Episode 2 of Apple TV’s ‘Last Seen’ shifts more attention toward Sarah and the secluded life Henry has built for his family. While Ian waits to learn whether the remains discovered in the woods belong to Mags, Sarah begins encountering pieces of the outside world that challenge everything she understands about herself. Those two storylines gradually converge through an upcoming memorial for Mags. By the end of the episode, Sarah is frightened enough by what she discovers to call emergency services and tell the dispatcher that she may be the missing girl.

Sarah’s Life With Henry Is Almost Completely Isolated

Henry lives outside town with his wife Jenna and their daughter Sarah, keeping the family largely separated from everyone around them. He reacts coldly when a neighbor tries to speak with him and clearly dislikes outsiders getting close. Sarah, however, has secretly become friends with the neighbor’s son Tommy.

Tommy introduces her to music players and other parts of modern teenage life that appear unfamiliar to her. Their friendship gives Sarah a connection to a world Henry has kept beyond her reach. It also creates an opportunity for her to begin asking questions that she might never have considered while living entirely under her father’s control.

Meanwhile, investigators determine that the child found in the woods died from strangulation. Identification will require DNA from Deb, so Ian still has no definitive answer about whether the remains belong to his daughter.

Dean Remembers Someone Coming to the House Before Mags Vanished

Detective Pena wants to speak with Dean about the night his sister disappeared. Dean remembers a man coming to the house shortly before Mags was taken, although he had been high at the time. When Ian questions him, Dean says he believes he could still recognize the man’s face if he saw him again.

That becomes important when Ian and Deb begin planning a memorial for Mags. Ian reasons that whoever buried the child’s remains knew the woods well enough to find a secluded location before a proper road existed there. He therefore suspects someone local may have been responsible and could attend the memorial.

Ian asks Dean to study the faces in the crowd and look for the man he remembers. What is supposed to be an act of remembrance quietly becomes another attempt by Ian to investigate his daughter’s disappearance.

The Mags Memorial Catches Sarah’s Attention

Jenna sees a flyer for Mags’ memorial while visiting town and immediately takes it home to Henry. She believes they should attend, but Henry reacts by burning the flyer and dismissing the idea. Sarah manages to recover part of it before it is destroyed.

Seeing the name “Mags” triggers something in her memory. Sarah remembers carving that name into a tree when she was younger, giving her the first concrete reason to wonder whether the missing girl’s story might somehow involve her.

She shows the surviving piece of the flyer to Tommy, who notices coordinates printed on it and offers to help her find the location. Sarah is interested but knows she cannot simply disappear while Henry is watching her. An opportunity arrives when Henry unexpectedly decides to attend the memorial himself.

Henry Appears at the Memorial, but Dean Misses Him

Before the memorial, Donnie visits Henry’s home with gifts and hopes to spend some time with Sarah and the family. Henry quickly sends him away. Jenna stays home because of a migraine, while Henry leaves for town.

At the memorial, Dean follows Ian’s instructions and looks carefully at the people attending. He comes close to seeing Henry, but Henry turns away before Dean gets a proper look at his face. Whatever connection Henry may have to the events from eleven years earlier therefore remains unresolved.

Ian receives an even bigger development before the gathering begins. Pena informs him that DNA testing has confirmed the remains are not Mags. She wants the memorial called off, but Ian refuses because he still sees the gathering as an opportunity to identify the mysterious man Dean remembers.

Sarah Calls Ian and Says She Might Be Mags

Ian does not tell Deb that the remains belong to another child. Pena eventually arrives and tells Deb herself, leaving her furious that Ian allowed the memorial to continue without sharing the truth. Ian knows that going home alone afterward could push him toward another relapse, so he returns to work instead.

Sarah uses Henry’s absence to meet Tommy. Before they can investigate the coordinates, Tommy takes her to a party in town, where the unfamiliar surroundings briefly seem exciting. After becoming separated from Tommy, Sarah ends up with another boy and notices another copy of the Mags flyer.

Looking closely at Mags’ photograph, Sarah suddenly realizes that the missing girl could be her. Disturbed and overwhelmed, she runs from the party and finds a phone booth with an emergency number displayed nearby. Ian happens to answer her call.

At first, he assumes he is speaking to a confused teenager who needs help getting home. Everything changes when Sarah says she thinks she might be Mags. Ian races to the phone booth, but Sarah has disappeared before he arrives, leaving him with the first indication in eleven years that his daughter may still be alive.
