Ted and Michelle

Ted and Michelle have spent much of Ted Lasso learning how to remain part of each other’s lives after their marriage ended. Season 4 brings them physically closer again through Henry, but Episode 6 makes their relationship especially interesting when they spend New Year’s Eve together at the Crown & Anchor.

Instead of joining Richmond at Zelda Southport’s party, Ted stays behind with Michelle and Henry. What begins as a quiet family evening eventually turns into one of their most open conversations since the divorce. Michelle talks about her loneliness, explains what drew her to Dr. Jacob, and even questions Ted about his own romantic life. By the end of the night, she also leaves behind a familiar symbol that carries considerable meaning for Ted.

Ted and Michelle Do Not Get Back Together in Episode 6

Ted and Michelle do not restart their romantic relationship in Episode 6. Their New Year’s Eve together instead shows how much healthier their connection has become since the painful period surrounding their divorce.

Michelle can immediately tell that something is bothering Ted. He has been questioning himself as Richmond’s coach, particularly after suspending Alice Chilton, and admits that he feels somewhat lost. Michelle responds not as someone trying to win her former husband back, but as someone who still understands him better than most people.

She reminds Ted that honesty has always been important to the way he leads people and encourages him to trust that part of himself again.

Their closeness is unmistakable, but the episode does not frame it as the beginning of a romantic reunion. If anything, their later conversation makes the opposite possibility more likely.

Why Did Michelle Date Dr. Jacob After Divorcing Ted?

Michelle also finally offers more insight into how her relationship with Dr. Jacob began.

She tells Ted that she felt extremely lonely after their divorce. When she happened to cross paths with their former therapist again, she pursued the relationship partly because Jacob already knew everything she had been through.

Starting over with somebody completely new would have meant explaining her marriage, divorce and emotional baggage from the beginning. With Jacob, much of that history was already known.

Her explanation gives more context to a relationship that has always been uncomfortable because Jacob previously served as a therapist connected to Ted and Michelle’s marriage.

Episode 6 does not attempt to erase those complications. Instead, Michelle explains the emotional state that influenced her decision. She was lonely and chose familiarity at a time when beginning again seemed difficult.

The fact that she can now discuss it openly with Ted also shows how much their relationship has changed. Earlier versions of Ted and Michelle probably could not have had this conversation without reopening old wounds.

Why Does Michelle Encourage Ted to Date Someone Else?

The strongest indication that Michelle is not trying to reunite with Ted comes when their conversation turns toward his dating life.

Michelle is surprised to discover that Ted has not been on a date in quite some time. Ted eventually mentions the woman he encountered backstage earlier in the season, although he still does not know her name.

Rather than becoming uncomfortable or jealous, Michelle encourages him to find the woman and ask her out.

That moment matters because Michelle is not simply accepting that Ted might eventually move on. She is actively pushing him toward that possibility.

Ted’s mysterious backstage encounter has remained in his mind, and Michelle seems to recognize that he has been using work, Richmond and family as reasons not to seriously consider another relationship.

Whether the woman eventually becomes Ted’s new love interest is still uncertain, but Michelle clearly wants him to give himself permission to try.

What Does Michelle’s New Believe Poster Mean?

Michelle’s most meaningful gesture comes after Ted finally leaves the Crown & Anchor to celebrate with the Richmond players outside.

Earlier in the evening, Ted admitted that he had begun doubting whether he was making the right decisions. He has always been the person asking everyone around him to believe, yet Episode 6 finds him struggling to follow his own advice. When Ted returns, he discovers that Michelle has made him a new “Believe” poster.

The gesture works because Michelle understands exactly what Ted needs without trying to solve his problems for him. She cannot decide how he should handle Alice or tell him whether every coaching decision will succeed. What she can do is remind him of the philosophy that has carried him through difficult moments before. There is affection behind the gesture, but the episode does not need to make that affection romantic.

Michelle still believes in Ted. She still wants him to succeed. And Ted clearly values having someone from his old life remind him that the version of himself he brought to Richmond has not disappeared.

Could Ted and Michelle Still Reconcile Later?

Ted Lasso has not completely closed the door on Ted and Michelle ever reconnecting romantically, but Episode 6 does not appear to be moving them in that direction. Instead, the episode gives them something arguably more important: peace with one another.

They can talk honestly about their divorce, Michelle’s relationship with Jacob, Ted’s loneliness and the mistakes both of them made without falling back into the resentment that once defined their marriage.

Michelle’s encouragement for Ted to pursue another woman is particularly important. She seems ready to see Ted build a life beyond their marriage rather than waiting for circumstances to bring them back together.

Their relationship will always remain significant because of Henry, and they clearly still share considerable love and respect. Episode 6, however, suggests that Ted and Michelle may finally be reaching a place where caring deeply about one another does not require becoming husband and wife again.
