Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 6, What the Universe Is Made Of, returns to Jason, Daniela and Charlie after Episode 5’s detour into the life of another Jason variant. The Dessen family is still fractured, but this episode gives each of them something outside the family to hold onto. Daniela retreats to someone she considers her father, Charlie settles further into his new life, and Jason begins wondering whether science could give him an identity beyond being the man constantly trying to protect his family from the Box.

The episode also brings Blair’s multiverse story back into focus. Her unlikely reunion with Jason leads to a discussion about quantum entanglement and why Box travelers seem to keep finding each other across impossible odds. That idea becomes much more unsettling by the ending, when Blair unexpectedly encounters the Leighton she knew before entering the Box and learns that he has turned this technologically backward world into the base for a secret project.

Jason Meets a Very Different Amanda

Jason visits Charlie at the diner where he is working and meets his boss, Amanda Azevedo. She looks exactly like Amanda Lucas, but this world’s Amanda lived a completely different life.

Amanda tells Jason that she originally wanted to become a doctor. Her plans changed after her mother, during a manic episode, bought the restaurant, used her home as collateral and spent Amanda’s college fund. Amanda had little choice but to help make the business successful, and years later she is still running it.

Jason initially calls her Amanda Lucas when introducing her later, only to be corrected to Azevedo. It is another reminder that people who look identical across worlds can become almost entirely different people when a few decisions or circumstances change.

More importantly, Amanda gives Jason advice he needs to hear. After learning that Jason and Daniela are going through a difficult period and that Charlie is becoming more independent, she tells him not to lose himself by defining his entire existence around being a husband and father. For Jason, that question lands at exactly the right time.

Blair Returns and Raises a New Theory About the Box

Jason then encounters Blair, but unlike Amanda Azevedo, this is not simply another local version of someone he knows. This Blair is a Box traveler.

She confirms that after Jason left her behind in the world overrun by dangerous insects, she eventually became ready to enter the Box again. She credits advice from Amanda Lucas with helping her reach that point. Blair deliberately searched for a reality where she could disappear, create a new identity and live without the constant surveillance of the modern internet. She thought she had found exactly that.

Then she encountered Daniela. Not merely another Daniela, but Jason’s Daniela, living with the same Jason Blair had encountered in another reality. The coincidence is so improbable that Blair begins wondering whether it is really a coincidence at all.

Jason has already been studying quantum entanglement, and their conversation produces one of the episode’s most important ideas. Blair wonders whether Box travelers themselves could somehow become entangled, causing people whose lives have been connected to repeatedly find one another across different realities.

Jason does not have an answer. He suggests an even stranger possibility: perhaps those people were always connected, and the Box is simply following relationships created by their past choices.

It is still a theory, not a confirmed explanation of how the Box works. But Season 2 has now repeatedly brought the same people into the same supposedly infinite worlds, making pure chance increasingly difficult to accept.

Can Jason Actually Shut Down the Box?

Jason tells Blair he has been studying entanglement because he wants to permanently shut down the Box in their world. Blair immediately identifies the problem. Destroying the physical Box is not enough. Jason already learned this when he dismantled it and another Box appeared. Blair argues that whenever somebody elsewhere in the multiverse establishes a connection with this reality, another access point can simply manifest.

That changes Jason’s problem completely. He is not trying to destroy one machine anymore. He is trying to disconnect an entire reality from a network that may have infinite entry points. Jason still does not know whether that is possible. At the same time, his conversation with Amanda Azevedo has planted another idea in his mind: perhaps he needs something to build rather than something to destroy.

Jason Decides He Wants to Become a Scientist Again

Blair invites Jason to an educational benefit filled with scientists, professors and engineers. Jason initially looks uncomfortable entering that world again, particularly because he has spent years comparing himself with Jason2.

Jason2 became the successful physicist Jason once imagined he could have been. He appeared on magazine covers, won recognition and actually built the Box. Jason1 chose Daniela, Charlie and teaching instead.

At the gala, Jason finally admits what he wants now. He wants to become a working scientist again. He wants to publish meaningful research, investigate the universe and create something of his own. When he worries that Blair is confusing him with the brilliant Jason she previously knew, she reminds him that the underlying mind is still the same.

Jason’s scientific ambition therefore does not necessarily mean he is returning to Jason2’s path. It could instead become his attempt to build an identity that belongs specifically to him.

That distinction matters after Episode 4, when Daniela accused Jason of disappearing into his obsession with the Box. Pursuing science may help him rebuild himself, but only if he can avoid allowing the Box to consume him again.

Daniela Finds Her Father and Finally Tells Him the Truth

Daniela has meanwhile left Jason behind and gone to see the man she considers her father. Their scenes initially feel like a return to something safe. They spend time together, drive at night like they did when Daniela was young and talk about the period when he first entered her life. The episode clarifies that he is Daniela’s stepfather. He met her when she was eight, after her biological father had already died, and eventually became the father figure she remembers. He also recognizes immediately that Daniela is carrying something painful. He tells her that problems from the past do not remain buried simply because someone refuses to confront them.

Daniela eventually begins painting again, which leads to the episode’s strangest revelation. Her father recognizes her brushstrokes because he knows his daughter extremely well. But he has also recently spoken to his Daniela, who is alive and living in San Francisco. For a moment, he thinks something may be medically wrong with him. Daniela finally tells him the truth: his daughter is in San Francisco, but another Daniela is also standing in front of him. She begins explaining the multiverse.

The episode does not show the entire conversation, but it marks an important change for Daniela. Instead of continuing to carry the impossible reality of the Box alone, she finally lets someone from outside the Dessen family know who she really is.

Jason Tells Charlie He Met Max

Jason and Charlie also get one of the episode’s most emotional scenes when they spend time together without Daniela. Charlie still carries the absence of Max, his twin brother who did not survive in their original reality. Jason finally tells Charlie something he has kept to himself: while traveling through the multiverse, he found a world where Max survived after receiving a heart transplant. Charlie immediately wants to know what his brother was like.

Jason describes Max as quick-witted, empathetic and occasionally difficult, before eventually reducing everything to the answer Charlie really needs: he was perfect. The moment gives Charlie something the multiverse rarely provides without a cost. He cannot have his brother back, but he can finally hear about the person Max might have become. Jason does not suggest opening another door and trying to find him again. That restraint is important. After everything the family has survived, Jason is finally capable of letting another world’s Max remain in that world.

Which Leighton Does Blair Meet at the Gala?

The biggest turn comes when Blair encounters Leighton Vance at the benefit. At first she assumes he may simply be the Leighton native to this reality. But their later conversation proves otherwise. Leighton remembers Blair. He tells her that after she disappeared into the Box, he adopted her cat Murphy because he could not bear the idea of the animal being sent to a shelter. He also apologizes for not conducting more testing before Blair entered the Box, while Blair reminds him that she was the one who insisted on going. This is therefore a Leighton connected to Blair’s original Box experiments, not merely an unrelated local counterpart who happens to share his face.

Their meeting is another example of the impossible convergence Blair and Jason were discussing earlier. In a multiverse containing endless realities, Jason, Daniela, Blair and now Leighton have somehow all been pulled into the same comparatively low-tech world. Whether that is true quantum “entanglement” between travelers remains unproven, but Episode 6 clearly wants viewers to start asking the question.

Leighton eventually convinces Blair to follow him and reveals that he has been living in this reality for almost two years. He previously operated in a more technologically advanced Chicago, but modern cities attracted too much attention from authorities. This world gave him a major advantage: its technology was sufficiently behind his own that relatively ordinary knowledge from another reality could make him extraordinarily powerful.

Leighton explains that he introduced the microprocessor and later the first home computer to this world. By accelerating its technological development decades ahead of schedule, he gained the money and resources required for something much larger. He calls it his new project.

Leighton takes Blair underground into Chicago freight tunnels originally constructed around 1900, abandoned in 1959 and later sealed. He specifically chose the tunnels because he believes versions of the same infrastructure should exist in roughly the same location across many realities accessible through the Box. That detail may be the key to understanding what he is building.

Leighton is no longer treating the Box as a machine one person enters in search of a better life. He appears to be creating infrastructure designed around repeatable, organized movement between worlds.

The subtitles deliberately stop short of naming everything Blair sees at the end. Leighton guides her deep into the restored tunnel network, she finally sees the scale of his project and responds with a stunned “What the fuck?” before the episode cuts away.

Apple’s season description provides the larger context: Blair is determined to stop Leighton while he pursues his “grand vision of creating a perfect world.” That makes the ending more ominous than a simple secret laboratory reveal.

Leighton has imported technology from more advanced realities before. He has used the Box to bring help into struggling worlds, and his stated goals have sometimes been genuinely humanitarian. But Episode 6 shows what happens when that idea scales up. By using one reality’s future knowledge to dominate another reality’s technological development, he can accumulate almost unlimited resources.

The abandoned tunnels also solve a logistical problem. Unlike a building whose existence changes dramatically between realities, century-old underground infrastructure gives Leighton a repeatable geographic anchor. If similar tunnels exist across many Chicagos, he can potentially build corresponding operations around Box access in multiple worlds.

The exact purpose of what Blair sees is intentionally held back for the next episode. Episode 7 is titled The Pyramid, and Apple’s synopsis confirms that Blair will confront Leighton while Amanda and Ryan encounter another threat. Episode 6 therefore ends by shifting the season’s biggest danger away from a single Box. Leighton is trying to turn access to the multiverse into a system.
