Louisa Gavin’s plan to become a mother became one of Best Medicine’s biggest unanswered questions when Season 1 ended. Her former fiance, Sheriff Mark Mylow, made an unexpectedly sincere offer: they could have a child together without getting back together as a couple. Martin heard only enough of that conversation to misunderstand what was happening, while viewers were left without Louisa’s answer.
Season 2 has now moved beyond that cliffhanger. Louisa is actively undergoing fertility treatment, Mark remains part of her life, and Episode 2 puts her treatment at the center of the pharmacy mystery. However, the arrangement is not the one Mark proposed in the finale.
Is Louisa Having a Baby With Mark?
No. Louisa decided not to have a baby with Mark and is pursuing motherhood on her own. The Season 2 premiere confirms that she rejected Mark’s proposal because trying to co-parent with her former fiance would be too complicated. Mark had genuinely offered to help as a friend rather than using the baby as a way to restart their engagement, but Louisa ultimately decides that connecting the two parts of her life again is not the right choice.
That does not damage Louisa and Mark’s friendship. Episode 2 shows Mark fully involved when her medication disappears, even if he does not completely understand the fertility process and repeatedly describes it in ways that Louisa has to correct. Their dynamic is affectionate and supportive rather than romantic.
The distinction matters because Season 1 deliberately made Martin think the opposite. He overheard Mark discussing having a baby with Louisa without hearing the full context, assumed they were reuniting and responded by calling Eden. Mark’s offer therefore changed Martin’s relationship without actually becoming Louisa’s plan.
What Is Louisa’s Season 2 Baby Plan?
Louisa is continuing fertility treatment independently. Before Season 2 began, the show’s creative team had already confirmed that her journey toward motherhood would remain a major storyline and that the financial realities of IVF would affect other parts of her life.
Episode 2 provides the clearest look yet at where she is in that process. Louisa arrives at the pharmacy to collect a time-sensitive medication and discovers that it was accidentally taken during the break-in. She explains that the medication is a trigger shot and that she needs to use it exactly 36 hours before her scheduled egg retrieval.
That creates the episode’s ticking clock. Louisa is not simply worried about replacing an ordinary prescription. Missing the injection could mean missing the retrieval window she has spent months preparing for, and nearby pharmacies cannot provide a replacement quickly enough.
The episode does not explain every part of Louisa’s fertility treatment, nor does it identify all of her future reproductive plans. What it makes clear is that she has moved beyond merely considering motherhood. She is actively going through the process.
Is Louisa Pregnant in Best Medicine Season 2?
Not yet, at least not by the end of Episode 2. The trigger shot is presented in the episode as preparation for egg retrieval, which means finding and taking the medication does not itself establish a pregnancy. Louisa still has further stages ahead of her before Best Medicine can answer whether the treatment ultimately results in a baby.
That distinction is especially important because the episode’s ending can look like a major fertility milestone. It is a significant step for Louisa emotionally and medically within the story, but it should not be interpreted as confirmation that she has become pregnant.
For now, the confirmed development is simpler: Louisa stays on her chosen path toward motherhood.
Why Does Louisa Almost Give Up in Episode 2?
For most of the episode, Louisa is determined to find her medication. She questions Old Man Collins alongside Martin and Mark, follows Martin’s increasingly elaborate theory about the robberies and keeps track of the shrinking amount of time she has left. Then something changes when they finally locate the missing medicine.
Martin, Louisa and Eden find two teenagers hiding in an isolated cabin after a series of stolen medical supplies leads them there. Once the immediate emergency involving Kyle is under control, Louisa spots her medication among the items that were taken. She has found exactly what she spent the episode searching for, yet suddenly she is no longer certain that she wants to use it.
Louisa wonders whether the absurd chain of events that nearly cost her the medication should be interpreted as a sign. The anxiety that has been underneath her decision finally surfaces, and she questions whether she is meant to become a mother at all.
It is an effective reversal because Best Medicine does not make Louisa’s biggest obstacle purely logistical. The missing medicine creates the external problem, but recovering it exposes the emotional uncertainty that was already there.
Why Does Martin Convince Louisa to Continue?
Martin does not make Louisa’s decision for her. Instead, he reminds her that one chaotic day should not erase months of thought and preparation.
He knows how hard Louisa has worked for this opportunity. He reminds her that she has been planning and saving toward becoming a mother and tells her not to allow fear of the future to overwhelm what she actually wants in the present. Louisa eventually decides to take the trigger shot.
The scene matters beyond the fertility storyline because Martin becomes the person who can reach Louisa at the precise moment when she doubts herself most. Eden, who is both Martin’s girlfriend and Louisa’s fertility doctor, is standing nearby, making the emotional configuration even more complicated.
Nothing about the moment means that Martin is suddenly replacing Mark in Louisa’s motherhood plan. The episode never suggests that Martin will be the father of her child or that Louisa has changed her independent plan. What it does show is that Martin remains deeply involved in the emotional part of Louisa’s life even while the two are technically with other people or pursuing separate futures.
Why Did Louisa Turn Down Mark?
Louisa’s decision fits the direction her character has been taking since she ended her engagement. Mark’s Season 1 offer was generous precisely because he was not demanding that Louisa reunite with him. He knew how much becoming a mother mattered to her and believed they could raise a child together because their friendship had always worked better than their romance.
The problem is that Louisa had already spent years building a life with Mark before realizing that something important was missing. Becoming permanent co-parents would reconnect them in an even more complicated way than marriage, even if neither intended the arrangement to be romantic.
Abigail Spencer has described Louisa’s Season 2 motherhood storyline as being connected to “choosing herself.” She also noted that Louisa ended her engagement to Mark for a reason and that meeting Martin helped her recognize something she had been missing in the relationship.
That perspective helps explain why Louisa’s decision is not a rejection of Mark as a person. She trusts him, cares about him and clearly still considers him one of her closest friends. She simply does not want becoming a mother to reverse a decision she already made about how she wants to live.
What Does Louisa’s Baby Story Mean for Martin?
Martin’s role is becoming harder to separate from Louisa’s fertility story because Eden connects them both. Eden is the specialist guiding Louisa while also being Martin’s girlfriend, creating an unusual situation in which Martin’s romantic present is directly involved in Louisa’s possible future as a mother.
Season 2 Episode 2 complicates that further. Sarah accidentally tells Eden about Martin and Louisa’s earlier kiss, while Martin later becomes Louisa’s emotional support when she nearly walks away from treatment.
The series has therefore removed Mark as the potential co-parent without simplifying Louisa’s romantic life. Martin is still with Eden, Louisa is still pursuing motherhood independently, and neither Martin nor Louisa has directly addressed what their previous feelings mean now.
The show’s producers have also made clear that Martin’s feelings for Louisa have not simply disappeared because he resumed his relationship with Eden. Executive producer Rodney Ferrell said before the season that the Martin-Louisa story is “definitely not over,” while Josh Charles described Martin’s feelings as something that remains present.
That does not mean a reunion is imminent, but it explains why Louisa’s motherhood storyline and Martin’s romantic storyline keep crossing paths.
Will Louisa Have a Baby in Best Medicine Season 2?
Episode 2 does not answer that yet. Louisa successfully reaches the next stage of treatment, but the series has not confirmed that she becomes pregnant or that the fertility process will proceed without further complications.
What Season 2 has answered is the Mark question. Louisa is not having a baby with her former fiance. She chooses to continue the journey on her own, and Episode 2 reinforces that choice when she nearly quits but ultimately follows through with the trigger shot.
That makes the storyline less about choosing between Mark and Martin and more about Louisa refusing to make motherhood dependent on either man. The romantic complications are still there, especially with Martin, but her decision to pursue a family is currently her own.
