Apple TV’s “Last Seen” reaches its Season 1 finale with the mystery of Maggie Ridley’s disappearance largely solved but the emotional consequences still unfolding. Episode 6, “The Choice,” picks up after Henry escapes with Sarah and the badly injured Jenna, while Ian forces Donald to help him find where his brother is heading. What follows is less about proving that Sarah is Maggie and more about whether Ian can reach his daughter before Henry disappears with her again.
The finale brings nearly every major storyline back to the same location. Henry returns to the religious compound where he and Donald grew up, Sarah finally hears the full story of how she became part of the Reid family, and Ian arrives knowing that finding Maggie will not necessarily mean getting back the child he remembers.
Ian makes Donald take him to Henry
Ian begins the episode determined to reach Henry before the police do. Still recovering from the injuries he suffered at the Reid property, he takes Donald with him and demands directions to the place where Henry is likely to hide. Donald eventually confirms that his brother is heading back to their father’s compound, the isolated community both men knew during their childhood.
The journey gives Ian more confirmation about what happened to Maggie, but it does little to calm him. Donald admits that Sarah really is Ian’s daughter and that Henry has been living with that secret for years. Ian has spent more than a decade hoping to hear those words, yet by this point the truth only makes him more determined to reach Sarah before Henry takes her somewhere even harder to find.

Henry reaches the compound with Jenna and Sarah
Henry arrives at the compound believing his father can help Jenna. Sarah has repeatedly asked him to seek proper medical treatment, but Henry continues insisting that his father has helped people through serious situations before and will know what to do. His confidence quickly collapses when they finally arrive and it becomes clear that Jenna has already died.
Sarah is devastated. Henry had kept promising that Jenna would recover once they reached the compound, and the loss becomes another example of him refusing to tell her what is really happening. The community itself also looks very different from the place Henry remembers, with only a small number of followers remaining around his father.
Jenna’s death leaves Sarah almost completely dependent on Henry at the exact moment she is beginning to question everything he has told her. She has already learned that Jenna and Henry are not her biological parents, but the finale now forces her to confront the entire story behind her childhood.

Sarah learns why Henry took Maggie
Sarah pushes Henry for the truth about the original Sarah Reid and the grave near their home. Henry finally admits that he and Jenna once had a biological daughter named Sarah, who died when she was young. After that loss, Henry later saw Maggie with Ian and eventually took her, bringing her back to Jenna and raising her under Sarah’s identity.
The explanation completes the story that Episode 5 began revealing. The birth certificate police found was genuine because Sarah Reid really existed, but Maggie had been living under that child’s name for most of her life. Henry still talks about raising her as though the years they spent together justify what happened, while Sarah now has to process the fact that the family she remembers began with her being taken away from another one.
She does not immediately stop caring about Henry simply because she knows the truth. He remains the father she remembers, even as the facts of what he did become impossible for her to ignore.
Ian finally finds Sarah at the compound
Ian eventually reaches the compound while Henry’s father and the remaining members prepare for the possibility that outsiders are coming. Sarah manages to get away and finds Ian, warning him that the people around the property are prepared to stop anyone trying to enter.
For the first time, Ian and Sarah get a brief chance to talk without Henry controlling the conversation. Ian shows her photographs of Debbie and Dean and tries to tell her about the family she came from. He does not get the simple reunion he once imagined, because Sarah is still trying to understand how the stranger standing in front of her can also be her biological father.
Their conversation is interrupted when Henry’s father finds them. The confrontation becomes increasingly dangerous, and Henry eventually intervenes when his father threatens Sarah. Henry turns against him and brings the conflict at the compound to an end, allowing Sarah and Ian another chance to leave.
What happens to Henry?
Ian later confronts Henry himself, but Sarah stops the situation from escalating further. Despite everything Henry has admitted, she still cannot watch the man who raised her be harmed. She asks Ian to stop and remains emotionally attached to Henry even while understanding that he took her from her biological family.
Sarah and Henry eventually leave together, but police are waiting outside the compound. Sarah urges Henry to surrender rather than make the situation worse. Henry gets out of the vehicle while armed, and officers respond, bringing his escape to a final end.
Sarah is left grieving both Jenna and Henry in an extremely short period of time. Whatever they did to hide her identity, they were still the parents she remembers growing up with, which makes her return to the Ridley family far more complicated than a conventional reunion.
Does Ian get Maggie back?
Yes, but not in the way Ian once imagined. Sarah is finally removed from Henry’s control and goes to Debbie’s home, where she begins meeting the biological family she lost when she was a small child. Debbie and Dean try to give her space rather than expecting her to immediately behave as though the last 11 years never happened.
Sarah starts asking questions about her early childhood and the person she was before she became Sarah Reid. She is also given room to bring the parts of her present life with her, including her music and art, rather than being expected to abandon everything connected with the identity she grew up with.
Ian remains somewhat outside that new arrangement. Dean tells him that Sarah needs time, and Ian finally accepts that finding his daughter does not automatically restore their relationship. He has completed the search that consumed most of his life, but rebuilding a connection with her will take much longer.

Last Seen ending explained
The finale closes with Sarah beginning a new life with Debbie and Dean while Ian gives her the distance she needs. She knows that she was born Maggie Ridley, but she continues identifying herself as Sarah, the name attached to almost every memory she has.
“Last Seen” therefore ends with Ian succeeding in the most basic sense: his daughter is alive, she is no longer hidden from him, and the truth about her disappearance has finally been exposed. What he does not get is an instant return to the family life that existed before Maggie vanished.
The final scenes leave Sarah with the freedom to decide how she wants to understand both parts of her life, while Ian finally steps away from the search that defined him for 11 years. The mystery is over, but the work of becoming a family again has only begun.
