Apple TV’s ‘Last Seen’ begins with a grim discovery in the woods when a man walking his dogs notices that one of them has picked up a human jaw. He leaves the remains where they are, unwilling to involve himself, but three girls later find the same area and alert the authorities. The bones appear to belong to a young child, immediately reviving memories of a disappearance that has haunted the town for eleven years. For former detective Ian Ridley, the discovery feels painfully personal because his three-year-old daughter, Mags, vanished from her home more than a decade earlier.

Ian Is Still Living With Mags’ Disappearance

Ian is six months sober and now works as an emergency dispatcher rather than as a police detective. His life has moved forward in some ways, but emotionally he remains tied to what happened to Mags. His ex-wife Deb is pregnant with her new partner, Bill, and asks Ian to return the cot that once belonged to their daughter. Ian agrees, yet when Bill arrives to collect it, he cannot bring himself to let it go.

His work life is complicated as well. Ian is sleeping with his employee Polly, whose lateness and long breaks have begun to cause problems. Even so, Ian remains sharp when dealing with emergencies. After Polly struggles with a frightened caller whose abusive partner is outside her home, Ian takes over and calmly guides the woman through the situation.

The call stays with him after his shift. Ian becomes concerned enough to look up the woman’s address, already showing how difficult it is for him to leave danger alone once he believes someone may need help.

The Human Remains Bring Ian Back Into the Investigation

News that the remains may belong to a child draws Ian straight to the scene. Detective Isabella Pena, who is handling the case, does not want a former detective interfering, although she allows him a brief look because she understands the possibility that the victim could be Mags. Ian notices paw prints in the mud and begins looking for dog owners who live nearby.

His search leads him to the man from the opening scene. More troublingly, Ian discovers pajamas at the man’s property that match what Mags was wearing when she disappeared. For a moment, it appears Ian may finally have found the person connected to his daughter’s fate.

The police soon rule that possibility out. The man has an alibi for the night Mags vanished, and he explains that his dogs found the clothing in the woods and brought it home. Because the pajamas had been wrapped in plastic, they survived for years without completely deteriorating. He also admits that he had seen the human remains but avoided reporting them because he was illegally trading dogs and did not want police attention.

Ian’s Relapse Ends With Another Arrest

Being told to stay away from the investigation only makes Ian’s condition worse. He starts drinking again and returns to the home of the woman whose emergency call he had handled earlier. When her partner arrives, Ian follows the family to the town fair, convinced that he may have to intervene.

Polly finds him there and learns more about Mags’ disappearance. Ian explains that he and Deb had gone out on a date that night and left three-year-old Mags with their sixteen-year-old son, Dean. Dean had been smoking marijuana, and Ian has spent years blaming himself for not being home.

That guilt boils over when Ian sees the man he has been following pressuring his frightened son to go on a scary ride. Ian attacks him and is arrested for assault. His AA sponsor and friend Donnie picks him up the following day and forces Ian to confront what another relapse could do to him and the people around him.

Ian Finally Lets Go of Mags’ Cot

Donnie’s words have an effect. Ian takes the cot to Deb, finally surrendering one of the physical objects that has kept him anchored to the past. Deb tells him she wants to hold a funeral for Mags, and Ian reluctantly accepts that after eleven years they may need some form of closure.

He also learns that Dean has returned to town, although the relationship between father and son remains strained. Back at home, Ian recommits himself to sobriety and looks at age-progressed images showing what Mags might look like as a teenager.

The episode then delivers its most unsettling revelation. The computer-generated image closely resembles a teenage girl named Sarah, who lives on an isolated farm with Henry and Jenna. Sarah is alive, but her secluded upbringing and resemblance to Mags immediately transform Ian’s missing-person case into something far more complicated.
