image important enough to refer to it during her final moments, suggesting she knew something Ethan still has not uncovered.

Robert Parker’s appeal also remains unresolved. Ethan and Lauren may now have strong reasons to doubt Parker’s guilt, but Season 1 ends before his conviction is formally overturned or the authorities establish who should have been investigated instead.

Wharf Jewellers creates another major question because Ethan and Lauren find the photographs there without discovering the full relationship between the shop, the victims and whoever has been using the building. All of these loose ends belong to one central mystery rather than functioning as unrelated sequel hooks.

For now, Winter Season 2 remains unconfirmed. The finale clearly leaves narrative room for another season, but viewers will need an official announcement from ITV before treating Ethan and Lauren’s return as certain.
