Charles and Liz’s 500-Year Marriage Has Lost Its Spark

The episode opens in Austria in 1526, when Liz asks Charles to turn her into a vampire so they can spend eternity together. Charles initially hesitates, reminding her that forever is a serious commitment, but Liz insists that she loves everything about him, even his habit of clearing his throat. Convinced that their love will never fade, Charles eventually bites her and grants her immortality. However, when the story moves forward 500 years to present-day Seattle, the same habit Liz once found adorable has become one of the things she cannot stand about her husband.

Their relationship has reached a point where almost every conversation turns into an argument. Charles complains about their monotonous existence, while Liz feels that her husband no longer appreciates her or supports her career as a history professor. Their problems are made worse by the fact that vampire marriages cannot simply end in divorce, as the council of elders punishes such separations with death. Liz wishes they could rediscover their old relationship, although Charles seems more interested in complaining about the inconveniences of modern vampire life.

How Max Meets Emma and Falls in Love

The story then introduces Max Marshall, a young man working as a criminal investigator for the Social Security Administration while pursuing a master’s degree in psychology. He meets Emma, played by Helen J Shen, when he brings his rescued dog to her veterinary clinic, claiming that the animal might have swallowed something. Emma initially suspects that Max is inventing an excuse to ask her out, particularly because she has encountered similar situations since becoming the new veterinarian in town. However, after discovering that his dog is also trained to visit children in hospitals, she realizes that he is genuinely caring and agrees to have dinner with him.

Their relationship develops quickly, and within two months, Max believes he has found the woman he wants to spend his life with. There is only one problem: Emma refuses to introduce him to her family or allow him to visit her house. His coworker Benji suspects that Emma might secretly be married, but Max believes she simply has an embarrassing family situation. When he finally confronts her, Emma claims that her family is Canadian and that her father disapproves of her dating someone outside their community. Max accepts the explanation, unaware that the truth is considerably more complicated.

Emma’s Family and Their Vampire Secrets

Meanwhile, Charles and Liz live with an extended vampire family that has developed its own unusual way of surviving in the modern world. Instead of hunting humans, they purchase blood from a man named Steve, although Charles occasionally expresses nostalgia for the days when vampires could hunt freely. Their household also includes Jesse, his human wife Phyllis, and their twin sons, Henry and Mort. While Henry possesses impressive vampire abilities, Mort struggles with his supernatural powers and appears capable of little more than understanding the family’s dog.

Phyllis remains unaware that her husband and children are vampires because Jesse repeatedly erases her memories whenever she discovers something suspicious. This arrangement allows the family to maintain a relatively normal domestic life, although Mort is increasingly frustrated by his brother’s superior abilities. Emma’s family history is equally unusual. Liz reveals that she and Charles adopted her as an orphan and later turned her into a vampire to save her from diphtheria, since two undead parents cannot have biological children together.

Max’s Investigation Exposes the Vampire Family

While working at the Social Security Administration, Max discovers something suspicious about a man named Jesse Blythe, who appears to have been collecting benefits since 1935. Believing that the records indicate possible fraud, Max visits the registered address to investigate. Neither he nor the family realizes that he is about to meet his girlfriend’s parents. Jesse attempts to use his supernatural powers to make Max forget the investigation, but the trick fails, leaving the vampires with an increasingly uncomfortable visitor.

When Charles and Liz learn that Max is studying psychology, Liz immediately turns his investigation into an opportunity to discuss her marriage. Max explains that his parents once rediscovered their affection through dancing lessons, encouraging the couple to find an activity that reminds them of their younger days. His advice unexpectedly inspires Charles and Liz to remember the excitement they once experienced while hunting humans. As Max continues questioning Jesse and Phyllis about their inconsistent personal histories, Charles decides that killing the investigator might be easier than relocating the entire family.

Just as the vampires reveal their fangs and prepare to attack, Emma arrives and recognizes Max. She has no choice but to confess that Charles and Liz are her parents and that her family consists of vampires rather than Canadians. Max is understandably terrified, especially after realizing how close he came to becoming their next victim. Although Emma hopes he can accept the truth, Charles makes the situation worse by announcing that he disapproves of their relationship.

Charles believes Emma should date another vampire, even suggesting that she reconcile with her former boyfriend Ivan. Emma reminds him that Ivan still feeds on humans and once attacked someone over a minor traffic incident. Nevertheless, Charles refuses to change his mind, arguing that Max does not belong in their world. Hurt by the family’s deception and frightened by Charles’ threats, Max leaves without knowing whether he can continue dating Emma.

Why Liz Encourages Max to Return

Later, Liz visits Max’s apartment and asks him not to abandon Emma because of what happened. She explains that she has never seen her daughter so happy with anyone and believes their relationship deserves another chance. Max admits that he loves Emma and might eventually accept her vampire identity, but he cannot ignore Charles’ threats. Liz assures him that her husband comes from a different time and will respect someone willing to stand up for what he believes in.

Encouraged by her words, Max returns to the family’s house and confronts Charles directly. During the argument, someone suggests solving their problem by turning Max into a vampire, but neither Max nor Charles welcomes the proposal. Charles eventually admits that his objection is not simply Max’s humanity. He does not like the young man and has no interest in being connected to him for eternity.

Liz challenges her husband by reminding him that their relationship began under similar circumstances. When they first fell in love, Charles defied the leader of his own coven, who had forbidden him from seeing her. She argues that the man she married once believed love was worth fighting for, and she hopes some part of that man still exists. Her words finally reach Charles, who reluctantly agrees to let Emma and Max continue dating.

Eternally Yours Episode 1 Ending Explained: Does Max Become a Vampire?

Yes, Max becomes a vampire in the final moments of “Eternally Yours” Episode 1, although his transformation happens under circumstances nobody anticipated. While the family argues about his future, Mort is practicing telekinesis with Jesse, desperately trying to move a pencil using his mind. Instead, he accidentally sends a heavy marble bust of Charles flying across the room. The object strikes Max in the head, causing a serious injury that leaves him unconscious and apparently no longer breathing.

The family immediately realizes that Max might die before anyone can get him to a hospital. Someone suggests turning him into a vampire, which could save him from his injuries, but Charles is reluctant to make such a permanent commitment. He has only just agreed to let Max date Emma and considers that enough personal growth for one day. However, Liz pleads with him to save the young man’s life, and Charles finally gives in, sinking his fangs into Max’s neck.

Max’s narration confirms that this is the day he technically dies and becomes undead. Moments earlier, he had been celebrating Charles’ reluctant approval of his relationship, only for his life to change completely because of Mort’s uncontrolled powers. The episode therefore ends with Max surviving the accident through his transformation into a vampire, rather than recovering as a human. Charles’ decision also restores some of Liz’s faith in her husband, as she recognizes the compassionate man she fell in love with centuries earlier.

What Does Max’s Transformation Mean for Emma and Charles?

Max becoming a vampire fundamentally changes the family’s situation because Charles can no longer dismiss him as an ordinary human who will eventually disappear from Emma’s life. Ironically, he now faces the possibility of being connected to the young man for centuries, despite repeatedly insisting that he does not like him. The transformation also raises an important question about Max’s future, since he had explicitly said that he did not want to become a vampire when the family first suggested it. Although Charles acts to save his life, Max never gets the opportunity to make that decision for himself.

The episode closes with Max opening his eyes as a newly transformed vampire, while Jesse once again wipes Phyllis’ memory after she witnesses something supernatural. This final joke reinforces how thoroughly the family’s secrets shape their everyday existence. For Max, however, secrecy is only one of the problems awaiting him. He entered the house hoping to win Emma’s father’s approval and leaves the experience with an entirely different future, one in which getting along with his girlfriend’s family may become a lifelong responsibility in the most literal sense.
