Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 5, titled Love and Be Loved, takes an unexpected detour from Jason1, Daniela, Amanda and Ryan to tell the story of another Jason who lost his chance to live with Daniela and Charlie. Instead of turning that loss into another fight over who deserves the Dessen family, this Jason makes a very different choice: he leaves their world completely.

What follows is one of Dark Matter’s quietest multiverse stories. Episode 5 does not follow the Jason whose marriage with Daniela reached a breaking point in Episode 4. Instead, it opens with another Jason variant preparing to leave the world where Daniela and Charlie are living.

The other Jasons do not try to stop him. They tell him that leaving may be his only chance of having a normal life, and the departing Jason tells another version of himself to keep Daniela and Charlie safe.

That opening is important because this Jason reacts differently from some of the more desperate variants created during the original journey through the Box. He accepts that Daniela and Charlie have chosen another Jason. Rather than treating their memories together as proof that he is entitled to take them back, he walks away.

Jason Finds His Mother Alive in Another World

Jason travels alone through the Box until he reaches a reality that gives him something he never expected to find again: his mother.

There is an immediate complication. In this universe, Jason’s mother remembers her son dying when he was only 16 years old. Seeing the adult Jason standing in front of her is therefore impossible from her perspective, and she initially struggles to understand whether he is really her son.

For Jason, however, the world offers the opposite miracle. He lost his mother in the life he remembers, while she lost Jason in hers. Each is essentially being given back someone the other universe took away.

The episode does not spend much time trying to explain the multiverse scientifically to Jason’s mother. The emotional truth matters more. She chooses to accept the adult man in front of her, while Jason finally has a home where his presence is not threatening somebody else’s marriage or family.

Dark Matter Episode 5 Ending Explained: Does Jason Stay With Maria?

Yes, everything in the ending indicates that Jason has chosen this universe and a future with Maria rather than returning to the Box.

The final scenes reveal that Jason and Maria have moved in together. Maria is preparing a celebratory cake for their first night sharing the home, while Jason heads out to pick up something she needs.

While he is out, Jason describes Maria as his girlfriend and tells another customer that they have just moved in together. When choosing flowers for her, he is advised to take roses instead, another small ordinary moment that would have been almost unimaginable for the broken man who entered this world years earlier.

Jason ultimately returns home to Maria, and the episode ends with their intimacy rather than with another Box opening. There is no last-minute revelation that he has been secretly planning to reclaim Daniela or find another Charlie. That absence is the point.

What Does Love and Be Loved Really Mean?

Episode 5 shows another possible answer to the central problem Dark Matter created at the end of Season 1. All of the Jason variants remember loving Daniela and Charlie. They can therefore convince themselves that those memories give them a right to that family. Some respond to losing them with anger, obsession or an inability to let go. This Jason chooses something harder.

He accepts that the life he remembers is no longer available to him. He allows another Jason to protect Daniela and Charlie, finds someone else who has also suffered an impossible loss, rebuilds himself through his relationship with his mother and eventually risks loving another person.

That makes Love and Be Loved a thematic companion to Jason1’s current crisis. Episode 4 ended with Daniela needing distance from Jason1. Episode 5 shows what one Jason can become when he stops treating the multiverse as a way to recover the exact life he believes he deserves. For once, the Box does not give Jason a replacement family. It gives him enough time to learn how to build another life.
